At the top of the ticket on Nov. 3 is the high-stakes mayor’s race to replace Marty Blum, but an intriguing subplot is developing in the race for Santa Barbara City Council.
The recent endorsements made by the Santa Barbara Democratic Party in the city council race are rippling through political circles, not for the three council candidates the board backed – but because of two longtime activists that members overlooked.
The party board is set to meet tonight and issues surrounding the endorsement process may surface during the meeting.
At the center of the storm are David Pritchett and Cathie McCammon – two longtime community activists who where snubbed or passed over by the party when the board made its endorsements last month. Pritchett, who sits on the Central Committee, has publicly cried foul over the endorsement process, and accuses the chair of the committee, Daraka Larimore-Hall, of boxing him out.
“He’s the one who orchestrated the vote against me, so I was competing against the party chair, not the other candidates,” Pritchett told the Daily Sound.
In the days since the endorsements were announced, Pritchett says there’s been pressure — both overt and implied — from people he wouldn’t identify, that the race would be a lot simpler without him in it.
“Plenty of people have admitted that this would be an easier decision if there were fewer Democrats in the race,” Pritchett said. “People have insinuated to me that I should not compete in the same way with Democrats in the race that I would with non-Democrats in the race.”
The flare-up is an indication of the tension and emotion that is fueling the council race. With nearly a dozen people running for three open seats on the council, political relationships are splintering and friendships are being challenged. The endorsements also raise questions about the power of the party’s backing and to what degree official party support matters in a nonpartisan contest.
Larimore-Hall, a longtime party activist, calls Pritchett a friend, but also accuses him of simply being bitter over not getting the endorsement.
“People want our endorsement and when they don’t get it they belittle the endorsement,” Larimore-Hall said. Larimore-Hall said he, nor anyone from the party leadership, is suggesting that Pritchett should step aside in favor of the board’s backed candidates, Grant House, Dianne Channing and Olivia Uribe.
“That’s really not how we roll,” Larimore-Hall said. “He has every right to run. It’s a nonpartisan race.”
Pritchett has been particularly vocal about the endorsement of Uribe, a 24-year-old candidate who just moved into Santa Barbara a few months ago after a failed attempt to get on the Goleta Planning Commission.
Larimore-Hall said the candidates who were endorsed all bring necessary values and experience to the race.
While Pritchett and others who were not endorsed by the party are suggesting that they can win without the group’s support, overcoming party backing may be a tough uphill fight. The party typically knocks on doors, makes telephone calls and funds mailers to people’s homes. Partisan voters are likely to simply go with the Democratic party’s picks if they don’t have a strong feeling or identification with any of the candidates.
The Pritchett dust-up isn’t the only problem causing the party leadership heartburn these days. The board did not offer an endorsement interview to McCammon. The party claimed that it didn’t know McCammon was in the race.
McCammon, a slow-growth activist who has been heavily involved with the League of Women Voters and the Citzens Planning Association over the years, is well known in political circles and many observers have a difficult time believing that the party leadership didn’t know she was going to run for council.
After it had made its endorsements, the board offered McCammon an opportunity be interviewed. Larimore Hall said two weeks ago that the board would be willing to reconsider endorsements.
But McCammon a few days ago formally declined the party’s offer.
“It’s too little, too late,” McCammon said.
McCammon said in her circles the party’s endorsements “are not even on their radar,” because it’s a nonpartisan race.
Larimore-Hall said he would just like see all the of candidates be adults and campaign on their own issues, without launching attacks on the official party.
He said overlooking McCammon’s candidacy was an honest oversight.
“I just hope that she understands there was nothing intentional about how it transpired,” he said.
He said the board would not be reconsidering their endorsements at this point.
“The party made their decisions,” he said. “There was strong support from the board for the people that were endorsed.”

Prtchett, Uribe, what's the difference? They both are special interest SBCANdidates who want to use your money to build affordable housing to house illegal aliens next door to you. They want "economic justice" which means if you work for a living you are a criminal who deserves to be punished, and everybody who doesn't work deserves a cut of your paycheck. It just isn't fair that you pay your bills without paying for everybody else's first.

