John Thyne to run for City Council

By JOSHUA MOLINA — April 23, 2009

He’s been called one of Santa Barbara’s most eligible bachelors. And now he wants to be on the City Council.

John Thyne, an attorney, real estate broker and one half of Goodwin & Thyne Properties told the Daily Sound this week that he wants to bring a “small business approach” to the city and help Santa Barbara fix its budget problems and stem the wave of gang violence.

“Rightly or wrongly, there’s a perception that we have a huge increase in gang violence,” Thyne, 41, said. “I am interested in the gang violence injunctions in Oxnard, but only we offer successful alternatives.”

The Boston-native joins an increasingly congested field of candidates vying for a seat on the City Council in the November 3rd election. As many as four seats could change hands, making this race one of the most dynamic and crucial elections in recent memory.

Thyne, who registered as Republican in 2000 because he was a John McCain supporter, but has since changed to “Declined to State,” said he will bring a moderate voice to the council and is prepared to raise whatever amount of money necessary to spread his message.

Friends and supporters have encouraged him to jump into the race, he said, at a time when the city needs some fiscal leadership. Santa Barbara faces a potential $10.5 million budget shortfall next fiscal year.

“The City Council is essentially a $200 million business,” he said. Thyne knows a lot about running a successful small business, even if he has incurred the wrath of some Santa Barbara realtors. He’s lived in the city for about a decade, but started his residential and commercial real estate brokerage and mortgage company in 2004.

Thyne is popular among buyers and sellers because his company will represent them for 1.5 percent. In typical real estate deals, an agent representing both the buyer and the seller charges 6 percent commission.

Thyne scoffs at the idea contention that he is undercutting his competitors buy lowering fees.

“The good ones (Realtors) recognize it’s a different way to do business,” Thyne said over coffee recently at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. “We are making a conscientious decision to earn less. I think it’s immoral to profit grossly.”

They cheery Thyne brings a complex background to the race. As a boy he wanted to become a Catholic priest, but chose not after he realized that he wanted to have a wife and children. He’s currently active at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Santa Barbara.

He holds a law degree from the University of Tulsa, College of Law and bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Conneticut.

In Santa Barbara he has been active in multiple organizations, including the Santa Barbara Young Professionals Group, Santa Barbara County Bar Association and the Santa Barbara Single Catholics.

Single with no children, Thyne was also chosen as a Most Eligible Bachelor in 2006, by a defunct quarterly women-focused magazine. But on his way home from a subsequent bachelor auction staged by the magazine, he was arrested and later convicted of driving under the influence. His blood alcohol content level at the time was more than double the legal limit.

Thyne is not the only candidate in the council race with a drunken driving conviction. Olivia Uribe, associate director of the Santa Barbara County Action Network, had a DUI in 2008. Both Thyne and Uribe are being advised or represented by political consultant James Kyriaco, who has had success representing county supervisor Janet Wolf and current and former councilmembers Roger Horton and Brian Barnwell.

When asked whether the drunken driving convictions should matter to voters, Kyriaco said the voters will decide.

“It’s up the voters if it’s an issue or not,” said Kyriaco, who is also advising mayoral candidate Iya Falcone. “Voters tend to have really good instincts for what matters.”

Thyne, whose brother is actor, "T.J." Thyne, said he’s eager to serve and is excited about bringing some sensible leadership to the council. Throughout his lifetime he has lived in 17 different places he said, but Santa Barbara is where he belongs.

“It didn’t matter whether I was digging ditches or sweeping the streets, I decided I was going to come to this town.

Over the course of the next several weeks, Thyne will be assembling his campaign team, sharpening his strategy and seeking endorsements. But there’s only one big endorsement that he said he is looking for.

“There’s only one endorsement that I am after, and that’s the Santa Barbara voter,” Thyne said.

Other candidates in the race include, Harwood Bendy White, Dianne Channing, David Pritchett, Lane Anderson. Others considering a run include Frank Hotchkiss, Catherine McCammon. Incumbent Grant House is running for re-election.

The Iya Falcone slate is forming. John Thyne is a Republican. He only changed to "decline" a couple of weeks ago.

: 4/23/2009

wow this is a mess. Im almost ready to sit this election out.

Silly Council : 4/23/2009

HA,HA,HA,HA....The only one that's worth my vote is Lane Anderson.

Time for a change : 4/23/2009

Thyne has a very tangible record of service in the City of Santa Barbara. He is one of the most charitable people I know. If you meet him or talk to people who know him, you will see that about him instantly.

: 4/23/2009

Well, if he doesn't win the election, maybe he'll at least find a wife.

Dear time for a change, : 4/23/2009

John Thyne joins a lot of boards and then flakes on them. He hasn't impressed me one bit. How he's going to fit City Council into it all I don't know.

: 4/23/2009

If you have been convicted of a DUI or assault please wait at least 5 years before running for public office. Then we know you’ve (probably) reformed.

ps. the last thing we need is another drunk on City Council.

