Teenager suspected in computer threats

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Nov. 10, 2009

Authorities have arrested a local teenager on suspicion of masterminding a series of computer-generated threats and false emergencies reported to law enforcement agencies on the Central Coast.

Detectives in the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department’s high-tech crimes unit tracked down the teenager, who had apparently sent in multiple threats to agencies in Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties.

“Many of the incidents involved bomb threats reported to emergency dispatch centers,” Sheriff’s Spokesman Drew Sugars said. “Another false report led to the deployment of a law enforcement helicopter at taxpayer defense.”

Authorities took the teenage suspect, a resident of Santa Barbara County, into custody on Friday and booked him into juvenile hall on several felony and misdemeanor charges. Sugars said no further information could be released due to the age of the suspect.
