A previously deteriorated and leaking Hilltop Fountain at the Santa Barbara Zoo has been restored and updated after the Garden Club of Santa Barbara donated funds to cover the repair and redesign costs.
Local landscape designer Alida Aldrich oversaw the restoration project and celebrated with zoo and Garden Club officials during an unveiling reception yesterday.
“The Hilltop Fountain has been a fixture at the zoo since its creation in the 1960s,” Zoo Director Nancy McToldridge said in a news release. “At that time, the Garden Club was responsible for its installation. We are so thrilled to have their support once again to upgrade this attract, which has a key zoo location.”
The revamped fountain features a steelhead trout sculpture provided by the zoo, along with new flagstone and landscaping around the koi pond. In recognition of the club’s generosity, the fountain has been renamed the Santa Barbara Garden Club Fountain.
“My goal was to preserve the shape and structure of the fountain, but breathe a fresh look into the rest,” Aldrich said in the news release, adding, “The zoo now has an inviting, child-friendly water feature to greet children and families on the hilltop.”
