Fund established to support UCSB students with serious illness

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Jan. 27, 2010

A $50,000 gift from singer Jack Johnson and his wife, Kim, will support UC Santa Barbara students with serious medical conditions, university officials announced yesterday.

The Johnsons made the donation in recognition of Danny Riley, the cousin of Kim Johnson who was attending UC Santa Barbara when he died of brain cancer in 2007. The Danny Riley Fund will aid undergraduates with cancer and serious illnesses by offering financial support, medication, housing, adaptive equipment and other needs.

“Our cousin, Danny Riley, lived life to the fullest and didn’t let his battle with cancer deter him from his dream of attending UCSB,” Jack Johnson said in a prepared statement. “Kim and I created the Danny Riley Fund to support students who face similar challenges and to pass along Danny’s zest for life.”

Riley was diagnosed with brain cancer in his junior year of high school and wrote about his experience when applying to UCSB. He also shared his cousin’s passion for music and sang background vocals on one of Johnson’s recordings.
