Police blotter — November 17

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Nov. 17, 2009

Nov. 9, 7:55 a.m. — Police officers looking into reports of a stolen bank card obtained security footage from a liquor store where the card had been used. Store employees recognized the suspect as a frequent customer who had applied for a job recently.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, had reported her wallet stolen while riding the bus on September 8. Among the items in the wallet was her ATM card with her personal identification number written on a piece of paper. The card was used that same day at locations mainly along Milpas Street, including Crown Liquor, where officers reviewed security footage.

Having obtained the suspect’s name and address from his job application form at the liquor store, police found the 38-year-old man and took him into custody for burglary, fraudulent use of an ATM card and violating his parole.

Nov. 9, noon — Reports of a prowler brought police to the 1200 block of Cacique Street, where they found a man sitting on the suspected prowler to prevent him from fleeing. Officers learned the victim’s aunt had witnessed a break-in at the victim’s home, called him at his job and then called police. The victim returned home with a coworker and spotted the suspect walking away wearing his designer jeans and two of his shirts.

After tackling the suspect, the victim held him down until officers arrived. Authorities determined the suspect had entered the residence through a side window. The 23-year-old admitted to stealing clothing from the same home a few months earlier as well. He was booked on two counts of residential burglary.

Nov. 11, 10:05 p.m. — An officer spotted three men standing in the parking lot of a closed business in the 200 block of Helena Street and approached to investigate further. Police determined one man, a 40-year-old, was on parole and subject to search terms.

Officers found a crack pipe in the suspect’s backpack and a bindle of meth in his wallet. The man also had a bicycle stashed away in the bushes that was later determined to be stolen during a local residential burglary in August 2008.

Police booked the 40-year-old for possession of stolen property, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of narcotics and violating his parole.

Nov. 11, 10:45 p.m. — Reports of a disturbance brought authorities to an apartment in the 400 block of Old Coast Highway, where they separated a couple that had been fighting. Officers determined a 31-year-old man had assaulted his live-in girlfriend of four months.

The suspect grabbed the victim, ripping her shirt and bra, and pushed her onto the bed and then to the floor. He held her down and spit on her 10 to 15 times before slapping her face with an open hand. Police noted the victim had injuries to her jaw, wrists, neck and lower back. Authorities booked the suspect into jail for domestic battery.

Nov. 12, 10:20 a.m. — Reports of suspicious circumstances brought authorities to the Brooks Institute, 801 Alston Rd., where employees explained they had discovered a room had been fitted with a deadbolt that did not belong to the school. After forcing their way into the room a week earlier, employees discovered evidence that someone was living there, including clothing, hygiene products and other items.

On the day that school employees called police, they had found another normally unlocked room that was secured from the inside with a deadbolt. Employees heard noises from inside, but nobody would answer or open the door.

Officers forced their way in and discovered a 40-year-old man inside. The suspect admitted he had been living at the school for three weeks. Authorities booked him for vandalism and trespassing.

Nov. 12, 3 p.m. — Detectives took a 37-year-old man into custody after his employer discovered two checks missing from the suspect’s workplace, a restaurant on De la Vina Street. Authorities had little trouble tracing the checks to the suspect’s personal bank account.

The two checks had been forged and cashed for a total of $575. The suspect gave conflicting accounts about how he obtained the checks. Police booked him for two counts of forgery, burglary, conspiracy and grand theft.

Nov. 13, 10:42 p.m. — Security at Velvet Jones, 423 State St., called police after a woman attempted to get into the bar with another person’s identification. The 20-year-old Isla Vista resident admitted trying to get into the over-21 establishment with false identification.

She denied having any identification of her own, but police found her true ID in her purse. The 20-year-old proceeded to state that she hates police officers, calling them “f—ing pigs.” She pulled her arms away as authorities attempted to take her into custody.

After continuing to struggle as she was taken to the squad car, the suspect started kicking the partition in the police vehicle. Officers booked her for unlawful use of another person’s identification and attempting to use fraudulent identification to acquire alcohol.

Nov. 13, 4:45 p.m. — Police learned that a woman who had attempted to pass several counterfeit bills at a local store several days prior had been arrested earlier this year for using fake money in other nearby towns.

Officers had responded to Rite Aid, 35 S. Milpas St., after a 31-year-old woman attempted to use three fake $20 bills to purchase merchandise. The clerk suspected the bills were fake and confirmed her suspicions with a counterfeit detection pen.

After being told the bills were counterfeit and would not be accepted, the suspect left the store and gave one of the bills to another woman, a 34-year-old who entered the store and tried to use the bill again.

Officers detained both women but ultimately released them. On November 13, a U.S. Secret Service special agent informed local authorities that the 31-year-old suspect had been arrested in January for passing fake $20 bills in Goleta and Ventura.

