A woman was killed Saturday afternoon after falling from the hood of a moving vehicle, and the driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence in connection to her death, authorities said.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was riding on the hood of the car as it traveled westbound on Sycamore Canyon Road. As the car neared the 1400 block, the 41-year-old victim fell, suffering a serious head injury, police said.
Witnesses told police the woman initially appeared to be OK, saying she sat on a curb with the driver, Dennis Wayne Gibbons. But at some point, the woman fell backwards and stopped breathing, a police department spokesman said.
Authorities said the duo had been partying for 24 hours prior to the accident, smoking crack and drinking alcohol.
On the day of the accident, Gibbons and the woman drove to a nearby area and parked for a short time. But when it came time to leave, police said the woman, for an unknown reason, remained on the hood of the vehicle.
When authorities arrived on scene, the order of events was unclear. One thing was immediately apparent, however: Gibbons appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.
Police found a small amount of crack cocaine, marijuana, and a prescription drug inside Gibbons’ vehicle.
He was booked into county jail on felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony drug charges.