No Wonder : 4/23/2009

You have the current mess because you keep voting for the same liberals into office. Keep criticizing this guy and don't vote for him but don't complain when your silly council keeps making all the wrong moves

Drunk Drivers in charge of the City Budget : 4/23/2009

I have to agree with the comment encouraging candidates to at least complete their criminal probation before deciding to run for office. I worked for many years counseling DUI Offenders and I can assure you most people who are arrested for this crime have an alcohol problem, especially those with elevated BALs such as Mr. Thyne is said to have had at the time of his arrest. The irony of having the field crowded with DUI Offenders is particularly amusing when I think of the PJ O'Rourke quote, "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

The Bachelor Sounds good, BUT.... : 4/23/2009

On paper, the Bachelor sounds like he may make a quality candidate, but there are numerous items that concern me: 1.A DUI DOUBLE THE LEGAL LIMIT. That is not a few beers, but instead a blatant disregard for the safety of Santa Barbara. HAS HE EVEN COMPLETED HIS TREATMENT? DOES HE STILL DRINK? 2. Being respresented by James Kyriaco who also represented county supervisor Janet Wolf and current and former councilmembers Roger Horton and Brian Barnwell. DO WE REALLY NEED MORE OF THE SAME POLITICAL OPPORTUNISTS WHO GO THROUGH THE SAME VENUES TO TRY AND GET ELECTED AS ALL POLITICIANS? DO WE REALLY WANT SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A POLITICAL CONSULTANT TO CLEAN UP HIS IMAGE FROM THE DUI ARREST? 3. Who wants a representative from a failed mortgage industry? 4. Do we need ANOTHER LAWYER creating laws ? That seems contradictory. 5. A McCain supporter who reregistered to "Decline to State" prior to his Council run for political leverage.....THIS IS MANIPULATION! Atleast have some principles and stand by them, if you are all the man that those who voted you for SB Bachelor believe! 6. I find it very suspicious that someone who decides to fore go becoming a Catholic Priest to pursue a family instead, is STILL SINGLE AT THE AGE OF 40, with NO WIFE OR KIDS ANYWHERE TO BE SEEN!!!! Maybe it wasn't about the family, but his bachelorhood. At least be forthright and honest! Basically, what I want to say is that we do NOT need another insider who is playing the political games. It is time to vote for Freedom, someone who represents the average working Santa Barbara citizen, and who doesn't believe that government needs to impose rules that dictate how we live our lives. My name is Justin Tevis and I filed my letter of intent to run for SB City Council on April 15th to make a statement. I have no political ties to any insiders or big groups, but am your every day Freedom Fighter who loves American values and principles. Check out my website.... www.webstarts.com/tevis4council. It has been difficult to break the news with no big money or big names backing me. However, I am very adamant about my core values and will never be corrupted by the system, as many candidates already are.... CHEERS TO FREEDOM! TEVIS4COUNCIL@GMAIL.COM

Hhmmmmm : 4/23/2009

John is a good guy so who means well. Unfortunately, some of the comments regarding his ineffectiveness in serving local non-profits is fairly accurate. We can certainly do better in this town.

Not another drunk : 4/23/2009

This guy stinks of hypocrisy. A 40 year who displays a blatant disregard for the public safety of private citizens by getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated does not deserve to be seated in a public office. Is there really a good reason why a wealthy and powerful person cannot pay for a cab after a night of drinking? Oh yea he got too drunk to think logically. Good thing he chose not to become a priest. Who knows what kind of mess he would have gotten into if he had a job where he would be surrounded by free wine every Sunday.

Public Safety First! : 4/23/2009

No promotions from the current Council or activists with liberal national social engineering agendas. Only people serious about local CITY business such as public safety and the budget shortfall, not global reform. That eliminates Pritchett (self promoter for his amateur hour cable show and clean creek and dog off leash advocate), Anderson (anti-war advocate - go run for Congress Lane we don't need anti war activists in local business), Channing (PUEBLO endorsed social justice advocate interested in taking your money to house illegal immigrants) and House (more of the same). In the 2005 none of these had public safety as a priority, and we see the results every day. Who's left? I would go for Frank anyday over all of these., but tell us more about Bendy and Catherine?

Slander already? : 4/23/2009

What's with all the slander? And from an opposing candidate even. Mudslinging already Justin instead of giving us your qualifications you tear down your rival? Could it be because he's not a senseless self-promoting liberal clown like the ones that currently run the City? Finally someone willing to consider gang injunctions and putting safety and the budget first. Tell me nobody here has ever had a few drinks before driving. The only difference seems to be he got caught. Sounds pretty human to me. Not having children seems to be less distraction.

