Police blotter — February 9

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Feb. 9, 2010

Feb. 4, 11 a.m. — An officer spoke with employees at Yogurtland, 621 State St., about a theft the night before. A review of surveillance footage showed a man placing a full cup of yogurt in his pocket before leaving the store without paying. The officer noted the man was wearing a dark sweatshirt with light strips and tan, baggy pants.

An hour after taking the theft report, the officer was contacted by an employee at the store, who reported seeing the suspect walking along State Street. The officer caught up to the 30-year-old suspect and confirmed he was wearing the same clothing seen on security footage.

The suspect said he was drunk the night before and did not remember what he did. A records check revealed the 30-year-old had prior thefts with jail time served. Authorities booked him for petty theft with priors. Bail was set at $20,000.

Feb. 4, 4 p.m. — Officers patrolling along North Salsipuedes Street spotted a man on a bike riding on the sidewalk. After the suspect failed to stop at an intersection, police attempted to pull him over.

The man looked at officers and continued cycling before turning into an apartment complex in the 800 block of N. Salsipuedes Street. As the man started running, police gave chase and noticed him reaching into his left pocket.

Officers caught up to the 52-year-old suspect as he began climbing a set of stairs in the complex and tackled him to the ground. Authorities found a rock of cocaine nearby and another rock in the suspect’s left pocket.

The suspect told police he biked to Ortega Park and purchased the cocaine. He said he ran from officers because he had been drinking, which was prohibited by his probation terms. Authorities booked the 52-year-old without bail for possession of a controlled substance, destroying or concealing evidence, resisting arrest and violating his probation.

Feb. 4, 8:22 p.m. — Officers responded for the second time that day to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Ladera Street after receiving reports of a woman yelling in the street. The apartment manager told police he contacted one of his tenants in the driveway.

The 45-year-old woman was screaming obscenities at everyone. When the manager attempted to calm her down, the suspect spat at him, hitting him in the chest. Authorities booked the woman for battery. Bail was set at $2,500.

Feb. 4, 9:31 p.m. — Reports of a man causing a disturbance brought police to Palmieri’s Cocktail Lounge, 1431 San Andres St. Further investigation revealed a bartender had noticed a man attempting to enter the establishment and informed him that he was not welcome.

The suspect, a 36-year-old man, had been drinking in front of the bar and throwing beer bottles. Upon being turned away from the door, the man reportedly said, “Go f— yourself. Go f—ing bartend.”

He lifted a skateboard as if he was going to hit the bartender, but eventually left after a passerby yelled at him. Police caught up to the suspect in the 1500 block of San Andres Street and booked him for brandishing a weapon. Bail was set at $2,500.

Feb. 5, 2:45 a.m. — A 911 call from a woman who reported being choked by her boyfriend brought police to a home in the 2700 block of Miradero Lane. The victim answered the door with tears in her eyes and told police she returned home from a trip to the movies with friends to find her boyfriend passed out drunk and naked on the floor.

When she woke the 30-year-old suspect, asking him to put on clothes and go to bed, the couple began to argue and the suspect became angry. The victim said he grabbed her and pushed her head into the floor.

She showed officers how an earring had been pulled from her ear as the 30-year-old pushed her into the carpet. The victim also suffered scratches on her arms and a carpet burn on her shoulder.

As the victim realized her boyfriend was going to be arrested, however, she began recanting her story. The suspect remained uncooperative and intoxicated, yelling at the victim not to say anything. Authorities booked the 30-year-old for domestic violence. Bail was set at $25,000.

Feb. 5, 4 p.m. — Officers headed to an apartment in the 600 block of Garden Street in search of a 38-year-old woman for a probation check. Police found the subject in the parking area and conducted a search of her purse and vehicle.

The search turned up numerous pills in a metal container in the suspect’s purse. A search of her residence turned up more prescription pills in a cupboard, along with a syringe loaded with heroin in a dresser.

