As the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County continues its month-long Turkey Drive in advance of Thanksgiving, the Isla Vista Food Co-op is joining the effort by offering a two-for-one deal of sorts on organic and free-range turkeys.
For every turkey purchased at the co-op by November 20, the organization with donate a turkey to the foodbank. The co-op’s general manager, David Montano, is also purchasing $2,000 worth of organic food for the foodbank to distribute, including stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, chicken broth and beans.
“Seeing our similar roles as stewards of distributing wholesome food to our community, I believe the foodbank’s partnership with the co-op was inevitable,” Erik Talkin, executive director of the foodbank, said in a news release.
The foodbank distributed 3 million pounds of fresh produce last year, including 1 million pounds of produce from local farmers. The organization also launched a “Feed the Future” initiative featuring programs that focus on children’s health and nutrition education.
The foodbank will send a refrigerated truck to the co-op on November 20 to pick up the donated Thanksgiving food. Organizers continue to ask for donations of turkeys, non-perishable food items and monetary contributions.
Turkeys and other food items can be dropped off at the foodbank’s warehouse, 4554 Hollister Ave., through November 20 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Those interested in purchasing a turkey from the co-op can reserve a bird by calling 968-1401.
I reserved my tukey with the Co-op : 11/11/2009
I always wanted to get an organic, free-range turkey for Thanksgiving, as I've been told they are much tastier and juicier, this promotion made me finally get it done--I reserved mine at the Co-op over the weekend. So great that they are donating so much to those most in need.