Response to Slander Already : 4/23/2009

Not a self promoter? The guy is on the front page of the Daily Sound. Give me a break. I also like how you use Obama tactics and side steps questions. Like the one about his drinking habits. I hate that he has presented himself as unapologetic and unrepentant drunk driver. "I'll let the voter decide." Really, no explanation, just ignore it and hope it goes away. He supposedly running on a patform of safety, yet he endangered lives when he got in the car while intoxicated. Drinking and driving as a 40 year old man is a bone head move. We don't need anymore boneheads in public office.

Strigh shooter

: 4/23/2009

The competition is already running attacks and the campaign hasn't even officially started. Pathetic.

: 4/23/2009

What's with all these anti-drinking liberals? I bet all you idiots want to try and ban drinkning again too? This is the real world! Sh*t happens you cry baby libs! The guy likes to drink so what? I really don't care. And what's with Justin trying to pin the mortgage meltdown on John. Maybe Justin needs to brush up on economics, because he obvisouly doesn't know anything if he thinks the mortgage mess is one guy's fault.

: 4/23/2009

A drunk who promotes safety? doubt it. This guy sounds about as hypocritical as you can get. This is NOT what we need in our city council. Santa Barbara doesn't need someone from Boston; why not put a Santa Barbara native who actually cares for the city, and not just himself? We need council members who are here to serve the hard working citizens of this beautiful city. He can't even follow through with the boards he joins and obviously lacks commitment. It sounds like this "bachelor" is all show, and no go. PS- to "slander already?"-- "a few drinks before driving" is quite an understatement. The article reads that "His blood alcohol content level at the time was more than double the legal limit." That is purely irresponsible. I suggest that he focus on his own issues before trying to fix ours. -concerned Santa Barbara citizen

: 4/23/2009

So is John gay or straight?

Drinking & Driving is NOT a Joke : 4/23/2009

During the summer of 2008 my sister’s best friend was killed by a drunk driver. Her friend was in her 60’s but still an avid jogger. The penalties for drinking and driving need be MORE substantial if we’re going to learn from anything other than tragedy. Thyne and Uribe may be a good catalyst to get us talking about this terrible behavior –but I don’t think I could bring myself to vote for them (even if I agread with their policies).

Let's talk : 4/23/2009

I appreciate public discourse and everyone's right to opine. I particularly respect those who have posted their real names. Some of you have raised questions regarding my decision to enter this race which was not made lightly, and I am happy to meet with you to discuss them. There is certainly no valid excuse for the DUI and I can only hope it is considered in a broader context. Those willing to make the sacrifice to enter public service, including those working for the City, are sometimes discouraged by such criticism but, provided it is not spiteful, I find it healthy. If you would like to meet and discuss your concerns, please call my office at: (805) 963-9958 and schedule a time to sit down with me. I hope you all vote for the candidates you believe will best serve our city.

John Thyne

"Drunk that promotes safety?" : 4/23/2009

Bad rationale. When I was growing up I would skateboard without a helmet, then once I slipped back and hit my head really hard.. mild concussion. Now when I skateboard I wear my helmet and I tell all the little kids to wear their helmet too. So they don't hit their head. Do you think all the kids should just disregard me as a hypocrite, for promoting safe skateboarding since I once hit my head? Find the good in people!

One of the smartest men in Santa Barbara... : 4/23/2009

Some of you people are insufferable. The president of the United States has openly confessed to using marijuana, cocaine, and who knows what else, and you people want to criticize a city council candidate for a petty D.U.I.? Yes, it's petty. Save me your stories of personal tragedy. I can't believe something so collateral and meaningless even made it into the article. More importantly, John Thyne is a very, very smart man, has given much of himself to this community (why wasn't more of THAT included in the article?), and we'd be lucky to have him on the city council. Thyne's qualifications are leaps and bounds above those of anyone running for or serving on the city council.

Riding a skate board w/o a helmet risks your health and well being. Driving a car well driving drunk risks my life and that of my children. How can you compare the two?

Using marijuana or cocaine is fine w/me as long as you don't do it WHILE DRIVING A VEHICLE (or operating any heavy machinery).

I'm talkin' here! . . . : 4/23/2009

I read the story and the comments and I like what I see. I've had a similar life. Starting in 1980 I voted for Reagan, then Perot, Nader, Kerry and Obama. So tell me about myself? Like you people have been telling me about John Thyne. Is changing your mind a bad thing? I think it's a smart thing. Adapt often. Mr. Thyne seems as qualified as any other candidate. Justin Tevis, please be nice to people over 40. I went to your website. Whoa, you look young, and that's good for you. However, 60 is the new 40, so 40 must be the new. . . 26. Which is your age, right? Back in 1985 I was 26 and working for John McCain. ( then I came to my senses and said, "forget this," I'm moving to Santa Barbara!) I think you should take a decade or two and enjoy life. Don't serve the people, live it up!

