Supes spare 4-H Clubs

By COLBY FRAZIER — July 28, 2010

Seventeen 4-H Clubs throughout the county were given a reprieve yesterday when the Board of Supervisors conceptually approved an additional $68,300 in funding for the program.

In addition to the 4-H clubs, the funding ensured that a number of programs provided through the University of California Cooperative Extension office, including research in agriculture, natural resources, nutrition and consumer sciences, will go on.

The UC has long received a chunk of county funds to provide the programs. But due to steep cuts to the UC system, school officials told the board yesterday that additional funding from the county was necessary for the programs to continue. The county had already agreed to give the program about $112,000. With the addition of the new funds, the county’s contribution this fiscal year to the program will total $180,000.

While the possibly of losing the county’s 4-H Clubs raised the most eyebrows, proponents of the cooperative extension program noted that the funds help provide a number of other resources. Chief among them are workshops for farmers on crop production and water quality management and conservation.

A master gardener program and food stamp nutrition education program are also offered.

The board will resume the discussion on Aug. 10 to work out a couple of kinks in the agreement.

"Just Say No" to the freeloader UC Regent : 7/28/2010

Supervisor Joni Grey already denied 4H the $68,000 last month because "it's, "just a lot of money" - and after extensive, personal research in the program, she aimed this recommendation of denial to the Board of Supervisors.
The UC System, however, can't seem to be innovative enough to generate funding for their programs independently without further taxing the local County General Fund???
People thought the UC system was instituted to provide economic vitality for California, or, in other words, educate people how to make money, not merely garner from other people's taxes.
Already, the UC system benefits disproportionate amount of support from the State of California (which imposed involuntary loans against City and County treasuries). The UC is also known to be sly in burdoning city treasuries via Redevelopment Agencies in other parts of the State territory to meet their own, exclusive interests - not available to the public as a whole.
Domestic health programs, like for the poor, are not getting sufficient attention in realms of medical access, rental assistance - or meeting excessive criteria for vehicle license, registration, and insurance demands imposed by the State of California - hindering the public capacity to be more productive revenue generating members of society.
The Supervisors have ethical and common sense duty not to pay the UCs any more money.
Talk about a "nanny state" for adults over there. If they can't figure out how to generate their own revenue, how do they expect their graduates to?

Supes fund 4-H : 7/31/2010

leave it to a "university graduate" to hold forth without a shred of facts! Cooperative extension is like the 11th UC and it has matched funds for these programs for years. SB county funds to the lowest percentage of California's 58 Counties yet has for years had one of the most vibrant 4-H and ag based programs resulting predominantly from great volunteers.. This was a debate about leveraging county dollars for necessary programs. They're not paying the state, they're paying for the programs, get real. As has become typical with the BOS this easy slam dunk decision was made difficult by the fact that none of the supes read their briefing book before the meetings. This should have been done long ago so that they could focus on the pension/benefits nightmare that will put the County into bankruptcy. Why pay staff to prepare agenda packets and briefing books they don't read? For now they are content to fiddle while Rome burns.
