Delta Airlines is canceling its flights from the Santa Barbara Airport to Salt Lake City. Delta notified the city today. The two-daily flights will cease on Sept. 12, according to Santa Barbara city officials.
Delta began the non-stop Salt Lake City service on 50-seat regional jets in 2001.
The loss of the flights comes after SkyWest Airlines in June discontinued its five daily flights to San Jose, leaving businesses that rely on brisk service to that city wondering where to turn.
Salt Lake City is a major hub for Delta.
Santa Barbara is currently in the middle of a $50 million expansion of its airport terminal in an attempt to modernize and improve passenger convenience.
Ouch : 7/28/2010
That means Delta is out for any local flights...too bad it was really convenient to have the option to fly Delta.
And it was awesome if you wanted to go skiing in Park City. Leave at 6am and you're on the mountain by noon.

SB is NOT LAX : 7/28/2010
I'm so glad they are building the huge terminal at the airport with the 3 million dollar loading ramps, we really need that now..........Maybe I can park my Cessna in if if they need the rent.
airlione cuts : 7/28/2010
So, Delta is cutting flights, Sky West is cutting flights, United is a bygone glory. Do ya think maybe the $50 mil expansion project money might be better spent elsewhere?

Stimulus projects : 7/28/2010
Interesting how the stimulus money gets spent to keep gov't workers employed, pensions and all and to build gov't projects we do not need.
Shameful!

Airport Expansion : 7/28/2010
Seems that the airport here cannot sustain too many carriers at any one time. First ExpressJet came and went, then, Alligiant, now Delta, USAIR to Las Vegas, United to San Jose, and Horizon to Sacramento. United airlines to Denver, LAX and SFO are the only flights that have been consistent, and yet the city seems to keep trying to sabotage them by bringing in carriers lilke ExpressJet and Frontier who directly compete with United. Pretty sad that the city of Santa Barbara and the Airport Commission feel that an expansion in the middle of a recession was necessary. How about just upgrading the airport and using the money for something else, like paying the bums to leave State St. forever.

What about Jobs : 7/28/2010
Anyone have a clue as to the number of people that will be losing their jobs because of this? Does the airport have another airline lined up? Wonder what the financial hit will be for the city with all of these airlines leaving. Can't be good.

Sum Peepl... : 7/28/2010
...just have no clue about how airport financing works, as if it can be transferred at will to any other city need. And as if the city government should have control over the market decisions by the airline corporations.

Its working : 7/29/2010
We kept Target out, now the airlines are leaving. You want easy flight, move to LA and fly out of LAX. I wish they would close the airport, cut down on the noise.
Keep LA 100 miles away
Bummer : 7/31/2010
Now we all have to fly SBA to LAX to Vancouver to Calgary to Cranbrook if we want to ski at Fernie. Used to be SBA to SLC to Cranbrook. Easy. Now, I'll just have to drive to June Mountain.

jobs at SBA airport : 8/2/2010
One poster asked how many jobs will be effected, at SkyWest who operates and ground handles, the Delta and United flights, staff will be be cut by about eight or so full time positions, and many others will have to take a part-time position or be furloughed this is after a round of furloughs a few months ago because of the loss of the SJC flt. Delta's reason for discontinuing the flight is that it was not profitable, but this flight was consistently full so something is wrong when a business can't make a profit on a full flight.

This was my connection city! :( : 8/21/2010
Salt Lake City is a major Delta hub with connections to all the major cities in the US. This was my main connection point for business travel. It was easy one stop connection to anywhere.
We are spending $50 million on EXPANDING an airport that seems to be loosing the most important services. Trying to run or even be part of a business in this city stinks. Loosing DL and its SLC hub connection power is bad news for business travelers. I bet its the airports fault for increasing costs in the future with the new construction