Dan Seibert

true record : 4/23/2009

Mr Thyne gives lip service to how the real estate community (and the community in general) views him. In the spirit of transparency in government, Mr. Thyne should release the total contents of his file (and the file for his company) at the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors. This would give the community true insight into Mr. Thyne.

Public Safety! is so right. We simply cannot have anyone who supports television, clean creeks, or dogs get elected to the city council.

DUH!

Bad Logic... : 4/24/2009

"Using marijuana or cocaine is fine w/me as long as you don't do it WHILE DRIVING A VEHICLE (or operating any heavy machinery)." Fine with you or not, using marijuana and cocaine is no less serious a VIOLATION OF LAW. The same people who are prattling on about a simple D.U.I. conviction were dismissing Obama's cocaine use as a nonstarter just a few months ago (hypocrites). Most importantly, despite any emotional pleas to the contrary, no one was hurt by Thyne's D.U.I. You can save the incessant bleating about "risk" for another day. NO. ONE. WAS. HURT. Batting around a city council candidate's lone D.U.I. as a political issue is absolutely insane. INSANE!

She Comes First : 4/24/2009

While driving double-drunk is indeed a serious crime and public safety problem, the second highest concern of the straight women of Santa Barbara is about why a "most eligible bachelor" won at an auction was driving home that night instead of doing his duty as the auction prize.

Are you now or ever have been on parole? : 4/24/2009

Looks like the council election has its own new JMike!

John Thyne for City Council : 4/24/2009

Having personal known and professionally dealt with Mr. Thyne I can say without reserve that he is more qualified for the position than those running against him. He has a huge heart, gives more time than anyone I know, and is dedicated to the goals he sets. Having him on the council will be a breath of fresh air. Party affiliation is irrelevent in this case. And don't even go there on the "drunk official" line. He made a mistake that most Santa Barbarians get away with frequently.

Jason Vedder, DC

Let's not confuse the issue here. : 4/24/2009

First, is he qualified for the position? Second, is he more qualified than the other candidates? Anyone who knows him knows John is a nice guy and means well though he does seem to come across awkwardly sometimes. Whether he is qualified is another issue. I don't believe he has any experience in local government and am not really interested in somebody learning on the job. However, he certainly seems smarter than some of our other candidates and thus might be able to better analyze the issues before the council. By the way, he didn't switch parties here......he just changed to "Declined to State" for purposes of this election. With respect to the DUI, anyone with a DUI received when they were driving at twice the legal alcohol limit clearly has a drinking problem. The suggestion that Thyne at least be done with probation before running is probably a good one for him and the public he wants to serve. However, the fact that he received a DUI should not in and of itself disqualify him from consideration. Did he learn his lesson? Is he still drinking? The answers to these questions matter. Lastly, please don't compare Thyne to JMike. The two have absolutely nothing in common. Thyne is a serious candidate and is not running to further his other careers.

This voter doesn't like it : 4/24/2009

Driving with a BAC twice that of the legal limit isn't a mistake, it is an arrogant act and a disregard for others. No it is not petty, it is a misdemeanor crime with a mandatory jail sentence, and it remains on your public record for 10 years. This guy is just lucky he did get pinched and didn't kill someone. I just hope John Thyne learned something when he was behind bars.

Above the law : 4/24/2009

A lawyer getting busted for twice the legal limit? Of course this matters. This shows an arrogant above the law mentality that I can not stand. I will not support hypocrisy in any form!

Let's call a spade a spade : 4/24/2009

Tulsa Law?! He can't be that smart. Is that school even an ABA accredited school? I tried to find it in top 100 list and it was nowhere to be found. Tulsa is either a phony degree mill or it must just be sorry enough to take the very bottom of LSAT test takers. Please do not call the guy an Einstein when it is obvious he is not. It is hard to picture a Boston native moving to Oklahoma unless they had no other options. Harvard Law is in Boston. Why didn't he go there? Or Yale, Berkeley, Stanford NYU, Columbia, Chicago, or Texas? At least those schools are nationally recognized and only the brightest get into them. If I were him I'd never mention Tulsa Law again. It's really quite embarrassing.

Local Politics Makes Me Sick : 4/24/2009

Thyne changed to "Declined to State" for purposes of this election???? What a cynical move. Did Mr. James Kyriaco advise him to do this? I remember Kyriaco working on lots of Democratic campaigns over the years. Now he’s working for a Republican? And Iya Falcone? I felt bad for Kyriaco when Travis Armstrong from the News Press attacked him. But now he’s backing the News Press candidates? I guess there right when they stay politics makes strange bed fellows.

I was for it before I was against it. I was a Republican before I was a Declined to State.

: 4/24/2009

What did Kyriaco do to get the attention of the News Press?

Qualified Candidate : 4/24/2009

For those of you that are saying Thyne is the most qualified –it just goes to show you don’t know the candidates well enough. I’m looking forward to a complete article on Planning Commissioner Harwood White.

