Free skin cancer screenings offered

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Sept. 2, 2009

Correction: The free screenings will take place today from 1 to 7 p.m. at La Cumbre Plaza, 3815 State St., near William Sonoma and Sears.

Local dermatologists and organizers with the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour will offer free skin cancer screenings and information to local residents today as the tour rolls through Santa Barbara.

Screenings and skin cancer information will be provided via the tour’s 38-foot customized recreational vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis. Local dermatologists Dr. Kimberly Hurvitz and Dr. Keith Llewellyn are donating their time and expertise.

Although the most common form of cancer in the country, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable and curable if detected early. The goal of the tour is to raise awareness and educate the public about skin cancer prevention. The event takes place at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, 524 W. Pueblo Street, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Hundreds turned away : 9/2/2009

Thank you Drs. Llewellyn and Hurvitz for donating your time. You surely saved some lives today. I arrived for a screening after work around 5pm and was told that the demand for screening was so great that by noon people were turned away. This seems like a very basic preventative health measure and the fact that it is not readily available and easily accessible to everyone shows just how broken our health care system is. So now I will make an appointment wilh my primary care physician, take off work to visit my doctor, pay the copayment, ask her for a referral to a dermatologist, make an appointment with the dermatologist, take off work, pay the copayment, and hopefully find out that this Irish skin has escaped major damage from years of living the the California sun. Sure seems like there should be a better way.
