Just as the race to become Santa Barbara County’s next district attorney heated up over the past few days, campaign disclosure statements became public that show Senior Deputy District Attorney Joyce Dudley raised about $29,000 more than her opponent during the filing period that began last July and ended on Dec. 31.
Dudley’s opponent, and colleague, Chief Trial Deputy Joshua Lynn, raised $49,249 to Dudley’s $75,350. Part of the disparity is likely linked to the relatively short time Lynn’s campaign was seeking donations: he said his campaign didn’t get off the ground until the end of September or early October, while Dudley’s campaign had been up and running in some form or another since at least June.
According to the disclosure statements, Dudley spent $20,550 through the end of the year and had $54,800 remaining in the bank. Meanwhile, Lynn spent $11,270 and had $38,247 remaining in his war chest.
Both candidates said they were comfortable with their financial footholds, but none more so than Lynn, who said he hadn’t heard of his opponent’s numbers until being told of them by a reporter. The news led him to say he was surprised Dudley hadn’t raised more.
“I am surprised to hear that my opponent hasn’t raised more money given that she has been campaigning privately for, as I understand, over a year,” Lynn said. He added later. “I just couldn’t be happier with the way things are going and the support we’re getting from the public.”
On Tuesday, the board of supervisors, in a sort of act of inaction, allowed former District Attorney Christie Stanley’s job title to fall to the next person in line, Chief Assistant District Attorney Ann Bramsen.
When Stanley, who battled lung cancer through much of her tenure and retired last Friday, took an indefinite leave of absence last October, she named Lynn acting district attorney.
When Bramsen became the default interim district attorney, Lynn resumed his old position as chief trial deputy. While Lynn had said prior to Tuesday’s meeting that he hoped the board would leave him as the acting district attorney at least until the primary election in June, he said relinquishing the responsibilities of being that role will free him focus more vigorously on campaigning and fundraising.
“We’re just getting started,” he said. “Money certainly isn’t going to be an issue for us in this campaign.”
Dudley’s list of contributions is far larger than Lynn’s. She received about 155 monetary contributions, while Lynn garnered 51 donations.
However, what Lynn lacked in sheer bodies was made up slightly by a single $18,000 donation from his brother, Brent Lynn. This donation was $10,000 more than any single person gave to Dudley’s campaign.
In all, Lynn raked in eight other contributions of $1,000 or more, while Dudley amassed 35 individual donations of $1,000 or more, though some arrived on various dates from the same person.
For instance, her largest contributor so far is Gerald Franklin, a former prosecutor who recently retired after several decades in the District Attorney’s Office. The documents show that Franklin gave Dudley $8,000 in total, with multiple contributions of $1,000 or more.
Dudley’s other top contributors include: Peter Jordano ($3,253), CEO of Jordano’s, a food and beverage distribution company; Lynda Marino ($1,325), who is listed on the disclosure statement as an investor who lives in Montecito; Josiah Jenkins ($1,300), owner of Jedlicka’s, a western apparel and saddle store; and Ron Zonen ($1,250), a senior prosecutor who works in the same unit as Dudley.
Other large contributors who are backing Lynn include: Barbara Fromm ($5,000), who lives in Sebastopol, Calif., and is listed as retired; Richard Lynn ($5,000), who is listed as retired with a Santa Barbara address, and Stuart Gildred ($1720), a Buellton man who noted that he is a goat farmer and is also involved in real estate.
Both candidates have taken out loans: $5,000 for Dudley and two — one for $500 and another for $3,000 — for Lynn.
Dudley said she’s comfortable with the financial picture and noted that she feels her supporters are sprinkled over a wide-range of the political spectrum.
“I am extremely proud of two things,” she said. “First is the number of people who have donated to my campaign and the second is that my donors are both Republicans and Democrats. That’s very important to me.”

I wonder how much money Dudley put in from the sale of her book that got her kicked off a case?

Dudley, the Ruth of the DA's Office : 2/4/2010
Years ago I read that the notoriously churlish Ty Cobb, who suffered little guy syndrome in a big way, said of Ruth, "If he was half the hitter he should 'a been, he would'a hit more home runs!!!" It seems Lynn's hypothesis is , "I know she is ahead a me, but if she's so popular, she should'a been further ahead." Strike One, Lynn.

