Residents in the St. Francis Hospital neighborhood are being invited to a meeting tomorrow evening with Cottage Health System officials to discuss upcoming construction to convert the former hospital site into workforce housing.
Hospital officials will discuss final plans for the site — including demolition of the hospital buildings and construction of 115 townhomes — and introduce neighbors to the project team.
The project is going through a final checklist with city officials, and is expected to receive demolition and construction permits in the next few months. Demolition will be preceded by construction of a sound wall around the perimeter of the site, along with landscaping work.
“There are plans to have another neighborhood meeting approximately three weeks prior to the actual demolition of the former campus buildings, which is expected to be in early spring, and later in the year, another meeting will be in advance of the construction phase,” according to a news release from Cottage Health System.
In the works since 2003, the project will provide 81 affordable homes for employees of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Officials hope the housing will help attract and retain high-quality medical professionals.
The community meeting takes place at 5:30 p.m. in Burtness Auditorium at Cottage Hospital, 320 Pueblo St. Parking is available in a new parking structure at Pueblo and Castillo streets.
School Funding? : 2/4/2010
SB school district is going basic aid, meaning all school revenue will come from local property taxes. With the Cottage Hospital housing being designated as affordable housing the property tax rates will be greatly reduced.
Is Cottage is going fully cover the cost of the children from this project attending the public K-12 schools?.

Affordable for how long? : 2/4/2010
I don't think there are any deed restrictions that will limit the sale of the condos to a certain price or to resale to just Cottage employees.
In a relatively short amount of years, this could be all just market rate housing........
It is too bad that Cottage is not limiting them to remain as Cottage employee housing in the long run since that was the main stated goal of the project (to provide workforce housing for Cottage employees...)
This is Going to be Crazy for Residents and Businesses : 2/7/2010
I just rented space in the medical arts building at 601 E. Arrellaga St. I had no idea this was going to be taking place. I'm happy that there will be affordable housing but I am concerned about how it will affect businesses in the area. http://www.ultimatepotentialcenter.com