Way to go John Thyne! Sounds like he is interested in the right issues and will bring a reasonable approach to problem solving. I will be interested to learn more about him, though I will probably rely on the news - not anonymous comments on a website - to get that information.

: 4/24/2009

everyone is interested in the same issues. an "interest" in the issues is NOT interesting.

Stranger and Stranger : 4/24/2009

I think it’s strange that Thyne and Uribe would go with Kyriaco. Just LAST YEAR: “County Supervisor Janet Wolf’s administrative assistant James Kyriaco announced his resignation after being contacted by Santa Barbara News-Press editor Travis Armstrong last week regarding his record of public intoxication and driving while under the influence.” Kyriaco has been arrested twice for DUI. “Resignation Rocks S.B. Political World” www.independent.com/news/2008/mar/27/resignation-rocks-sb-political-world I think these candidates are bound to lead Santa Barbara down a road of scandal. Just what we don’t need right now. Is Kyriaco out to prove something? If it’s that drinking and driving isn’t a serious crime then that’s too bad. Because it is. The family of 18-year-old Adrianna Bachan knows what drunk drivers can do to families.

: 4/24/2009

like I said before this is a big mess. at least I'm learning quickly who I won't be voting for.

Reality Check : 4/24/2009

"This guy is just lucky... [he] didn't kill someone." Forgetting the candidate for the moment, drunk drivers are not the scourge of our roadways that you and other people's overly dramatic comments suggest. 1.4 million drivers were arrested for D.U.I. in 2007, according to the CDC (URL below). This figure is claimed by the CDC to be representative of just 1% of annual U.S. D.U.I. events. Fatal accidents involving, but not necessarily caused by, alcohol-impaired-drivers are overwhelmingly single-vehicle accidents, resulting in the death of an unrestrained driver. About half of these deaths were motorcyclists. Using the CDC and NHTSA numbers, the risk of an alcohol-impaired-driver killing someone other than himself in a crash is 0.0003 (and half of those deaths are passengers of the drunk driver). Put another way, of the CDC estimated 140,000,000 annual episodes of drunk driving in the U.S., crashes involving alcohol-impaired-drivers in '07 resulted in 4,855 deaths (excluding the driver); 1601 of the deaths were occupants of other vehicles. Drill down on the alcohol fatality numbers even further and you'll discover numerous other confounding factors; i.e. a significant number of the drivers had a history of recorded speeding tickets and license suspensions. Again, according to the CDC and NTSA numbers, 99.999% of drunk driving incidents involve no public fatalities. While clearly not a behavior we want to encourage, I think we can stop with the histrionics and moral indignation. http://www.cdc.gov/MotorVehicleSafety/Impaired_Driving/impaired-drv_factsheet.html http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/810801.PDF.

Let's defend DUI & domestic violence some more. What is next?

So proud

: 4/25/2009

Yeah that is just what this campaign should be about, let’s educate people about how Drinking and Driving is not really that bad. The fact that too many people do it is the very reason I would think first before electing someone like this to the City Council. We should not be normalizing this type of behavior. I am not saying that one DUI should disqualify someone from ever holding public office. But yes we should weigh the facts. How long ago was it? 1 year or 10? What was the blood alcohol level? Was anyone injured?

Loud Whispers Proves One Thing, : 4/25/2009

One thing I can tell you after reading your post. We don’t need any fact twisting lawyers on City Council. Most drunk driving Drunk Driving incidents involve no public fatalities IS NOT THE SAME AS SAYING most driving fatalities involve alcohol or narcotics. DRIVING WHILE IMPAIRED IS DANGEROUS to passengers, pedestrians and other drivers. This behavior should not be excused. This is a violent crime and should be recognized as such. You want to spew statistics at people? How about these: About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives. OR: A first time drunk driving offender on average has driven drunk 87 times prior to being arrested. http://www.madd.org/Drunk-Driving/Drunk-Driving/Statistics.aspx

You Need A Reality Check

Don't Drink and Vote... : 4/25/2009

I post the hard data from the Centers for Disease Control and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with links, and you respond with a couple of alarmist quotes from a political organization's web site? Puh-leeze. Most driving fatalities DO NOT involve alcohol or drugs, much less an amount of drugs or alcohol significant enough to cause impairment. If you don't know that much, you should stay away from the keyboard AND the ballot box. If a first time offender drives impaired 87 times prior to being arrested (like anyone would know), that would equate to hundreds of millions of impaired driving episodes without any harmful consequences prior to all of those first arrests (1.4 million arrests in '07). Do the math and use some common sense. The other wildly contorted claim you cite is the suggestion that 3 in 10 drivers will at some point be involved in an alcohol-related crash. Alcohol-related? That number, intended to evoke hysterics at first blush, means absolutely nothing because the words have purposely been parsed to include incidents where the driver was NOT impaired, may NOT have been at fault, and where alcohol may NOT have even played a role. Drinking and driving should certainly be discouraged and my comments should NOT be interpreted as condoning driving while impaired. D.U.I., however, is not a violent crime (holding back chuckles) and those who have made the mistake of driving while impaired need not be treated like child molesters or murderers.

