A week after permanently banning alcohol from beaches in Isla Vista, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors today will consider adding smoking to its list of prohibited activities at county beaches and parks.
According to an agenda letter prepared for the meeting, Santa Barbara County is among the last jurisdictions with beachfront property in Southern California to lack such a ban.
The agenda letter says a ban would help protect public safety by reducing second-hand smoke and greatly reduce litter. It says cigarette butts are the No. 1 source of litter found during coastal clean-ups.
“I believe that there should be a ban on smoking,” said 2nd District Supervisor Janet Wolf, who had the item placed on the Board’s agenda.
A ban is likely months away, and Wolf said she hopes support exists on the Board to authorize the Public Health Department to work with the county’s Park’s Commission to craft an ordinance.
The agenda letter says 151 municipalities in the state have adopted anti-smoking ordinances, and smoking is prohibited at more than 90 percent of beaches in Southern California. Wolf said she hopes the ordinance would also include inland parks in the county.
The Board of Supervisors meeting starts at 9 a.m. and is being held at the Betteravia Government Center in Santa Maria. It is broadcast live on channel 20 and is also shown at www.countyofsb.org.
Enforcement : 12/8/2009
Where will the money for enforcement come from? They can't even enforce dog leash laws at the parks, so it falls to the smoker to police himself. This begs the question of why should a smoker be more considerate than an arrogant dog owner?
I have seen off leash dogs cause more trouble at beaches and parks than any cigarette. Supes, please get your priorities straight.

About Time : 12/8/2009
Not only are cigarette butts made from cotton and so don't biodegrade when smokers throws them on the ground, but why should I be subject to somebody else's second hand smoke from their completely selfish and self serving indulgence of smoking. I think cigarettes should be banned period, but this is a great start.

dumb laws or laws because of the dumb? : 12/8/2009
I'm a smoker. I smoke at the beach and in the parks, but I never throw a butt on the ground. A trash can is never too far away. If this is the only way to keep people from throwing butts everywhere, fine. I'm disgusted to see butts all over the beach as much as a non-smoker. This is just another freedom lost because of dumb people.

What will you do when they come for you... : 12/8/2009
What are the politicians going to do when they run out of things to make illegal? It seems to be a national hysteria when it comes to smoking. I wonder if anyone really understands the statistics. Take a guess, what is the chance a smoker will die of lung cancer? 95%? 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%???
"This would place the lifetime odds of dying from smoking at 6 to 1 (45 million smokers divided by 100,000 deaths per year x 75 years), rather than 3 to 1. However, about half (45 percent) of all smoking-related deaths occur at age 75 or higher. These can be called “premature” only by stretching common usage of the word. The odds of a life-long smoker dying prematurely of a smoking-related disease, then, are about 12 to 1."
So my question is, what are the Supervisor's going to outlaw to address the other 11 of 12 chances that I'm at risk of dying from? Maybe they're just looking for something, anything for our overpaid L.E. agencies to keep busy and justify their bloated, bankruptcy inducing paychecks.

enforcement!! : 12/8/2009
I agree with the first letter writer: who is going to enforce this law? I am thoroughly opposed to laws that are not enforced......