Pritchett, McCammon on the outside : 7/2/2009
The reporter says these two candidates are at the center of the storm. I'm not sure if there's really a storm. People are just amazed that the party endorsed two inferior candidates rather than Pritchett who has been on many boards and commissions and has dared to take on the News-Press, and McCammon who has served on the water board or the Harbor Commission and been active on slow-growth policies. Uribe and Channing are not on any city boards or commissions. To most voters, that is important experience. Didn't Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton teach us not to play the gender or race game?
Still proud Democrat in San Roque
What a Mess : 7/2/2009
I feel bad for the candidates I support who got the endorsement (like Dianne Channing). I disagree with proud Democrat in San Roque. Dianne Channing successffuly chaired dozens of meetings of the Neighbrhood Preservetion Ordinance Committeee.
: 7/2/2009
Call it a Board, Commission or a Committee it's still better than Uribe's failed attempt to get on Goleta's Planning Commission. Maybe those Goleta Council Members didn't want the scandle of appointing someone with a criminal record?

Don't you get it yet? : 7/2/2009
Like Democrats everywhere, they are choosing candidates based on the color of their skin, not the content of their character. Somehow they think this will bring all those of like color to the Democrat party. How insulting to those of like color, to assume that they are so simple minded that color is all they base their vote on. It's called race exploitation. Uribe is being used, but she is under the impression that she is the best qualified. How could they possibly choose a white male? It is simply not P.C.
Voting for Pritchett : 7/2/2009
He stood up to the News Press and Wendy McCaw.

I KNOW WHO I AM ENDORSING : 7/2/2009
Although endorsements matter, I think the people will decide this election. I have faith Santa Barbara will vote for the candidate with the best ability to balance the budget because he has experience working with numbers in the millions. They will vote for someone who is not concerned about endorsements or being used as a political ploy to infiltrate the council. They will vote for someone, because he has the strongest stance on all the issues and a paper trail to back up what he says. I AM VOTING FOR THE REALEST, MOST DOWN TO EARTH CANDIDATE NOT ON THEIR HIGH HORSE WITH A RADICAL AGENDA+++++++++++++++WWW.VOTETEVIS.COM+++++++++++++++++++++I like the idea of bringing back old school Santa Barbara.

Voting for Pritchett? : 7/2/2009
Oh now there is a qualification - he stood up to the big evil News Press and scary Wendy McCaw - so did a whole lot of other people with a chip on their shoulder - so what? That really helps Santa Barbara .
: 7/2/2009
Don't worry about slow growth - the destruction of the economy by Democrat policies has already taken care of that. Growth has been put in reverse already.
: 7/2/2009
Who cares who the Democrats endorse...people will vote for who they want anyway. A Democratic endorsement seems like a curse to me. I will be sure not to vote for whoever they choose.
Poor Pritchett :( : 7/2/2009
He's obviously been poorly, ill adviced. Whoever told him that badmouthing his party will make him win ANY election, is not thinking about his political survival. I've been around politics and politicians all my life, and one of the main characteristics that I've seen in successful politicias is discipline and loyalty, no matter what. Where would Hillary be if she would have behaved as Pritchett and McCammon are behaving? Certainly not where she is now. These candidates are only thinking about the present race, like there's no future for them. Frankly after all the comments they've made, that could be very true. The party knows why they give their support to one candidate over another (whether we understand their resons or not), and as much as people want to disqualify those decisions based on race or any other simplistic reason, the truth is that capability and political ability are at the center of their attention. I'm rather new to SB, but politics is politics everywhere. Candidates are not aloud to make certain kind of mistakes. If they do, they take the risk of loosing any chance they might have in the future.
I'm just sayin'
Bedrolls for Bonzo : 7/2/2009
I know about Santa Barbara politics and this news article is correct about what people are saying in private with their reluctance to embrace all of the endorsed or nonendorsed candidates out of their concern about not appearing to be a party loyalist. However I wonder what the point of writing this may be except for the author Josh Molina to fill his weekly quota of political articles. Daraka wants everyone to think this is just about bitter and sour grapes for a story that will not die. The interest persists because it is about his choice of an endorsement for an unqualified candidate who plays the race card, does not even live in Santa Barbara and who still is on probation for drunk driving. Those are the stubborn facts that are not going away. That's not an attack on the party but rather the sad reality that Daraka has brought upon it. Daraka made his bedroll and now he has to sleep in it.
How the rest of us roll
: 7/2/2009
don't people know the endorsement is decided by a democratic (little d) vote, not by an anointing? all candidates needed 60% for endorsement, and the three who got above that threshhold were endorsed. pritchett knows that as well as anyone, especially since he had a vote.
learn the process
: 7/2/2009
How pathetic. I'm giving my contributions directly to the candidates until this party gets its act together.
Inside info : 7/2/2009
I heard it was down to Pritchett or Uribe during the vote. Finally, the group was persuaded that a brown female was better than a white male. So people should decide for themselves if they want to vote for a candidate based on color, gender, experience, the building heights initiative, service on non-profit boards, social activism, criminal records or endorsements. Yes, democracy with the small d.
Lane Anderson is the Dennis Kucinich in this race
Sore loser : 7/2/2009
I like pritchett and was thinking of voting for him. Darakas tactics have ruined local politics for years. But I am disappointed to see David making personal attacks on other candidates. Unnecessary and not a good demonstration of how he would take the high road or not if elected.
Disillusioned
awesome is as awesome does : 7/2/2009
This will be the first time the Santa Barbara City Council race is a consolation prize for not getting appointed to the Goleta Planning Board!! Uribe does live in Santa Barbara: since March, she has rented from Mickey/Dick Flacks. As Olivia tweeted:: "The Santa Barbara Dems party chair, Daraka is pretty awesome." @10:11 PM Jun 27th from TwitterFon This lifelong Democrat is not impressed. As for the Dem. Central Committee, I wonder how one belongs. Looking at their web site, I see that David Pritchett is not only a member but the chair of the communications subcommittee. What a slap in the face to choose Uribe, with no Santa Barbara city experience, over him. Indeed, he should be angry. As for overlooking McCammon's candidacy, "an honest oversight", that's laughable. She announced back in May her intentions to run.