As a Realtor he doesn't honor sign laws. : 4/25/2009

Mr. Thyne appears to have his own sense of legality. His real estate sign on Valerio promoting a property on Calle Boca Del Canon is against the city sign rules. You can only post a sign on your property. I have called his office twice about this sign and I have been ignored. This might sound small but imagine how many real estate signs there would be if they could be posted anywhere. It is a strictly against the ordinance and he should know that, especially as I've alerted him twice. I don't want him representing me!

So what Loud Whispers is saying... : 4/25/2009

So what Loud Whispers is suggesting, is that it is okay for Drunk Drivers to kill people, just as long as they don't kill very many people. That is what I call bad logic, and one terrible argument. Loud whispers probably went to Tulsa Law too.

As if... : 4/25/2009

Face it - the only thing that scares most of the opposition is that he is not a Democrat, so like true libs instead of debating on the issues - they go straight for the jugular and attack his character. Hypocritical character assasination. Like liberals never drink... that's hilarious.

: 4/25/2009

Character Assasination? Go ahead and drink. Just don't drive. And certainly not at two times the legal limit. I'm sure Thyne has money to pay for a cab. He's made plenty in the real-estate business. I"m sure he'll get plenty of developer money to help him buy a seat on Council. Thyne is against lowering the building heights. So, I won’t be voting for him on this one basis.

Ego Out Of Control : 4/25/2009

John sleeps with his students too. But hey, that’ll probably just get him more votes. This man has an ego that is out of control. He probably hopes you think City Councilmembers are hot.

Law School Girl

: 4/25/2009

Sorry JThyne, you aren't in the Northeast coast anymore. If you want to combine alcohol and politics, you can go back to the New England area and hangout with Teddy Kennedy. First JMike, now JThyne what a joke.

Hello? : 4/26/2009

Is this the best Republican Santa Barbara has to offer?

Chill Out : 4/26/2009

Well, you people surely do make it clear why NO ONE wants to run for office. I took the time to read the "comments" and they lack substance if not sting. Ya know, some of the best people you meet 1) do drink a bit now and then and 2) learn that it's best not to drive if that happens. The paucity of anything resembling SUBSTANCE here is amazing. No wonder we get nitwits for City Council, Mayor, et al. I don't know if I'd vote for Thyne or not, but he has the chuztpah to do a lot of things in life that you lazy "commenters" have probably never even THOUGHT of trying. Chill out. Give the man a chance. He can't possibly be worse than the FOOLS we currently have. From what I know of him, he could only be a CHANGE for the better.

sbnative

: 4/26/2009

I wouldn't want to run with all this baggage either. LOL.

No H8 : 4/27/2009

It is well known that Thyne is pro-life & anti-LGBTQ rights. You may say this doesn’t matter b/c it’s not a city issue? Maybe. Although clinic safety & hate crimes are issues cities deal with. Sum of you won’t vote for activist candidates. Well I won’t vote for Thyne 4 these reasons. This is personal 2 me & my family.

Stop the H8

Stop the lies : 4/27/2009

Stop the H8 should stop the lies. "it is well known.." nice way to start a rumor! What other lies will campaigns plant here next?

Stop H8 is a lier!

Going too far : 4/27/2009

It is well known that John Thyne is no enemy of the LGBTQ community and supports laws that protect choice. It is shameful that some operatives are willing to go to any length to smear a candidate for their personal gain.

Disgusted

just because he's a Catholic : 4/27/2009

doesn't mean John Thyne uses dogma and doctrine as substitutes for public policy. I know John and these attacks on him are just a bunch of garbage.

smear campaign

when will it end? : 4/27/2009

I think the Daily Sound needs to take a serious look at requiring registration as a a requirement of posting on their website. John Thyne has been accused of all kinds of things here, by people who are not at all acountable, to the point that he has felt the need to respond personally. Is this the future of journalism? at least the Independent requires creating a registered identity

clean up this website - stop the smears

Rough Crowd...... : 4/27/2009

Okay, he's an idiot for getting a DUI but some of the rest of these comments are just crazy. First, he teaches a class at a local unaccredited law school. These are adults that attend there (many with full time jobs) so please don't try to make it sound creepy if he has ever dated one of them. Second, there are plenty of reasons he may have chosen to attend Tulsa Law School (e.g., less expensive). I find it funny that somebody assumes he's stupid simply because of where he chose to get his graduate degree. As for his position on the issues, perhaps you should ask the candidate himself rather than make assumptions. And how did Thyne's DUI morph into a claim that Iya has a drinking problem. That couldn't be further from the truth and is just an utterly ridiculous claim.