To the other SV : 2/4/2010
Whoever is saying that I am using their initials needs to comrehend that other people have the initials SV. Sorry I didn't get the memo that if my initials are also SV that I can not comment on this website because "THe real SV" doesn't like it. Verry myopic view of the world.

impostor of SV : 2/4/2010
You absolutely know that I, "SV", have been a recent and prolific poster on this news board over the last week. You have read the posts and understand the positions taken by "SV" This is evident because when you were called out yesterday about using the same initials you responded with some wise crack about "Oh really? You're the only one with the initials SV? Or was it because the other post wasn't filled with Joyce dribble?" So everyone knows you have been reading these posts and are a partisan in this issue. You then changed your signature to "vs". You are not a genuine poster if you intentionally use the same initials to attempt to confuse the community. You need to come up with your own identifying moniker and stop attempting your juvenile tactics of misleading readers. And yes, we all know that it is possible you have the same initials but we all know the real reason you choose to use them here on this board. Also, you reveal yourself as a fraud because yesterday you used lower case "sv" to try to deceive people and today you used upper case like I normally do (I am sure you recognized your error and therefore changed it). Any self respecting person would not want their opinions confused with others, so you are an obvious intentional impostor. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DECEIVE PEOPLE ANY MORE!

Ty Cobb : 2/4/2010
I liked your comments comparing josh lynn to ty cobb. That made me laugh. I have not seen that quote but it is so true. I really don't know either candidate but that comparison was spot on to what he said in the paper.

Obviously made the mistake on hiring Greenwell's on MIlpas PR Person, the blowback from his attempt at dirty politics left him sullied instead of his opponent. Its a tie for PR mistake of the New Year marijuana dispensary or the former acting DA perhaps he should consider a ticket with Jmike next.

Unlike Ty Cobb....you are so far off base you're out. SV could be using his own initials..I have no idea who that is. I was just foolin with you yesterday and used vs and mentioned the Joyce dribble. Sorry...you're wrong accusing SV of this. And if you at all think you're not partisan...you're wrong again. You've been on here since day one spewing JD stuff. Who cares. If you think comments on her mean anything your wrong again. Just part of the political BS. And if you had pair...put your own name down. And no...I don't chose to...it's more fun this way. You libs...are all the same.

One thing Josh Lynn has in common with Ty Cobb is that he is willing to do anything to win, including taking cheapshots at his oponents both in court and now in politics...

I just read the squabble between the two SV's. At first I though neither had a brain. Nor could they spell. Then I looked at how they constructed their sentences. Twins? Nope. I think SV is an unmarried psychotic, bio-polar, MPD. (Multiple Personality Disorder victim.) Too bad. Keep an eye out for his next "alter" personalities. These folks are very interesting -- all of them. Look out for their, or his, next "alter" se

DAs Race : 2/18/2010
Josh Lynn doesn't have a prayer of becoming the next DA, and the money race is already demonstrating that fact. Ms. Dudley raised half again as moch funding as did Lynn in the first report period, she seems to have a lot of heavy hitter endorsements from all over the county not to mention the political spectrum, and has not resorted to dirty politics the way Lynn did a few weeks ago. Almost every political campaign book around will tell you that whichever candidate stoops to those low tactics first is feeling desperate, and rarely do they go on to win the race. Lynn has a bunch of amateurs running his campaign as evidenced by the unsuccessful "dirty" campaign he waged to keep his position as "Acting DA". It didn't work -- but is that the harbinger of what his term as the DA would be like if elected? Heaven forbid!
I recently heard that on the Jesse Hollywood trial, and many of Lynn's other big case trials, he had to have a full staff of junior deputy DAs and paralegals helping him on the cases, doing all of the day-to-day work to put the case together and to prepare for trial each day -- so he could go into court the next day and play super-star prosecutor, when he really wasn't anything close to that. Hmmmm, let's see -- 13 years in the DAs office -- equat8ing to 12 - 15 big cases -- that's not much experience, is it? Yet, Dudley has handled hundreds of cases and a multitude of big case trials.
Lynn keeps criticizing Dudley's record. Perhpas he should go look in the mirror. Maybe sometime soon someone in the DAs office will expose what I am told is his own rather jaded record.

Judge Roy Bean : 2/19/2010
Who are you? Certainly not a local judge. And what gives you the credentials for criticizing how a D.A. manages a high profile case? And how do you know that the way Mr. Lynn prepares for trial is anything different than how Ms. Dudley prepares for trial? Let's keep it real for a change.
