PROFILE: Justin Tevis loves 'Small Town Santa Barbara'

By JOSHUA MOLINA — Oct. 13, 2009

When Justin Tevis recently met with the Santa Barbara Police Officers Association to seek the union’s endorsement, he thought the meeting would be about ways to solve the city’s crime and gang violence problems.

Instead, he was immediately handed a document with a pay scale showing how much Santa Barbara police officers made in comparison to similar-sized cities.

He was stunned.

In fact, reforming public employee salaries and pensions is among the top things on Tevis’ list of reforms if elected to the Santa Barbara City Council.

“These are huge lobbying groups,” Tevis said. “These are huge power groups.”

Tevis is competing against 12 other candidates in the race for three open seats on the Santa Barbara City Council. A fourth seat could open up if Helene Schneider or Dale Francisco is elected mayor.

With the city of Santa Barbara facing serious budget problems, many of the mayoral and city council candidates are trumpeting the easy and convenient sound of “fiscal responsibility.”

But for 26-year-old Tevis, fiscal conservatism, personal responsibility and a return to back-to-basics government, isn’t a facade or an opportunistic campaign strategy.

It’s who he is and how he has always lived his life.

“You work hard for what you get,” Tevis told the Daily Sound. “You have to compete. Wealth is achieved through hard work and dedication.”

A conservative Republican who grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley, Tevis’ campaign has picked up momentum in recent weeks with on-the-street buzz and some key endorsements, including the Santa Barbara County Republican Party.

He recently purchased a television ad, and has a team of grassroots volunteers boosting his campaign.

Tevis, inventory manager at The Territory Ahead, wants to restore fiscal responsibility, if elected. It’s clear that when he speaks, he’s not recalling talking points. He believes that he can make a difference for the better.

“We’re kind of seeing our American values in jeopardy,” Tevis said. “Everyone is looking for someone else to help them.”

Tevis would like to see government operate more like the private sector, where cutting costs is difficult, but an absolute imperative. He said last year employees at The Territory Ahead were let go after working as many as 15 years for the company – and right before Christmas. Yet, in government, employees were getting raises and services were being cut.

“People are hurting in the private sector,” Tevis said.

Tevis has a lot of strong values, and much of that comes from his upbringing.

He said he grew up in a broken home, the son of divorced parents. His family didn’t have a lot of money and he had few role models.

“I should be the last person who is conservative,” Tevis said. “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I didn’t grow up in a wealthy family. To get where I am has been a huge struggle.”

Lacking a lot of guidance, he threw himself into sports. He started wrestling as a child, and later played football in high school and college.

Tevis, who speaks English and Spanish, earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and history at Claremont McKenna College, where he was the 2004 Team Defensive MVP.

The muscular, athletically built Tevis is also trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a form of mixed martial arts. Earlier this year, during the heat of the campaign, he won a high-profile tournament.

“Sports have always been an inspiration,” Tevis said. “It’s a big part of my life.”

With three weeks to go in the campaign, Tevis believes he has a good shot at victory. As an athlete, he believes there’s always a way to win the game.

“I never would have done it if I didn’t think I was going to win it,” he said.

In addition to fiscal responsibility, Tevis said he wants to restore, “Small Town Santa Barbara.”

What that means, he said, is stopping unnecessary high-density, subsidized housing projects.

“We need to live within our means,” he said. “Don’t hand out subsidized housing. People should work hard and realize it’s a privilege to live here.”

He also wants to refocus police resources so officers can focus on the gang problem, rather than writing tickets for parking offenses.

“The police constantly have to generate revenue to make up for the council’s fiscal irresponsibility,” Tevis said.

Despite his strong opinions, Tevis wants people to know that he’s not some hard-line conservative who lacks compassion. He just believes people can be successful without government’s help.

“Yeah, you can get down and out, but if you work hard, you can pull yourself up,” Tevis said. “

Tevis’ supporters feel strongly about his campaign.

“He is a very smart young man, and he gets me fired up about America,” said Karen Jones, the mother of one of Tevis’ friends. “The smart money may not be on Justin Tevis, but I bet on Justin Tevis. I know him. He’s a winner.”