The prescription drugs included morphine, methadone, Vicodin and Ambien, and officers could not turn up any prescriptions in the suspect’s name. The woman told police she used heroin the night before because she was running low on oxycodone.

Authorities booked the 38-year-old without bail on multiple counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of syringes and probation violations.

Feb. 5, 10:49 p.m. — Reports of a disturbance brought police to a home in the 200 block of N. Cota Street, where officers learned the homeowner has a restraining owner against her son. The suspect, a 42-year-old walked into the unlocked home and refused to leave, telling the victim, “I’m going to f— you up.”

The man fled before police arrived, but returned several hours later and again refused to leave. Officers arrived and took the man into custody for violating a restraining order. Bail was set at $20,000.

Feb. 6, 4 a.m. — A woman called police after a strange encounter with a housemate at her residence in the 600 block of Eucalyptus Ave. She had been sleeping in her bed when she woke to someone touching her buttocks.

When the victim saw her housemate in bed with her, she screamed. The 20-year-old suspect jumped out of bed and made a vague reference to a clogged sink. Police determined the suspect was intoxicated and took him into custody for battery. Bail was set at $2,500.

Feb. 6, 6 p.m. — While tracking down a subject on probation in the 600 block of Garden Street, police ran into a 22-year-old woman on parole for narcotics possession. After allowing the woman to leave, officers discovered marijuana and 2.6 grams of hash, or concentrated cannabis.

Authorities went to the suspect’s home in the 700 block of Ashley Road the following day to question her about the narcotics and conduct a parole search. Police found 5.6 grams of marijuana in the woman’s house, as well as a small amount in her pocket.

The 22-year-old said she smokes marijuana daily instead of using prescription drugs, and said she was unaware that hash is illegal. Police booked her without bail for possession of concentrated cannabis and violating her parole.

Stealing food shouldn't be a crime? : 2/9/2010

Oh, please! There are plenty of places a transient can get free food locally without stealing it. This is such typical casa de la raza rhetoric--you "rich" peopke have too much and the thieves have nothing. I have three words: get a job. And stop trying to justify stealing.

: 2/9/2010

while you may think stealing food shouldn't be a crime, carmen, it is, and people should be punished for it. why don't you stick to feeding the hungry rather than feeding people with your b.s. rhetoric? the fact that you have to write your b.s. in spanish too speaks volumes as well.

Bail : 2/9/2010

Crawling into someones bed=$2500 Brandishing a weapon=$2500 Battery=$2500... A cup of yogurt=$20,000...Um?

me.

What did you expect? : 2/9/2010

What did you expect? This is what happens during this wheels-falling-off-riding-on-the-rims economy.
Get ready for more. It will only get worse.

: 2/9/2010

This woman represents Casa de la Raza??? Would her board of directors call her up and tell her to stop publicly embarrassing the organization, or are they behind her? If they're behind her, I think the organization is a bunch of nuts.

: 2/9/2010

The yogurt guy got his jail and bail because he's been arrested on prior thefts.

: 2/9/2010

"He said he ran from officers because he had been drinking, which was prohibited by his probation terms."
But apparently carrying rock cocaine is A-OK!

: 2/9/2010

how is that apparent? Its apparent that he got arrested for it, so evidently, its not OK.

compassion?!? here on the police blotter comments page? impossible. : 2/9/2010

props to the compassionate woman from the Casa De La Raza, she's willing to give her email with an open invitation to feed the hungry. All you people who do nothing but spew racism and heartless right wing critism of a society that you all had a part in creating could learn something from her. Dont listen to these hypocritical tools Carmen! Keep being awesome!

Crack : 2/9/2010

"how is that apparent? Its apparent that he got arrested for it, so evidently, its not OK."
I thought it was funny that he said he ran from the cops because he'd been drinking, not because of the crack in his pocket.

Great job Carmen! : 2/9/2010

I'm a lonely white racist republican pig, anti-immigrants, anti-homeless, anti-health care reform, anti-social, anti-everything, and I spread my hate behind a monitor, I'm a proud American and I know my rights, and I have the right to hide!!!

