Nov. 4, 5 p.m. — While conducting a parole search at a home in the 1800 block of Chapala Street, police spotted a Dell laptop in plain view in the living room. When officers powered up the computer, they noted the two log-in names did not match the parolee.
Suspecting the laptop was stolen, authorities logged in and found a document with a woman’s name. After running the name through police records, officers learned the woman had been the victim of a residential burglary, during which a Dell laptop was stolen.
Authorities booked the 26-year-old parolee without bail for violating his parole and possession of stolen property.
Nov. 5, 11 p.m. — An officer spotted a man on his bicycle without a light near the intersection of Nopal and Quinientos streets and stopped him. The 33-year-old said he didn’t have any identification but agreed to a search of his belongings.
Police discovered a Santa Barbara Bank and Trust debit card in the suspect’s wallet in a woman’s name. Further investigation revealed the card had been stolen two days earlier during a strong-arm robbery. Authorities booked the 33-year-old for possession of stolen property and an outstanding warrant. Bail was set at $5,000.
Nov. 6, 3:12 p.m. — Reports of an intoxicated man bothering his mother brought police to a home on Cliff Drive. The mother, who had called authorities, said her son had fled before police arrived.
Officers found the 52-year-old suspect in the 1200 block of Cliff Drive and quickly noted he was unable to stand without assistance, had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his speech. During a search, police found two yellow pills in the suspect’s coin pocket.
The suspect spontaneously said the pills were Vicodin and belonged to his mother, who has a spinal injury and uses them for pain. Authorities confirmed that the pills were Vicodin and booked the 52-year-old for possession of a controlled substance and public intoxication. Bail was set at $10,000.
Nov. 6, 4 p.m. — Police responded to a minor-injury traffic accident near the intersection of Anapamu and Anacapa streets. A 38-year-old man had been traveling westbound in a pickup truck when he crashed into the back of another vehicle.
The suspect placed partial blame on an unsecured Chihuahua dog riding on his lap, but officers placed the bulk of the blame on the 38-year-old for driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities booked the suspect for DUI.
Nov. 6, 11:20 p.m. — While talking with a pedestrian in a city parking lot in the first block of E. Ortega Street, an officer spotted a passing driver who did not have his seatbelt secured.
The 55-year-old man was unresponsive and appeared dazed when told to fasten his seatbelt. Further investigation revealed the man had been driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance.
The 55-year-old was also booked on a warrant out of San Jose for speeding, driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance.
Nov. 6, 11:40 p.m. — While on patrol, an officer noticed the vehicle in front of him had no monthly registration tag and pulled it over in the 1600 block of Villa Avenue. The driver, a 39-year-old man, had no license and was taken into custody.
Authorities brought in a police dog to search the vehicle, and the canine alerted at the driver’s floorboard area and the center console. Police found a bindle containing 6.5 grams of crack cocaine near the floorboard, along with a smaller bindle with less than a gram of cocaine near the center console.
Authorities booked the 39-year-old suspect for driving without a license, possession of cocaine and transportation of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $10,000.
Nov. 7, 2:30 p.m. — Called to a home in the 2900 block of De la Vina Street on reports of an assault, officers stepped onto the sidewalk and spotted a woman approaching the apartment in question. The 44-year-old suspect kicked the door and demanded entry.
Police noted the woman appeared to be heavily intoxicated and had a bottle of vodka. When contacted by officers, she initially said the man in the apartment had beat her up, then promptly changed her story to say that nothing had happened.
Authorities spoke with the victim, who said the woman had attacked him with a knife, cutting both of his arms. He said they lived together and had been dating for eight months.
Police found the knife on the floor near the doorway and booked the 44-year-old woman for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence causing injuries. Bail was set at $50,000.
Nov. 7, 7:41 p.m. — Officers spoke with a woman who had entered the police station on Figueroa Street and reported that her boyfriend had threatened to kill her. The couple had been dating on and off since April, but the 30-year-old suspect had been acting differently in recent weeks.
While arguing at a fast food restaurant in Goleta, the suspect reportedly said, “If you ever lie to me or hurt me, I will kill you.” Asked if he was serious, the 30-year-old said he wouldn’t shoot the victim, but would “slice” her up.
As the victim spoke with authorities at the station, she received numerous calls and messages from the suspect, including one message in which he said, “I’m going to kill you, homie.”
UC Santa Barbara police tracked down the suspect at a residence in the 6500 block of Del Playa Drive. Authorities booked him for making criminal threats and set bail at $50,000.
Nov. 8, 7:19 a.m. — Witnesses called police after spotting a woman passed out in a car in the 100 block of S. Voluntario Street. The 39-year-old woman had been in the vehicle for more than an hour and had not moved.
Officers found the vehicle parked with its lights on, engine running and doors locked. The woman continued dozing and was unresponsive to initial attempts by police to wake her up. Eventually, the suspect woke up and unlocked the doors.
She then noticed she had a metal narcotics pipe on her lap and quickly tried to hide it under her seat. Officers had already spotted the drug paraphernalia and took her into custody. A search turned up a bag with white powder in the suspect’s jacket pocket that tested positive for cocaine.
Authorities booked the 39-year-old for possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $10,000.
Nov. 9, 10:58 p.m. — Additional details emerged about a standoff with an armed and possibly suicidal man who fired a gun inside his apartment in the 200 block of W. Valerio Street.
In a police interview, the 49-year-old suspect reportedly told detectives he had been drinking for five days and was contemplating suicide. He retrieved a handgun and pulled the trigger to determine if it was operable. The gun fired a bullet, which passed through a wall and into a stairwell before lodging in a wooden door.
The suspect said he began having second thoughts after firing the gun. A friend arrived minutes later for an unexpected visit and spent the next few hours talking with him and trying to get him to calm down.
The 49-year-old eventually left the apartment, which had been surrounded by the SWAT team and other police personnel, and was taken into custody without incident. Police learned the suspect was familiar with guns and frequently visited the Winchester Canyon Gun Club.
Authorities seized additional ammunition and firearms from the apartment. After determining the 49-year-old had willingly fired the handgun, police booked him for grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.
