Victor Maccharoli- EMTs, nurses, and physicians who make up the county's Medical Reserve Corps were able to fill up backpacks yesterday with supplies donated by Direct Relief International.
Responding quickly and efficiently to an emergency situation will be easier for members of Santa Barbara County’s Medical Reserve Corps after they received customized backpacks stuffed with medical supplies and equipment from locally based Direct Relief International.
The medical aid organization donated 90 packs that contain a variety of common emergency supplies, from diagnostic equipment and trauma care items to flashlights, tools and duct tape. The backpacks are being filled this week and will be distributed to members of the corps next week.
“With these packs distributed among our medical volunteers, we will have a very well prepared MRC unit, ready to respond, all thanks to Direct Relief,” Nancy Lapolla, the county’s director of emergency medical services, said in a prepared statement.
Formed just three years ago, the Medical Reserve Corps is a volunteer group of local medical and health professionals, ranging from doctors, nurses and paramedics to veterinarians, dentists, social workers, pharmacists and others willing to serve during medical emergencies.
Membership currently stands at 110 volunteers. Those seeking more information about the corps or how to become a member should visit www.sbc.org/ems/mrc or call 681-4759.
