A guest house perched high in the Montecito foothills caught fire yesterday, causing an estimated $125,000 in damage to the 500 square-foot structure.
The home, an older wooden structure, was located about 20 feet down a steep slope from the main house’s back patio.
A person living in the structure called 911 after smelling smoke, an official with the Montecito Fire Protection District said. The home is located in the 2300 block of Bella Vista Rd.
Emergency crews responded to the fire at 10:02 a.m., and had the blaze put out about 20 minutes later.
A firefighter sustained an ankle injury while battling the blaze. In all, more than eight vehicles, four of which were engines, responded to the fire.
High winds howled through the foothills when the fire broke out, but according to Curtis Vincent, a Montecito Fire spokesman, there was never a concern that the blaze would morph into a wildfire.
“Everything’s so green,” he said.
The fire’s cause was under investigation.

Looks like a shack, which is mostly what I see when I look at "guest houses" for rent. Most of them don't even have kitchens! Gotta love Santa Barbara. Housing is so tight people can rent out whatever.