WHITE POWDER!!!

: 2/9/2010

Upppsss I meant WHITE POWER!!! I'm into some good stuff when I spread hate online... I'm a ONLINE HATER!

Anti-all of you

Only in the Police Blotter comments... : 2/9/2010

So now saying "Don't steal" is racist?

Yes? : 2/9/2010

Build more prisons, create massive unsustainable debt, wage wars.
Didn't the former Soviet Union do just these things?
This is exactly more of the same Wheels-fallen-off-running-on-rims mentality that will ultimately be our undoing.

: 2/9/2010

They've sent us a message that they can take whatever they want. But we will send them a message that this is our land!

: 2/9/2010

"The 20-year-old suspect jumped out of bed and made a vague reference to a clogged sink."
Just here checking out your plumbing, ma'am! Looks like I'm going to need to snake your pipe...

Marijuana is not a narcotic : 2/9/2010

Marajuana and hashish are products of marajuana. Narcotics come from the poppy plant and releave pain, relieves coughing and promote sleep. They are not the same thing as marajuana. So when you speak of drugs, remember there is a huge difference between marajuana and narcotics.

To wowo man: : 2/9/2010

doubt your actually a man, probably some kid with nothing better to do but come on this site and hate. "i swear, the censor for the sound Must be mexican!" Your an idiot also because unless you know for a fact he or she is from mexico you dont say mexican. its latino but dont worry they will teach you that in school

Steve

Good for you : 2/9/2010

Carmen. I hear poor people on the scanner all the time stealing food it's pretty sad. I give when I can too.

R.D.

But there's always money for booze... : 2/9/2010

"The suspect said he was drunk the night before and did not remember what he did." -- Hey buddy, maybe if you'd pass on buying the Colt 45 you wouldn't have to *steal* the yogurt.

Missing the point : 2/9/2010

R.D., providing food to the needy is one thing... but justifying theft is quite another. Carmen is doing the latter. Yogurt Guy hardly seems part of the deserving-but-desperate poor anyway.

Yogurt : 2/10/2010

Is alive, so is the crime technically a form of 'napping? Like, dog-napping, or kidnapping?
Anyways, thats some detective work right there. Tax dollars going to work. Case closed. The yogurtnapper is nabbed. And Carmen, you should direct all the broke and hungry you know to Ralph's self checkout lines. Its just that easy! And considering grocery stores through out TONS of food NIGHTLY, and self checkout was created to cut back jobs...You're actually doing good by exploiting the entire process to steal food!

Triumvinate

hey wowo man : 2/10/2010

I get it, but compassion and kindness are still way more awesome traits in a human being than being a hater. You should think about why you get on this comments page and start hating. You are probably pissed off about something, and I bet it goes deeper than this dude who stole some yogurt from a yogurt place.

Prat

^^^^^ : 2/10/2010

Uh huh : 2/10/2010

We're obviously "entitled" to keep enduring hypocritical race-baiting here, that's for sure.

Latino? : 2/11/2010

Tell me where is latin America.Mexicans are not latin. The word Latin is used but not understood.Casa de la Raza means The house of the race.Race doesn't matter to crime.People are good and bad.If you steal you are bad, not misunderstood.

Regarding Feb. 4, 8:22 p.m. entry : 2/12/2010

I was the one calling about this woman. She was not only screaming obscenities at everyone, she was obviously in need of mental health services. She admitted to being "tri-polar" and definately fit the bill. On the Saturday morning prior she was doing it at 5:00am. How much does it take for someone to get their mental health issues addressed? Working in the mental health field I'm well aware of the problem, but this was an example of a glaring problem ending in arrest. The police were absolutely awesome on how they handled a situation that could very easily gotten out of hand. They displayed team work that looked almost choreographed in their deportment. Hats off to them and I hope the woman gets the help she needs.