What Justin Tevis doesn't want Santa Barbara to know : 10/13/2009

"Tevis would like to see government operate more like the private sector." I wonder if he means that he would like government to run more like SYNCON HOMES, a corrupt and dishonest home developer that trained Justin Tevis to become the cold and shallow individual you see today. Tevis helped to push homes that were not up to code onto hard working Americans. Read for yourself, "A class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of a group of North Douglas County residents regarding the construction problems. Class members claimed their homes had water draining issues that lead to unwanted back yard ponds, deteriorating garage stem walls, crawlspace flooding and moldy walls. Syncon has agreed to pay $7 million, to the homeowners involved in the suit." Justin Tevis is well aware of this class action lawsuit, and he even left the state of Nevada, right before the lawsuit was settled in 2006, and more recently SYNCON HOMES was sued by Bank of America for 75,000,000 dollars! Next time you look at Justin Tevis' credentials ask yourself this question; Why he has not been at a job for longer than two years? What are you running from Tevis? What bridges have you burned? Justin Tevis is bad for Santa Barbara. Do not trust him! He is a two face liar! http://www.asynconhome.info/

Ayn Rand-- Screw The People and Worship the Market!

That's funny : 10/13/2009

I like how Tevis tries to stir the pot about Randall Van Wolfswinkel , when it is obvious that Tevis was the bad guy all along. How can anyone trust him on Measure B when he once worked for a big developer.

Leave Santa Barbara!

Justin has them running scared : 10/13/2009

SYNCON HOMES? What did this poster do...hire a private detective to dig up dirt on Tevis? Does this mean the big money candidates think Tevis might win? Right out of college he worked for a home builder who was later sued? That is his skeleton in the closet? Wow! This should make folks feel even better about voting for this 26 year old independent thinker. The cheap shots in sports always happen when a team knows they are going to lose...I wonder which campaign thinks they are going to lose and is planting these stories?

Highrise condos in Santa Barbara? : 10/13/2009

Justin Tevis cannot be trusted with Measure B. He is linked to big developers like Syncon. Does Syncon want to build highrise condos in Santa Barbara? Is this the real reason Justin Tevis wants to run for city council, so he can hand it over to developers?

Worried about Our Future

who is this guy? : 10/13/2009

On what grounds do you base these outlandish statements? Do you even know Tevis? How can you even assume that he was "well aware" of the circumstances and that he was "running away" from the lawsuit? That is the most childish argument I've ever heard and quite the conspiracy theory. It was his first job out of college in Nevada-- not the greatest place to live. Who wouldn't want to get back to the central coast? And only been at a job for two years? He's 26! Not to mention it sounds like politics may be his niche (he sure loves the subject-- double majored in History and International Relations at one of the most selective campuses in the country). The funny thing is who cares anyways? I don't see any DUIs or special interest ties like the other candidates. Sounds like some people are getting scared of Tevis' high rise in this competition and the fact that he's about to take one of the seats on the council. I agree with your theory Sports Fan! --the scared ones can keep on running right out of here.

Old School American

Same, Scared Candidate : 10/13/2009

This is obviously the same scared candidate posting all of these.... just a thought: 1- Tevis is OPPOSED to building heights. 2- "Highrise condos"-- he does not even work for Syncon anymore and hates big developers and special interest groups. 3- His entire campaign is run based on "Keeping Small Town Santa Barbara". 4- Justin actually cares about this city. Wow! Imagine that. This argument makes no sense at all, and I think it is a great indicator of Tevis' success in this race. Cheers Justin!

correction : 10/13/2009

Just to clarify-- I meant to say OPPOSED referring to HIGH-RISE development. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

TEVIS = TRUE SMALL TOWN SANTA BARBARA : 10/13/2009

TEVIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST SUPPORTERS OF MEASURE B! THE WHOLE PREMISE OF HIS CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN PRESERVING SMALL TOWN SANTA BARBARA AND HE IS THE LONE CANDIDATE WHO HAS SINCERE PASSION AND CONVICTION ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

BUZZ OF THE VOTERS

Here we go : 10/13/2009

If you don['t like what a candidate stands for, instead of debating his policies, simply use the tried and true tactic of associating them with some scandal and perform the usual character assassination. Attack the messenger instead of the message. Its getting predictable and old.

