Firefighters and police to raise funds for Haiti relief

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Feb. 4, 2010

Local firefighters and police officers are joining forces this Saturday to raise funds to benefit victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Public safety officials will be on hand during the donation event at Earl Warren Showgrounds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds will be split evenly between two local groups — Hands4Others and Youth for DRI.

Direct Relief International has responded to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti with medical supplies and medication, in addition to developing plans for long-term needs such as prosthetic limbs.

Hands4Others is a student-led group that is providing water purification systems to the earthquake-ravaged nation. The water systems will remain as part of the rebuilding process, serving as permanent infrastructure for areas without access to clean water.
