Police blotter — August 11

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — August 11, 2009

August 6, 5:40 p.m. — An officer on patrol in an unmarked squad car spotted a wanted suspect leaving a liquor store in the 300 block of N. Milpas Street. Authorities stopped the 22-year-old man as he got into the passenger seat of a nearby car.

After a records check confirmed the suspect was wanted for probation violations, police told the man to exit the car. He shoved his way past several officers and started to run away.

Officers hit the suspect with Taser darts in his lower back, dropping him to the ground. Nonetheless, the 22-year-old continued to struggle as police placed him in handcuffs. Once in custody, he told officers he was on the run from a drug rehabilitation institute in Los Angeles.

During a search, authorities discovered a glass pipe with dark residue in his possession. The 22-year-old was booked without bail for resisting arrest, possession of paraphernalia and violating probation.

August 6, 6:40 p.m. — Police spotted a vehicle entering a lot in the 100 block of E. Cota Street and noticed one of the passengers did not have a properly fastened seatbelt. Officers contacted the driver, a 24-year-old who admitted he didn’t have a valid license, and his five passengers, all between the ages of 12 and 14.

Police noticed several 40-ounce beers in plain sight and discovered a purse, which nobody in the vehicle claimed, that contained a small amount of marijuana. Officers also found an aluminum baseball bat under the driver’s seat.

Several of the juveniles in the vehicle admitted to drinking alcohol. Authorities took the 24-year-old into custody for driving without a valid license and contributing to the delinquency of minors.

August 7, 12:55 a.m. — Responding to reports of a disturbance at a home in the 400 block of Donze Avenue, officers were confronted by an uncooperative and vocal 48-year-old woman. She refused to identify herself or explain why neighbors had called police to report slamming doors and screaming.

The woman stood up several times against police commands and was restrained. However, she managed to slip one hand from her handcuffs and lunged at an officer, biting him on the shoulder. Authorities took her into custody on $2,500 bail for resisting arrest and battery on a peace officer.

August 7, 2:30 a.m. — Officers on patrol near Ortega and State streets spotted a group of approximately 10 subjects arguing on the sidewalk. Upon closer examination, police noticed one woman had a gash on her forehead.

Further investigation revealed the incident had started as an argument between two men when one woman, a 19-year-old, went after one of the men with her high-heel shoe. The victim stepped in and took the heel to the head.

Although there was some disagreement among witnesses as to whom the 19-year-old had planned to attack, the fact that she had planned to attack anyone at all gave officers the authority to book her on $2,500 bail for battery.

August 7, 10 p.m. — Several law enforcement officers, including a handful from outside agencies, patrolled along the 500 block of State Street during Fiesta when a man approached. The curious 26-year-old asked them how “cops” felt about having cascarones, or confetti-filled eggs, cracked on their heads.

The officers told him it would not be appropriate. When asked what would happen to someone who committed such an act, police said the person could be arrested for battery.

Despite the warnings, the 26-year-old raised his hand over the head of an Oxnard Police Department detective and squeezed it, causing a flurry of confetti to fall upon the detective’s hair. Authorities promptly issued the man a citation for battery on peace officer.

August 8, 1:36 a.m. — Officers on Fiesta foot patrol in the first block of W. Ortega Street noticed a man urinating behind a car and yelled at him to stop. The 27-year-old man immediately ran to the vehicle and climbed into the backseat.

The suspect attempted to slam the door, but officers stopped him and ordered him to leave the car. The clearly intoxicated man refused to exit and continued to struggle as police pulled him back onto the sidewalk.

As officers attempted to arrest the 27-year-old, a woman stepped out of the car and moved toward the scuffle. Despite being pushed away and warned repeatedly, the 24-year-old continued to obstruct officers. Another man, a 23-year-old, also stepped in the way of officers and refused to move.

Authorities called in backup and wound up taking the 27-year-old into custody on $2,500 bail for resisting arrest, public intoxication and urinating in public. The other two suspects also earned a trip to jail for delaying or obstructing peace officers.

August 8, 5:40 a.m. — Officers were called to the 600 block of Santa Barbara Street following an injury traffic collision possibly involving a drunken driver. Police conducted a DUI investigation and eventually arrested a 25-year-old man for driving under the influence of drugs.

Inside his vehicle, officers discovered a medley of prescription medications and drugs, including Vicodin, Adderall, Darvocet, Xanax, Valium and marijuana. The suspect told police he took some of them for pain and said he occasionally receives pills from friends.