The Neo-Coms have arrived : 10/13/2009

"Screw The People and Worship the Market!" Who would interpret Ayn Rand like this other than a communist? "Justin Tevis cannot be trusted with Measure B." That in itself shows the stupidity and desperateness of the poster, since measure B is not put in his "trust" as a councilman. Unless I am stupid, my understanding was that it is up to the voters.

Yeah, so? : 10/13/2009

Umm... so was Justin like the head honcho of Syncom homes or something, was personally responsible for their actions? Wow! That's quite an achievement for such a young man! He gets my vote for sure!

Look at Justin's own website for poof : 10/13/2009

On his website Justin informs voters that he was one of first emloyees to come under the company's management program, and that he was intorduced into all aspects of the company. I find it very hard to believe that he never knew home owners were unhappy with theirs homes. If he claims that this is the first time he has ever heard of the class action lawsuit, than I would never believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Do not vote for Justin Tevis. He is bad for Santa Barbara. He has worked for a developer and proudly lists this disgusting company on his campaign website.

Say no to developers

Good article : 10/13/2009

Justin sounds like a sincere candidate who is running for the right reasons, because he is passionate about the downward trend that government has taken because of self promoting politicians with agendas, and has stepped up to serve. That is admirable and I wish him the best luck. But I do take issue with propagating the myth that conservatives were "born with a silver spoon in their mouths". Many of us are converts who realized the Democrats will promise everything and deliver nothing and pimp themselves out to every group for a vote. Being conservative is not about being wealthy, greedy, selfish and incompassionate which is the myth the liberals want you to believe- the opposite is true. We believe in personal responsibility, self dependence and freedom from government, which our country was founded on and which is the most compassionate thing possible. We want freedom, opportunity and prosperity for everyone, not just a select few, and that will never happen without freedom from government tyranny. Justin knows this. I think his words would have been better stated "I am the last person you would think would be a conservative".

Realist

Give it up : 10/13/2009

Let's see a real link to an actual developer that actually wants to develop something in Santa Barbara, is putting money into Justin's back pocket ( I hear his warchest is empty and he never had much more than $10,000 in it) and maybe you have some credibility. Until then you are very transparent, and you're insulting people's intelligence trying to create a "scandal" whoever you are. Are we going to call this Sycongate I suppose? You Dems should have stayed back in your glory days of impeaching Nixon. That was when you were the happiest, and you have been trying to reinvent the experience ever since. Just go shave off your gray ponytails and die.

Losers hate winners : 10/13/2009

'nuf said. Kinda explains what the Democratic party is composed of.

Relcating the homeless : 10/13/2009

So is Justin Tevis going to relocate Santa Barbara's homeless to Nevada and have Syncon build them a shelter using local tax dollars?

Activist for the homeless

People Trying to Undercut a Legitimate Contender : 10/13/2009

These pathetic attempts at smears are so obviously the competition. Tevis has always been very open about his background, and saying that every job he had was to acquire the experience and ability to move back to Santa Barbara. I find it admirable that he worked his way to come back instead of feeling entitled.

Annoyed with all the Negativity

Oh please : 10/13/2009

Syncon, Halliburton, Enron... there always has to be a demon corporation and some politician associated with it, doesn't there? Take Justin at face value - he's just a young man that rents an apartment and cares about the City and the country. That's about as deep as it goes, there is nothing insidious and sinister going on here. If a developer wanted help building substandard housing, I think there are better targets than Santa Barbara and more powerful people than Justin. The real issue here is that Justin is not a Marxist, and the Marxists know it.

Dear Realist : 10/13/2009

As a member of Team Tevis, I know he is against the stigmas that some people try to associate with being conservative. I think his statement was to try and disspell the myths that the Left tries to propagate that all conservatives are rich. He obviously does not feel that anyone should be stereotyped, but he was taking the Left head on in his statement about the silver spoon. He knows that's not true, but the Left does in fact try to promote that nonsense.

