Colin Firth to be feted at SB Film Fest

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Oct. 28, 2009

Actor Colin Firth will be feted with the Outstanding Performance of the Year Award during the silver anniversary of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival early next year.

Well-known for his roles in romantic comedy and drama films, Firth is being honored for his portrayal of a British college professor in “A Single Man.” The film, set in Los Angeles in 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis, documents his character’s struggle with the death of his longtime partner.

“Colin Firth grabs on to the best role of his career in ‘A Single Man,’ forcing us to have another look at his incredible list of films up to this point,” Roger Durling, executive director of the film fest, said in a prepared statement. “He’s one of the most enduring performers working in cinema today, and we’re so thrilled that we’re honoring this most deserving actor at the peak of his game.”

Since his international breakout role in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” Firth has gone on to star in several Academy Award-winning films, including “The English Patient” and “Shakespeare in Love,” as well as the popular flicks “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Bridget Jones and the Edge of Reason.”

Previous award winners for Outstanding Performance of the Year include Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet and Charlize Theron.

The award ceremony will take place on Feb. 13, 2010, and tickets are available now at a 20 percent discount until November 14. More information is available by calling 962-8543 or visiting www.sbfilmfestival.org. The festival runs from February 4 to 14.

I have not seen "Single Man" but hardly a star Colin Fiirth has been known for his lack lustre and forgettable performances, mainly consisting of long pregnant silences and meaningful stares.

.. and for his wonderful stage performances in Another Country, the Caretaker, etc and his subtle and mesmerising film roles in Another Country, Tumbledown, A month in the Country, Apartment Zero (Oscar worthy surely) , Valmont, When did you last see your Father, Genova, Trauma, Where the truth lies etc etc. Shame you missed them!

An actor who needs no dialogue .. his eyes say it all ... especially in The Secret Laughter of Women ... my favorite.

I have seen almost all of Colin Firth's work on the wide screen, television or DVD and I say that the recognition he is receiving now is long overdue. He absolutely deserves it. Lily

Well deserved for Colin Firth, I was just watching Nanny McPhee, he was brilliant, and I admire him to make an oustanding career, and not all the good comes from Hollywood, that sometimes offers us trash, He is an extraordinary actor, handsome and talented. I suggest Rene to watch independent films more often to understand his career. Maybe the Star at the Hall of Fame that he will receive next year is given to " forgettable and lack lustre actors"????!!!!