No H8 : 4/27/2009

Not affiliated w/ campaigns. Although maybe I will be this year. I know this about Thyne b/c he talks about it openly. Thyne has been very candid w/his students. There are a lot of people who know his position on these subjects. People should know he’s not a moderate Republican.

Stop The H8

: 4/27/2009

Let’s get back to facts. JThyn! is exactly why we don’t need a lawyer on Santa Barbara City Council: “Rightly or wrongly, there’s a perception that we have a huge increase in gang violence.” Translation: Even if there hasn’t been a huge increase in gang violence I’m going to exploit your fears for votes. Strait talkers please!

: 4/27/2009

Who decided John was the most eligible bachelor anyway? I think we need a recount! BTW dating or sleeping with your law students may not break the law but it sure makes the rest of us wonder about the integrity of your grading and who gets special favors in class.

Lawyers : 4/27/2009

Seems like someone comes on and tries to damage control now and again. Face it he’s a lawyer. Lawyers got a lot of enemies. And they’re known to drink a lot too.

FYI : 4/27/2009

A lot of the top 100 ABA accredited law schools have a less expensive tutiotion than Tulsa. Heck there are even schools in the top 25 that have a cheaper tuition, but here's the kicker you have to have the brains to get into them. Nobody would turn down an opportunity to Berkeley Law, Chicago, etc to go to Tulsa Law. Give me a break.

Hey Reality Check, : 4/27/2009

I like how you use the acronym CDC rather than the "Center for Disease Control". Alcoholism IS a disease and a common symptom is a DUI. The Center for Disease control recommends that all states reduce the legal level for drinking and driving to 0.08%. They recommend this because it will save hundreds of lives. Driving impaired is dangerous. I agree with the people who have already posted that Mr. Thyne should probably at least wait until he’s off of probation to run for City Council.

Keeping it Real

: 4/27/2009

Tulsa = Tier 4 AND it's $27,634 per year. (US News and World Report).

still lying : 4/27/2009

stop the h8 is still telling lies. Thyne supports pro-choice policies and is an ally of the LGBTQ community on important issues like marriage equality. which candidate(s) are you working for this year

h8 is full of it

glass houses : 4/27/2009

there are definitely some people living in glass houses on this site while throwing stones. they should be careful

stop the smears

: 4/27/2009

John Thyne is a criminal. He has been arrested and convicted of a misdemeanor crime, he has served a mandatory jail sentence, and is currently on probation. No this isn't an aspiring Jerry Springer guest, although it does sound a lot like one, it is an aspiring Santa Barbara Council Member. Let's send pieces of trash like this a message and elect a civil, law abiding citizen instead.

: 4/27/2009

“The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.” Henry The Sixth, Part 2 Act 4, scene 2, 71–78 I guess I’m insisting violence now? The Daily Sound needs a login? I guess although it would be less interesting to read and I’d comment less (always loosing my passwords).

Hardworking students want to know! : 4/27/2009

Has John Thyne ever had sex with one of his Law Students? If he has, those students should have their unaccredited JD's stripped, and John Thyne should be banned from teaching. John Thyne lacks ethics, and moral judgment. He is bad for Santa Barbara.

If this message board is any indication : 4/27/2009

If John Thyne and his people are trying to require the Daily Sound to require passwords, it only proves what a typical Bush Republican he really is. All about huge government policing everything we do. If he and his people are so hell bent on controlling this indepedent web site, imagine what they would do to the city of Santa Barbara if they had real power. They would probably spend millions of dollars trying to monitor everything SB loclas did and drive the city into the ground with massive deficit spending

No H8 : 4/27/2009

This came from Tyhne himself. If he's had a change of heart more power to him!

Stop the H8

still lying : 4/27/2009

this is like a sprint to the lowest common denominator. Why are you making accusations when you have no proof and won't use your real names?

smear campaign

interesting to note : 4/27/2009

nobody has been making sleazy allegations about the other candidates in this race.

curious

: 4/27/2009

For the most part these allegations are based on the facts in the article. That two candidates who have recent DUIs are getting public criticism doesn't seem that strange to me. Maybe the other candidates have skeletons in their closets? Haven’t heard about it. If they do they should probably come clean though.

What I think : 4/27/2009

This guys made a lot of money and his name is plastered all over town. People are jealous. And probably a little shocked he would run for office while still on probation.

so weird : 4/27/2009

do Jeremy and Emily do anything other than post nasty slander on blogs? do they realize how they leave their 'fingerprints' by the words they choose?

Weary of the Same Old Thing

: 4/27/2009

skeletons in their closets give it away?

hahaha!

U know... : 4/27/2009

I’d almost feel sorry for these candidates. If it wasn’t for the fact that they broke the law.