Defensive Line "War in the Trenches" - Team Tevis

I Wish this Race was Clean : 10/13/2009

Good luck Justin. You are a brave man taking on all this hatred and bigotry displayed by your opponents. If they dislike you so much, maybe they should just challenge your jiu jitsu.

Mrs. Jones

SBPOA : 10/13/2009

It was a surprise to me also - that the Police Officer's Association isn't about fighting crime and violence as you might assume. It also has nothing to do with the viewpoints of the individual officers on the street, of which candidate would best help SB with it's crime problem, and make their jobs easier. It is about who will promise the most pay raises and benefits. When I found that they endorsed Das Williams, Iya Falcone, and now Helene Schneider on whose watch crime, drug and gang activity has escalated like never before, I became suspicious and decided not to give them money any more. Sounds like payback to me.

Justin can't be bought and someone doesn't like it : 10/13/2009

Interesting how Justin speaks out against union salaries, and would like to see government run jobs more in line with the private sector, and presto, out comes trash on Justin. Interesting also the state of California has more than doubled government jobs in the last ten years, but have the people of California received more services, better services, or is the state in complete ruin? Unions and city government employees might be afraid that Justin might actually be effective and he cant be bought.

Thank you Team Tevis : 10/13/2009

I suspected that to be the case about Justin - the article just was not clear about the tone or context in which they quoted him, or perhaps he mis-spoke. I know what he MEANT, because conservatives are all about taking responsibility for yourselves and pulling yourself up, despite your obstacles and handicaps, (no silver spoon) and this is one of the few countries in which that is still possible. Justin is a great example and role model for that. Liberals would have you beleive that the only way to get wealthy and be successful is to cheat and take money from others. And if you do you are selfish and greedy. Thanks for clearing that up.

Realist

Straight Shooter : 10/13/2009

I like this guy. He is clear thinking and we need more conservative voices on the Council. It is way too left for my likes. And if it is true that Francisco is pulling out of the Mayor's race, then we should really try to get Tevis elected. What a powerhouse. Francisco, Hotchkis and Tevis on the right and the others on the left. There will finally be balance.

Tried and True, Red Blooded American

I know Justin Tevis : 10/13/2009

I have worked closely with him for more than a year now and actually know who he is and what he is like. I can tell you that he is a very selfless and compassionate young man and truly focuses on what really needs to be done for the good of us hard working citizens. I agree with his ideas and trust that he will follow through with them!

Justin Tevis is a Great Young Man : 10/13/2009

Justin Tevis walked in the rain on his lunch break because he knows meeting people is the easiest way to win over voters. Once you meet Justin you get a sense of what a smart, thoughtful young man he is. I am so proud of him for putting himself up for the sort of scorn that happens whenever good people run for office and stand up to the corrupt status quo. And I love the way people are going after Justin...you go after the guy who has the ball. I like where Justin is right now. Definitely within striking distance.

Slow down here : 10/13/2009

First off Santa Barbara in my honest opinion is in some real trouble due to several reasons. First yes it is a privilege to live here, but at the same time this is not utopia either. Santa Barbara has to remember that with out reasonable housing and services we will be with out plumbers, police officers, the person that serves your coffee at Starbucks, your children's teachers above all a massive amount of taxes that help this utopia stay afloat. If he did work for this Syncon Homes then he needs to come forward and explain what he did and provide paper work that can back up those claims. Some of Santa Barbara's biggest issues are stupid things like this Measure B So where going from 60 feet to 40 feet? Whats the point in wasting tax payers money on this type of measure when er have much bigger issues. Is Justin in bed with this fellow Randall Van Wolfswinkel seems most of the republican candidates in town are and so is the measure b folks. Neither of these alliances speak well for the young man. I remember voting for a man named Michael Huffington, hmmm no more BS give it to us straight with out the sugar and the grease I will never ever just blindly support a candidate with out a record to go off of again. it seems everyone wants the people to work harder and harder to make it. This is honestly a good idea but so many honest hardworking Americans are not making it that is basically hot air any more. How do we as a nation and as a local area help these people our neighbors for gods sake.

