Santa Paws (and More!) is Coming to Town

By KAREN LEE STEVENS — Dec. 2, 2009

Christmas has come early to the Stevens household! After entering a drawing at the Arbonne Skin Care booth during The Inquisitive Canine’s Holiday Boutique in Ventura last weekend, I learned that my name was drawn as the grand prize winner. (Insert happy dance here!)??Independent Arbonne consultant, Jennifer Foster, called me with the good news and suggested I choose a product from the company’s Holiday '09 catalog. After much debate, (OK, it only took me about 30 seconds, because I really wanted the matching soap and hand lotion caddy!), I chose the Shea Butter Hand Care Duo.??But that wasn't all: When Jennifer personally delivered the gift to my home, she also brought along a goodie bag brimming with Arbonne’s very own hydrating facial wash, balancing toner, facial serum, corrective eye cream, and day and night creams. (After the week I’ve had—don’t ask!—I need all the help I can get.)??Ever the animal advocate, I wanted to know Arbonne’s policy on animal testing and was delighted to learn that the company not only doesn’t test any of its products on animals, but its ingredients are certified vegan and don’t contain any animal by products, parabens, or mineral oil. (They even use flax seed oil instead of fish oil.)??“Arbonne is a very green company,” says Jennifer, who is also a huge animal lover. “They strive to be natural and organic whenever possible, hence their motto: Pure, Safe, and Beneficial.”??Arbonne’s RE9 anti-aging product line (a top seller), contains vitamins A, C, E and antioxidants—“all the good stuff you need without any chemical dyes or fragrances,” says Jennifer. And because the products are sold through independent consultants rather than through retail outlets (where products often remain in warehouses or on store shelves for months or even years), the company can use far fewer preservatives (less than 1/2 of 1%).

If you'd like to pamper yourself or a loved one this holiday season, please contact Jennifer at (805) 565-8522 or jennifer@fosterplanning.com. She’d be more than happy to sit down with you to discuss your skin care needs. As an added bonus, you get to do all your holiday shopping from the comfort of your own home!

THE ECONOMY MAY BE IN THE DOGHOUSE, but that doesn’t mean you and your four-legged friends can’t have a little fun this holiday season. Here’s a sampling of some doggone great events taking place during the month of December:

Saturday, December 5 & Sunday, December 6 – Home for the Holidays Adoption Fair. The Santa Barbara County Shelter, which includes K-9 PALS (dogs) and ASAP (cats) is bursting at the seams with healthy, lovable cats and dogs and each and every one of them would love to find a home for the holidays. Stop by the shelter (5473 Overpass Road) from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and select a new best friend or simply enjoy face painting, a bake sale, stocking stuffers and a raffle to help support life-saving shelter programs. The cost to adopt a dog during the fair is only $35.00; all cats and kittens are only $10.00 (that’s a $55.00 savings over regular adoption fees!). Visit www.k-9pals.org or www.asapcats.org for more information.?

Sunday, December 6 – Santa Paws is coming to…Dioji! From 1:00 – 4:00 pm, stop by Dioji K-9 Resort & Athletic Club (across from Costco at 7340 Hollister Avenue in Goleta) and have your dog and/or kid’s photo snapped with “Santa Paws.” Photo packages start at $15.00 and all proceeds go to DAWG (Dog Adoption and Welfare Group). Photos by Bonnie Baker, DAWG’s official photographer. For more information, call Dioji at (805) 685-6068 or visit www.dioji.com.

Saturday, December 19 – The Inquisitive Canine Open House. Join Joan Hunter Mayer (dog trainer extraordinaire) and her pooch, Poncho as they celebrate the joyous holiday season. From 2:00 to 4:00 pm, their studio at 2159 Palma Drive, Suite D in Ventura, will ?be open to human and canine friends, so drop in. say hello, enjoy a snack (yes, Joan will be baking), and shop for some great gifts for your canine friends. Poncho will be raffling off some nifty prizes too! Learn more by calling Joan at (805) 650-8500 or visiting www.theinquisitivecanine.com.?

PET OF THE WEEK – PELE

Pele, a 2-year-old neutered male Border collie mix, has everything you could want in a dog: He’s athletic, attentive, eager to work, smart, and good with other dogs. One caveat: Unlike most other Border collies, Pele wants to sit in your lap – all 35 pounds of him! If you’re looking for a (big!) lap dog, then Pele’s your guy. Meet him at DAWG, 5480 Overpass Road, off Patterson Avenue, or call (805) 681-0561 for more information.
