Police identify woman who died after falling off moving vehicle

By COLBY FRAZIER — July 29, 2010

The woman who died Saturday after falling from the hood of a moving vehicle was identified as Isabel Tole Renosa, 41, of Santa Barbara, authorities said yesterday.

Additional details about the accident were also released, and indicate that the woman was riding on the hood of the car voluntarily.

According to Lt. Paul McCaffrey, a Santa Barbara Police spokesman, Renosa rode on the hood of the vehicle, driven by 53-year-old Dennis Wayne Gibbons, as it traveled along Sycamore Canyon Road.

At one point, McCaffrey said Gibbons, also of Santa Barbara, slowed to a near stop and commented to a passerby about Renosa being a “hood ornament.”

A short time later, Renosa fell from the hood of the vehicle and suffered a fatal head injury. Gibbons stopped to help his friend, and dialed 911.

Traffic investigators believe Gibbons was traveling at an unsafe speed. Authorities also believe he was also under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the accident.

Both Renosa and Gibbons were known drug users and police said the duo had been drinking and using drugs prior to the incident.

Small amounts of crack cocaine, marijuana and other drugs were found inside the vehicle.

Gibbons was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI causing death, drug possession, allowing a passenger to ride in an unsafe manner and speeding.

He was being held in county jail on $100,000 bond. A toxicology report for Renosa is pending.

She MAY have been riding on the hood "voluntarily" but he sure as hell should not have been driving with her on it!!

For all how want to make jokes about someones death, just remember that you will to have a day that you'll have to answer so please stop. I never called her mom because she didn't raise me but now that she is dead I wish I would have gave her the time. Now I have two kids of my own that she will never meet. I wish she would have stayed in the womens home and cleaned up. I never stopped thinking of her in hope that she would understnd that the way she was living wasn't the best. I wish I had time to talk to you. I was told to give you a chance because if anything ever happened to you that I would feel bad and at the time I didn't think I would feel anything tords you and now that the time has come and your no longer with us on earth I feel horrable. I'm sorry I wish this time never came. There was so much I wanted to know and so much I wanted to ask. But none of that matters any more. So now that your eyes are closed go in peace with God where your mind and soul diserves to be. God Bless you! RIP mother.

Mija,
No matter what words you & your mommy exchange she understoodl. She always knew she hurt you & your sibilings and so many times we would find her crying for all of you. she always accepted your feelings & understood that you all deserved so much more then what she was able to do. . And she NEVER once held that agaist you.She knew that your life happiness & your sibilings happiness was the most amazing gift she could have known even at a distance. She was so proud of you when she found out you were a new mommy. She loved all of her children even if her ways didn't show. Don't let your the hard feelings consume you. That is not what your mom would have wanted. She will forever be etched in our hearts. Forever.....
