With a recent boost to its supply of H1N1 influenza vaccine, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is planning a series of flu shot clinics throughout the county for those in high-risk groups.
Pregnant women, children younger than 4, parents of infants and those with substantial medical conditions are among the populations that are most at risk of serious complications from the flu strain, health officials said.
The health department received 5,500 multi-dose vaccines, 3,800 nasal spray doses and 700 pediatric doses and will dole them out during five upcoming community clinics.
“The amount is still not sufficient to vaccinate all the members of the high-risk groups,” according to a statement from county health officials.
While there is no charge for the vaccine, health department officials noted they reserve the right to determine which type of vaccine will be offered to each individual. Clinic attendees also have the right to accept or decline the vaccine.
Vaccination clinics are being held at Earl Warren Showgrounds on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.; at the Santa Maria Public Health Clinic on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; at the Lompoc Public Health Clinic on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; at the Santa Ynez Valley Veteran’s Hall on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m.; and at the Carpinteria Veteran’s Hall on November 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“The [public health department] cannot assure that there will be a sufficient supply of vaccine to immunize all individuals who come to the immunization clinics,” according to the statement. “As we receive more vaccine, additional vaccination clinics will be scheduled.”
