100 barrels of crude oil spills at BreitBurn facility

By DAILY SOUND STAFF

Nearly 100 barrels of crude oil gushed from a storage tank Sunday morning at a BreitBurn Energy facility at 1555 Orcutt Hill Road, Santa Barbara County fire officials said.

The spill, which totaled roughly 4,200 gallons, was traced to a tank that had been kept under excess pressure. Fire Capt. Vince Agapito said the leak developed over time and was detected by BreitBurn employees around 5 a.m. When the extent of the leak became known, the employees called the fire department.

The spilled oil was corralled by a dirt berm, and cleanup reportedly took only a few hours, officials said.
