Officials warn about high surf

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Jan. 12, 2010

Weather officials are urging local residents to use caution when visiting the beach this week, as a large westerly swell is expected to bring high surf and rip currents to Central and Southern California through Friday morning.

West-facing beaches in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties will bear the brunt of the swell beginning this morning, with waves topping out at 8 feet by this evening.

“Surf will continue to increase with breakers peaking on Wednesday from 6 to 9 feet, with sets to 12 feet possible,” according to a National Weather Service alert.

Officials said the surf should begin to decline through Thursday; a high surf advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. today through 9 a.m. on Friday.

“Even the most experienced swimmers should stay out of the waters through much of this week,” according to the advisory. “Rocks and jetties will be especially dangerous, as waves can unexpectedly sweep persons into the water.”