BLOW THEM A NEW ONE : 4/27/2009

You know they're runnin' scared if John's getting this much press!!! WAY TO GO JOHN!!! Take all the self-important puffheads in this town and blow them a new one. From what I can see they all deserve it! (At least you roused them from their ever-righteous-Pinot-Noir-induced stupor...) And I for one admire your guts in doing so.

sbnative

: 4/27/2009

All publicity is good publicity according to JMIKE!

Justin is dreamy : 4/28/2009

But what about Thyne's running-mate, Justin Tevis? http://s1.webstarts.com/tevis4council/

Justin Teatotaller

Obviously not a joke like Jmike : 4/28/2009

When a candidate gets this much slander and elicits this much fear you know he must have something good going for him. Of course with the structure of this forum I COULD BE JOHN THYNE saying this! That's how credible these comments are!

Stupid place for a town hall meeting : 4/28/2009

Not only that. I COULD BE THE SAME PERSON SPAMMING and leaving a hundred anti thyne lies and comments!

The Real Eligible Bachelor : 4/28/2009

I’d vote Justin Tevis for most eligible bachelor over John Thyne any day! But wouldn’t vote for either of them for Santa Barbara City Council.

Lady

Battle of the J's : 4/28/2009

ok lets see do we want the woman beater on cocaine JMike or do we want the drunk driver that sleeps with law students JThyne? I'd say Thyne has more class....even if it wasn't all just drive by slander.

: 4/29/2009

jmike! and thyne aren't even running for the same position. you can not vote for both of them. i be not voting for plenty of people this year.

transplant or local? : 6/25/2009

remember the last transplant, huffington, we need locals.....like das williams, etc... santa barbara has been overtaken by transplants, especially from LA....all these out-of-towners move her, get into politics and screw things up, like in the carpinteria school board...what a mess that was.

When to say when : 9/8/2009

This guy needs to get his sh** together personally...and get honest! He has two DRUNK offenses on record in less than 6 months. He is not willing to admit ...he has a problem....and clearly... he has a problem...many in fact. Clear to me ...clear to many. But you cannot fix a problem you are not willing to admit. How can the mind of this man do anything but harm. Not only to himself, but to the community. This addict throws up a red flag in a desperate attempt to seem "normal". He is not in reality. Clearly he needs help and that help needs to happen on his own time. We just don't need another drunk in SB. Drunk is a cliche. It ain't cool and it represents a lack of awareness and control. The guy has an obsession...not an enlightened goal. John...go get clean and clear and HONEST. If want to serve the community..FIRST DO NO HARM...to yourself or others. Clean up your own mess buster and don't make your problem...our problem. E Menzies independent.com/blogs/sober-spitbath The Sober Spitbath

Thyne is great : 9/10/2009

John Thyne has built a business in Santa Barbara (tough to do) - he volunteers for a bunch of organizations serving the poor and others less fortunate - he teaches at law school - he is active in his church - he is president of the local Bar Association - he really wants to serve the public not himself - he is exactly the type of leader we need on Council. On the DUI and violation let he who has not sinned throw that first stone. This guy is smart and successful and willing to put up with all the BS that the Council deals with. I'm happy he's running and I'm voting for Thyne!

Blogging : 9/11/2009

OK this is bad cuz its 9 Friday nite but you people need to get a life. Holy crap batman, what has this guy ever done to you? The election is about who can help Santa Barbara + Thyne looks like one of the best candidates who * newsflash * is a human too. I watched his ad and liked it. which other candidates have done so much in business and law and volunteering? i think he gets crap because hes not with the political parties. This blog is mean + stupid and i would drop out if i was him because you dont deserve him. hope he dosent read what you write here.

seriously?

re: DUI and city council : 10/9/2009

DUI and city council - Have you been drinking? because I didn't understand one word you said. One suggestion I have, is to grammar//spell check before you post...that would be grrrreaaaaaaat.

UCSBStaff

E Menzies - get your facts straight : 10/11/2009

Mr(s) Menzies, what are you talking about? Thyne had a DUI in 2007 and he was stopped two years later after having had 2 drinks but not being DUI. He stepped up, took responsibility, quit drinking completely and has talked with kids about the dangers of alcohol. Have you met Mr. Thyne?? He is a humble leader with many skills and a huge heart. He is really smart and totally dedicated to the best for Santa Barbara. We would be lucky if he served as a council member.

J Brown

Don't vote for John Thyne if this is true : 10/11/2009

Please check this out and inform your readers truthfully about City Council candidate John Thyne? As a woman who was nearly killed by a drunk driver and nearly lost my 4 year old son back then I find it upsetting that John Thyne is running for any office and especially one that entails my city. Public record shows that he was on probation for a DUI when he was arrested again on another DUI. I do not want this man on the streets anywhere driving much less making decisions about my town. Please do not use my name but please check this out yourself as it is matter of public record and do not put such a man in a place of responsibility until he gets control of his disease and hopefully he will before he kills someone while he is behind the wheel if this is true. (Do not use my name)
