Signs of construction will begin springing up near the Highway 101 overcrossing at Winchester Canyon as crews begin preparing to build new bridges to replace older structures that have been deemed structurally deficient.
In addition to replacing the older overcrossing bridges, city officials took the opportunity to shift the alignment of the crossing to Cathedral Oaks Road, which is expected to improve circulation and safety. The current bridges will remain open until construction on the new structures is complete.
Workers will start preparing the site in the next few weeks by topping and removing several trees in the area, triggering some temporary lane closures along Hollister Avenue, Calle Real and Cathedral Oaks Road. Residents are urged to use caution while driving in the construction zone.
The $6.7 million contract for the project, which came in nearly $1 million below the engineer’s estimate, has been awarded to Shasta Constructors, Inc., a Redding, Calif., firm.
Funding for the project is being provided by federal and state grants, in addition to transportation improvement funds from the city of Goleta.
Why not a local contractor? : 2/6/2010
Why are these projects not being done by Granite or some other local contractor. So the money stays local and the jobs stay local. It is great that this project is happening. Just wish the project was awarded to a local firm.
