Fire-damaged trails reopen after restoration

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Nov. 6, 2009

A handful of trails in Santa Barbara’s frontcountry that sustained major damage during the Jesusita fire are reopening today after lengthy restoration efforts.

Rattlesnake Trail and Jesusita Trail from San Roque Road to Inspiration Point are being reopened to the public following restoration work by a team of experts. The remaining section of the Jesusita Trail, along with Tunnel Trail and Tunnel Connector remain closed to protect areas coated with hydromulch.

“Trail users are reminded to always exercise caution and consideration,” forest officials said in a news release. “Trails in the burn area remain subject to erosion and periodic rock debris, and will present unsafe conditions during wet weather. Remaining on the designated trails will reduce the potential for damage and additional erosion.”

A trail restoration team consisting of California Conservation Corps members, the Los Padres Hotshot Crew and the Santa Ynez Helitack Crew worked for nearly three weeks to repair trails in the burn area.

Officials praised special training provided by Garrett Villanueva, a U.S. Forest Service trails engineer and expert in sustainable trail construction and maintenance, for his involvement in the restoration effort. Trail work was funded by the U.S. Forest Service.

Authorities said they plan to monitor trails throughout the winter season and will notify the public of any future closures or changes.

“Additional trail work to address restoration needs may be needed after rain events,” according to the news release. “Trails may be closed in the future if wet weather presents significant concerns about trail safety.
