Pattaya opens in Goleta

By JOHN DICKSON

GOLETA’S APPETHAI restaurant has returned with a new name and a spacious new location. Pattaya Bar & Grill, which is also a music club and banquet hall, has opened at 5918 Hollister Avenue in Old Town Goleta. Pattaya is not just big – it’s huge.?   In addition to a full Thai restaurant, the east side of the building has a large bar & grill, lounge and music stage. Just the bar & grill side of Pattaya, which offers American food with Thai appetizers, is larger than 90% of all restaurants in Goleta. The bar & grill has 10 large screen TVs, a full circular bar (think “Cheers”) and offers beer, wine & fermented spirits. In the future they plan to offer nighttime live music several evenings a week.?   The west side of Pattaya includes a large banquet hall, available for rent. Pattaya currently has two groups of 200 people booked to use the banquet hall. The banquet hall has a separate chef and can create custom menus for you.?   Pattaya is open daily11 a.m. – 2 a.m. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and dinner runs from 5 p.m. – midnight. For more information call 964-2800 or visit pattayasb.com.

SILVERGREENS TO OPEN: Silvergreens Restaurant is opening a new location in downtown Santa Barbara, across from the Paseo Nuevo Mall, next Monday December 1st. The address is 791 Chapala Street which is next door to Esau’s Café. From breads, soups, dressings and hand-cut fries, to roasting their own meats and vegetables, the bulk of Silvergreens’ menu is made from scratch each day on site.?   This newest Silvergreens location is Santa Barbara’s first green certified restaurant, and features an innovative receipt technology, provided by Nutricate, that presents personalized nutritional information to each customer with each order. The system provides customers with information about their individual or customized order, including calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates and the percentage of recommended daily values. For more information about Silvergreens visit silvergreens.com.

BURGER PLACE UPDATE: Michelle Mastrangelo, owner of Epiphany Restaurant & Bar and Sesto Senso Ristorante, tells me that her new restaurant "Burger Place" should open next to Vons in Montecito during the first week of December.

BRICKS CLOSES: Bricks Cafe located at 509 State Street has closed their doors for good.

WHODIDILY: Sprinkled Pink Cupcake Couture at 1150 Coast Village Road in Montecito has changed their named to “Whodidily.” I am told that they held a fundraiser that raised lots of money for Tea Fire victims. Good job!

THANKSGIVING TO GO:  Need a take-home turkey dinner for Thanksgiving? Call Sly’s in Carpinteria (684-6666) or Pierre Lafond downtown (962-1455). Need just the trimmings? Call Call Fresco Cafe at Five Points shopping center (967-6037) or Fresco Cafe North in Goleta (692-8999). They are offering side dishes and some desserts for sale for Thanksgiving. And don’t forget to order homemade pumpkin ice cream from McConnell’s on Misstion Street (569-2323).

LAURA’S LOSS: I am sad to report that Laura Knight, owner of the popular downtown restaurant Pascucci, lost her home in the Tea Fire. Fortunately she had good insurance and will rebuild.?

ONE HOME, TWO FIRES: My friend John Wardlaw used to live at 595 Sycamore Vista Road, on a hillside above the intersection of Sycamore Canyon Road and Stanwood Drive in Montecito. His home received a lot of attention from people passing through the area because it was octagonal-shaped and very visible from the road.?   One day in 1977 a huge fire raged through the Sycamore Canyon area, destroying 200 homes. When a nearby house suddenly exploded into flames, his family quickly evacuated. Like everyone else, they were not allowed back in the neighborhood and wondered if their home was still standing.?    A day later the Wardlaws picked up a newspaper and found the final answer in an unusual and shocking way: There was a large picture of their home ablaze on the front page of the Los Angeles Times (see photo).?    I visited John’s burned-out home not long after and the sight of it in ruins is one of my few memories of the Sycamore Canyon Fire. The Wardlaws still had the original plans and rebuilt their home almost exactly the same. They lived in it for many years and I spent a lot of time there. Eventually the home was sold and they moved elsewhere in Santa Barbara.?   Last week I paid my first visit to the area devastated by the 2008 Tea Fire. I decided to stop by 595 Sycamore Vista Road to see if my friend's former home had survived. What I saw was exactly what I remember from that summer long-ago: an unusual tic-tac-toe-shaped foundation, ashes, rubble and a twisted metal garage door frame lying next to the driveway. My heart goes out to the current owners, who, as the Wardlaws did in 1977, likely lost everything.
