Victor Maccharoli- Hondo, 3, a German Shepard in the Santa Barbara Police K-9 Unit, attacks KEYT reporter John Palminteri during the filming of On Patrol with SBPD.
“COPS” is a television show that features high-speed chases, belligerent criminals and raw, up-close views of the sometimes full-contact sport that is law enforcement.
But that’s “COPS.”
“On Patrol with SBPD,” a half-hour, weekly program that will air on KEYT Channel 3 starting on Sunday, July 12, probably won’t take much from “COPS.”
But it will nonetheless provide a window into the world of police work and “show off,” according to Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez, the hard working police officers and support staff in Santa Barbara.
“This will be a good thing, not just for pr’s sake, but really as a way to share a lot of the services we have [that] the community doesn’t know we have,” Sanchez said.
At a defunct car dealership parking lot yesterday, Sanchez, one of the Police Department’s K-9 units, and a film crew, shot one of the program’s first segments. In it, KEYT reporter John Palminteri dons a protective, dog-bite suit, and is attacked.
Current plans call for the show to run for 14 to 15 weeks, but Sanchez said he hopes it has an even longer string on air.
Linda Distenfield, of PR Store, whose firm is producing the show, said advertising and sponsorships will pay for the costs of filming. Sanchez said the show won’t cost the Police Department a dime.
A couple of years back, Sanchez said a similar television program, “SBPD Live,” was produced by officers and broadcast on channel 18. But when the officers involved in producing the show were needed on patrol, the show ended.
With “On Patrol with SBPD,” Sanchez said he’s looking forward to have an outlet to showcase some of the unique work the Police Department does.
He said the show will also provide an opportunity to shed light on some of the things his department has done to combat a spike in gang violence, which has resulted in the murders of three juveniles over the last two years.
“I’m excited to talk about how we’re dealing with youth violence,” Sanchez said, adding that different segments will focus on the prevention, intervention and suppression side of the issue. “I have no problems showing on TV to our community exactly what I mean when we say we’re on it.”
Sanchez, who will introduce each segment and will be approving each show before it’s aired, said he also hopes to shed light on some of the more vigorous investigations his department conducts, such as murder cases.
When a murder case goes to trial, Sanchez said much of the focus at that point is on what a great job the District Attorney’s Office does to get a conviction. While Sanchez said this is an important piece of the law-enforcement puzzle, he feels the exhaustive hours spent investigating cases by detectives is often lost in the ether.
Sanchez said he wants to show “the boots on the ground, where [detectives] don’t go home for days.”
Some of the installments will feature ride-along tours with officers on patrol, while others will focus on specialized branches of the department, like the K-9 unit.
There might also be a piece on the chief himself, though he said he’s resisting.
“I’m really excited about showing my people off,” Sanchez said. “The more I’m not on camera the happier I’ll be.”
The program will be broadcast from 8-8:30 a.m.
Awesome the Cam Sanchez reality show! : 6/18/2009
This is going to be great! Sanchez showing how he is ON the gang problem. I always love a good comedy! Can't wait! Oh wait, he said youth violence - there is no gang problem in SB. Will it show him coddling gang members at the boys camp, telling them that they can grow up to be Police Chiefs too if they stop acting up? Will it show him at The House of Racists (Casa de la Raza) assuring his homies that he would quit before they make him do anything to help enforce immigration laws? Will it show his guys providing limousine service to escort trapped gang members away from the ones that are threatening and intimidating them , trying to steal Cop's cameras and then just leaving and waving bye bye instead of doing anything about it? My alarm clock is SET!!

Cost : 6/18/2009
The article says PR Store is paying for the production. There's a direct quote from Sanchez saying this won't cost the department a dime. You people really need to read before you type your ignorant little comments. Plus the city budget has absolutely nothing to do with keeping teachers. If people like "wo wo men" and "KJEE Sucks" are our future thanks to the demise of print journalism, please kill me now.