Authorities noted the 25-year-old had been driving while significantly impaired and booked him on $100,000 bail for DUI causing injury, and transportation and possession of controlled substances.

August 8, 8:15 p.m. — After spotting a young man placing beer into a vehicle, police approached and detained all five underage individuals in the car. A quick search of the vehicle, however, revealed a more serious offense: a bindle of cocaine under the passenger seat.

Two men, both 18 years old, stepped forward to take responsibility for the drugs. They admitted to snorting cocaine earlier and said they had purchased the drugs for $40. Messages on one of their phones had details about the drug sale.

Authorities booked the 18-year-olds on $10,000 bail for possession of cocaine and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

August 8, 10:21 p.m. — While on bike patrol during Fiesta festivities, officers spotted a sobbing woman seated on a staircase near Anacapa and De la Guerra streets. A man was attempting to console her, but she kept pushing him away.

Concerned about a possible domestic disturbance, police approached and asked the woman why she was crying. The 27-year-old Oxnard resident told officers she was upset because they couldn’t find their car, which they had parked in an unknown lot in the city.

After a few minutes of discussion, an officer asked to examine the woman’s purse and she agreed. Police discovered a black folding knife in the purse and determined it was “gravity assisted,” meaning it could be opened with a flick of the wrist.

After the 27-year-old admitted the weapon was hers, officers issued her a citation for possession of an illegal weapon and booked the knife into evidence.

August 9, 7:20 p.m. — Witnesses called police to report an assault taking place in the 300 block of Castillo Street. En route, officers learned the suspect was kicking the victim and taking items from his pockets.

Upon arrival, one officer spotted the 52-year-old suspect kicking a motionless man on the ground in front of a liquor store. The suspect spotted police and started walking away, but was quickly detained.

The 52-year-old promptly told officers, “We are lovers, he owed me money.” Witnesses said the two men had been arguing when the suspect threw the victim to the ground and began kicking before reaching down and taking money from the victim's pockets.

Police found $3.28 in the suspect’s hand. Upon further questioning, the 52-year-old said he became upset over the debt owed to him by the victim, particularly when the victim refused to buy him cigarettes.

Authorities booked the suspect into jail in lieu of $100,000 bail for armed robbery.

August 9, 10:30 p.m. — Police raced to La Mesa Park after witnesses reported spotting a man choking a woman. Officers found the 54-year-old suspect holding the victim in a headlock in the park.

The man appeared heavily intoxicated and was bleeding from a wound on his head. Bystanders confirmed the man had been choking the woman as she screamed. Authorities took the suspect into custody on $2,500 bail for battery, public intoxication and several outstanding warrants for public intoxication-related violations.

Our Town : 8/11/2009

Did anyone notice these stories are about gang members & homeless alcoholics ? santa barbara is going down the freakin' toilet quick. And the local government won't do a thing about it. They don't know what to do because they can't see the problem's from their mansions. I guess they don't interact with the common folk busting their asses to live here, hoping for a safe community from their galas & photo op's. This is the greediest community I have ever encountered. Santa barbara is a big dissapointment & all those running it. YOU ALL SUCK!!!

I'm having trouble figuring out why the police asked to search the sobbing woman's bag. Where's the probable cause? And I think the word you're looking for, Local Steve, is "You're and idiot," not "your an idiot".

Closure : 8/11/2009

I believe I have the answer to the whole "You're/Your" discussion. The correct statement is "Yore an idiot". No need to thank me

Cascarones : 8/11/2009

Battery? For having confetti sprinkled over your head? That's a bit ridiculous. Oh no, a "flurry of confetti" in the victim's hair. Lighten up.

you guys think sb sucks? thats because it's all outsiders running it. Put real locals into the city council that actually grew up here. What really pisses me off is these rich people moving here and jacking prices up and bumping the locals to Lompoc and Santa Maria and Ventura. I own a house in SB that I grew up in. I have to rent it to rich people to pay my mortgage in Lompoc. Oh yeah, and the richies hire the illegials to do all their lowlife labor work and pay them way too much so they too may live the life of luxury in sb. Ever go to the grocery store and notice who's in front of you? Gold teeth. Thats who. Ever try to get a table at Oak Park at easter? Or any other park for that matter. It aint white folk there first. Yeah sb does suck but Lompoc sucks more.

How is it that a person urinating in public is such a horrible crime, when we allow dogs everywhere drenching every bush, curb, hub cap, etc.?