JohnE

Need to hear from Justin... : 10/13/2009

I am not sure if this is Josh Molina's words or Justin's "...Yet, in government, employees were getting raises and services were being cut." but the way it was written I assume the latter. So I must say... HEY JUSTIN YOU BONEHEAD, get your facts straight on City raises!" I am a City employee, and like others i work with, ALL recieved pay cuts! Do you want to see my paycheck to prove it? I am sorry if I don't work at Territory Ahead with you, but we have budget program cuts too! I too share the problems of this economy. I received lowered pay thanks to our current council, struggle with rents that don't budge despite the housing market crash, higher health care costs, and get all the increased taxes you listed in your speech video on your web site (.25% across the board income tax increase, .5% DMV car registration increase, so my 3% paycut should be very large by your percentage impacts) Good Luck Tevis. I like your youthful drive to buck the system!! Can you at least fact check the other candidates, Justin is not the only one that needs some eductaion on the issues.

Rick

A right time to Run?? : 10/14/2009

Justin Tevis sounds like a good candidate for the a seat but doesnt seem to have the right knowledge about the city so much.I mean he has a lot of solutions for Santa Barbara but i dont think this was his best time to run this election. Hes a young man that show he really wants to help and solves SB problems but i suggest that maybe it wasnt a good time for him to run.

SB resident

So, JohnE : 10/14/2009

What is your answer? How are you going to create "reasonable housing and services"? Someone has to pay the bill for that and the taxpayer can't afford to subsidize everybody that feels they have a right to live here anymore, because he is working too hard to pay for his own damn UNreasonable housing and services. The simple fact is and should be, if you can't afford to live here, don't! It just plain simply COSTS more to live in "paradise". It isn't for everyone, unless they want to work hard and make sacrifices because it is worth it to them to live in paradise. But don't make them work twice as hard because everybody ELSE wants to live here too!.

I don't want to hear the argument anymore.... : 10/14/2009

That if we don't subsidize housing, create artificially inflated "living wages" etc. that suddenly we will be without services. Plumbers and the like simply adjust their rates up so they can afford to live here - if they all were "forced" out of town by high cost of living, then the demand for them goes up along with the price they can charge. So what is the problem? Its simply survival of the fittest and the best. If we can't attract police firefighters etc, we simply have to pay them more. Then it goes to them directly instead of building public housing which only the non-working will be "qualified" for. Simple market economics. Working service people are not going to simply vanish. Maybe the non-producers and contributors will disappear instead! A win win.

Someone ought to change Justin's poo poo pants : 10/14/2009

If you still feel uncomfortable casting your vote for an unlettered upstart whose candidacy resembles a run for high school president more than the highest elected official of a city, take umbrage in the pedigree of the only person willing to back Tevis for this article on the record: his friend's fricking mom. To wit: “'He is a very smart young man, and he gets me fired up about America,” said Karen Jones, the mother of one of Tevis’ friends.'" I assume this interview was conducted whilst Karen Jones was taking a break from serving her child and Tevis cookies and milk. But no matter - it''s just one ridiculous quote from a ridiculous piece about a ridiculous, albeit big-headed, youngster running for a very important local office. No serious person with a basic understanding of economics, civics, and politics can take Justin Tevis seriously for even a brief moment.

Worker Bee

worker bee hasn't worked a day in their life : 10/14/2009

Worker bee...do you have an inferiority complex or something? If anyone needs to grow up, I think it is the one with the vulgar, immature insults at a great candidate for City Council who in fact does have the education and background to lead our City to real change.

SB Woman with a REAL Job

My Ballot is in : 10/15/2009

Chalk another one up for Tevis.

Arriba la Mesa!!!

Better than the average candidate : 10/17/2009

If I could vote he'd get my vote, at least he's honest and willing to learn. Far more than can be said for virtually all the other candidates save Cruzito Herrera Cruz. It's amazing what comes out of the woodwork in Santa Barbara - just read the posts - a bunch of squirrels battling over 2 acorns. I didn't realize that LPNF had trools but it sure seems like it here. Why don't you people go back to whatever it is that you were doing before?