Good Idea! : 6/18/2009
I agree with the the post by COST. Read the article dummies, the show costs the City and the Police department nothing. If he declined the show, you whinners would complain that he is hidding something. You are the type of people that complain about anything and everything...you haven't even seen the show yet! As for the Chief's stance on gangs, one word - GATOR ROLL. Read about it, I already did. The Chief has increased the department's gang unit size by 50 percent. I think he's doing everything he can, it's the parents that need to do their part now.
HA HA HA : 6/19/2009
Chief Sanchez had nothing to do with GATOR ROLL other than to participate and take credit for the whole operation! It is the ONLY significant thing he has done, to suppress gangs. This was an interagency effort, including the county, the state and the Feds, it was NOT Sanchez idea he had no choice but participate. And you are giving him credit? Read about it, I already did: On Wednesday, October 15, the Santa Barbara Police and County Sheriff’s Department JOINED WITH FEDERAL AND STATE AGENCIES to crack down on the Eastside gang as part of Operation Gator Roll. http://www.independent.com/news/2008/oct/16/operation-gator-roll-roll-call/ You think he's going to say No to the the County Sheriff, State, ICE, the FBI ? "you guys go ahead I will catch up to ya" Here's the Chief looking tough like it was all his idea : http://www.independent.com/news/2008/oct/15/feds-take-down-eastside-gangsters/ ”We sent a message to the City of Santa Barbara,” Sanchez said, echoing a charge he made the day after the fatal stabbing on State Street in March 2007. “We will spare nothing to come and get you.” What did he do before or since? October 2008 was a year and a half ago?
: 6/19/2009
Why no GATOR ROLL on the Westsiders? Sound like a half-ass half hearted dog and pony show. Was the gang problem solved after this show a year and a half ago? Then why did he stop there?
GATOR ROLL IS TWO WORDS : 6/19/2009
I think this is great to get a better idea of the police department's difficult job in our beautiful city. They are understaffed and unable to enforce many laws because of B.S. that mayor blum and company strict them with. Criminals have to have how much $$ worth of warrants to get booked into our jail? If you feel the need to badmouth someone let it be the elected officials who keep our city filled with transients and criminals sleeping on our beaches.

Gator Roll and the SBPD : 6/19/2009
Gator Roll was the brain child of several SBPD detectives who brought the idea to Chief Sanchez who endorsed it and facilitated its production with manpower and resources. If Chief Sanchez hadn't endorsed, and facilitatted, Gator Roll it would not have happened. It monopolized the better portion of a year of 1/2 of the Detectives in the Detective Bureau. Once all of the work was done on Gator Roll THAT is when all of the other agencies were called in for the ONE DAY of the big operation which had been organized and produced by SBPD. If Chief Sanchez had not facilitated Gator Roll, it never would have happened ... far from "he had no choice" ... that was a completely innaccurate statement. Why not more Gator Rolls? One word - staffing. Gator Roll, while it dramatically reduced the intensity of gang crimes (for now), it absorbed so many officer resources it is, or would be, very difficult to produce again. In the last 9 years the City has reduced the Department staffing by 27 positions but increased all other City Departments by, a total of, 69 positions. The City, in this current budget crisis, has reduced the Department several more civilian positions. The City can't continually hit the Department with staffing cuts and expect more Gator Rolls. It isn't possible. Chief Sanchez does not hold the purse strings thus he can't affect staffing ... he just keeps having his personnel taken away by the City.
Bustin' Chops : 6/21/2009
"What Crap" sounds like he or she didn't have what it takes to be a cop and verbalizes this failure by "blah blah blah"ing on this post. Of course most people don't like the cops but they sure rely on them when they are immediately affected by a crime. Don't spew your crap on "knock off cops". Each and every cop does a job that most could never handle nor could do any better. Imagine putting your life on the line for perfect strangers day in and day out. Most people wouldn't dream about it and therefore should pay homage to the cops who unselfishly deal with crap talkers like you. However, you were are right about one thing, Marti Blum is a liberal and doesn't like the cops herself. She cringes at any type of law enforcement or fire department functions and shies away like a liberal coward. The city has plenty money on reserve and the city should not cut back on schools or public safety. Maybe take away the all freebies the illegals get that take away from us tax paying, legitimate Americans and that would line all of our pockets with the money we need for everyday living. In a nutshell, don't bust the chops of cops who protect your dumb ass whilst you sleep soundly in your bed each night. Turn your attention to how much money is taken from all our pockets for illegal immigrants that refuse to go through the process to become legal. By the way "suspicious" you probably think your home is bugged by the KGB too and someone is Watergating your personal computer files while you sleep.