Not being "intentional" makes it ok??? : 7/2/2009
Gee Daraka, that's the favorite excuse of so many wrong-doers---"gee I didn't mean to__________". Could you have been a bit more clever in your obfuscation? You are a joke. Yea I also saw Olivia's "twitter" gushing over how awesome you are. ewww.
where have all the grownups gone?
Really? : 7/2/2009
I invite anyone to sit in on a Democratic Central Committee meeting....you will quickly learn it's not the cabal folks are making it out to be. You'll also learn the Daraka isn't the little Napoleon people describe him as--he'd have better luck potty training cats than vote whipping the Central Committee. Three candidates got over 60% of the members' votes--the others were not even close. Finally if anyone could present 1 logical theory of why Cathy McCammon was left out of the initial process, perhaps I'd listen, but an honest oversight sounds like the only logical explanation. And she didn't get the Democratic Women's endorsement and was included in their entire process--so I doubt she would have landed the DCC's blessing.
What attacks? : 7/2/2009
What evidence is here that any candidate has made personal attacks against any other candidate? What evidence is here or anywhere that any candidate is angry? Just saying it and entering comments does not make it true.

Who is bitter and doing negative attacks now? : 7/2/2009
To quote from the first article on June 16, " 'We're all adults, and people will get over it,' Larimore-Hall said."
The Low Road
Committee Of Outsiders : 7/2/2009
That committee has always been made-up of alot people from Santa Maria, Lompoc and Isla Vista. They do not know or understand Santa Barbara City elections. That is why they think someone like Miss Uribe would do well here. Our City is facing serious budgetary issues. Miss Uribe is hardly the best qualified candidate to handle these problems.

Egad. I guess I'll have to think for myself...
SB News-Press issue is important : 7/3/2009
I'm a Republican and care very little about the Democrat's endorsements. However, standing up to Wendy McCaw and Travis Armstrong is important to me. My wife was threatened by McCaw's attorneys. Other businesses were forced to take down signs supporting the reporters. It got ugly and our city is still hurting from the News-Press becoming a hobby of an unstable wealthy owner. David has my vote because he has the courage to criticize the newspaper and the people running it. He's a candidate for political office and he won't play nice with them. That takes guts.
