Authorities on hunt for 'Bike Bandit'

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — July 29, 2010

Authorities are on the hunt for a motorcycle helmet-wearing bank robber who has been given the nickname “Bike Bandit.”

The man entered a Santa Barbara Bank & Trust at 1483 East Valley Road Tuesday, pointed a gun at a pair of tellers, and fled on a purple BMX bicycle.

Authorities said the man escaped with an unknown amount of cash, which was accompanied by a red dye pack, which police believe might have exploded.

A similar robbery unfolded on July 13 in Vandenberg Village, though authorities have yet to say if they suspects are the same. During that incident, the suspect also wore a helmet and fled on a bike.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the robbery to contact detectives at 681-4150. Anonymous tips can be left by calling 681-4171.

Anyone who comes across money or discarded clothing is urged to contact investigators.