Officers found both women inside a home in the 900 block of E. Ortega Street. Authorities booked the 31-year-old for intentionally passing counterfeit bills. Police also suspected the 34-year-old suspect of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

The suspect agreed to provide a urine sample, which tested positive for meth. She admitted to taking three “hits” a few days prior. Police booked her for being under the influence of narcotics and violating her probation.

Nov. 14, 10:01 a.m. — Police received reports of people taking materials from a Caltrans site near the intersection of Sycamore Canyon and Ranchito Vista roads and arrived in the area to investigate. They quickly spotted a man riding a bicycle in the area and stopped him.

The 51-year-old man spoke little English but said he worked for a trash company in the area. Police determined he had a history of drug use and found a small amount of meth and cocaine in his possession. Authorities booked him on two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Nov. 15, 3:20 a.m. — Officers responded to the Holiday Inn, 17 W. Haley St., after employees asked for their help evicting an occupant. Police accompanied the hotel manager to the room in question and tried to get the sole occupant, a 30-year-old man, to leave.

The suspect refused and called 911 multiple times, reporting that three women were in his room claiming to be police officers. He began to struggle as police tried to search him and kept asking if an officer wanted to see his “bunny.”

The 30-year-old continued to refuse to comply with orders as he was taken to a police car. Authorities ultimately booked him for trespassing and resisting arrest.

Nov. 15, 12:20 p.m. — An assault investigation brought officers to Plaza del Mar Park, where they discovered the incident had started the night prior. A 24-year-old man was caught stealing a bottle of whisky from the backpack of a woman and was subsequently attacked by several men in the area.

The 24-year-old left the area without his possessions and returned the following day to retrieve his belongings. When the man asked other people in the park where his items were, nobody gave him any information. The 24-year-old became angry and attacked three men, kicking and punching each of them.

Authorities took the suspect into custody for assault with a deadly weapon after determining he had kicked the victims — who all appeared to be intoxicated — with his boots. One victim received treatment at the hospital while the other two men declined medical attention.

Nov. 13 and 15 — During two sobriety and driver’s license checkpoints, Santa Barbara police screened 753 vehicles, arrested six people on suspicion of driving under the influence, and discovered 15 people driving without a valid license. Authorities also issued two traffic citations, made one felony arrest and made two misdemeanor arrests.

forget checkpoints ... : 11/17/2009

... if the cops could just randomly conduct warrantless searches of any home they wanted, they'd probably find at least that same 1 in a hundred ratio of felonies occurring. They could really crack down on the drug dealers and gun runners. I think starting random home searches should be a top priority, since those with nothing to hide shouldn't mind at all and we obviously shouldn't let any criminal who gets busted complain.

don't think they don't want to

Traffic laws? Who needs 'em! : 11/17/2009

If DUI checkpoints are illegitimate -- which is your implication -- what's your suggestion for an effective way of dealing with DUI? (Actually, judging by the Blotter, the most effective all-around crimefighting method would be to just follow parolees all day!)

"The Graven" : 11/18/2009

To all posters: Just ingnore Graven. He is a crusty person with no ideas and no life. His life consists of nothing more than firing off the same rants again and again in an attempt to feel important to himself. If we all just ignore him, his true non-relevancy will show, although I doubt he will actually go away because, again, he has no other life.

Dose of Reality here... : 11/19/2009

The issue of illegal immigration is a real one, whether you would like to believe it or not. The biggest issue is (hold on people) ...our Consitution; it needs a tweeking. That there is a provision that if you are "born" here in the U.S., you have full citizenship and all the rights entitled... That is just wrong and outdated. There is NO country in the world that has such an insane policy! Unfortunately,on our southern border is a THIRD world CORRUPT country filled with a huge uneducated population that doesn't believe in BIRTH CONTROL, especially, if they are rewarded by having babies if on this side of the border... Meanwhile, our schools , hospitals and social programs (which are tax payer funded) are full of Mexican and Central American nationals taking advantage of our crazy system. Who can blame these peasents from coming up here and having a better life? Unfortunately, for most of these illegals, education is NOT a priority for there offspring. The gangsta lifestyle is encouraged and supported in their culture. So we pay for all this by a diminished quality of life here in California. Our roads are crap, LA is over crowded, schools have low scoring students and high dropout rates, we have no money for state parks, roads and other infrastructure...Why? 'cause we are subsidizing Mexican nationals and others that give a limited if anything back into the system....Welcome to California- the once Golden State!

Reality : 11/19/2009

The Consitution is not going to change any time soon, but a guest worker program might be the answer.

Racists and their excuses... : 11/19/2009

" Meanwhile, our schools , hospitals and social programs (which are tax payer funded)" my racist friend if you didn't know illegal immigrants pay taxes, they use fake or somebody elses SS#s to work or they use tax id#s, when illegal immigrants buy any product or service here they also pay taxes... "The gangsta lifestyle is encouraged and supported in their culture" my racist friend, if you didn't know every single country have this social problem and is a result of racism/oppression, BLACKS here in America started this "gangsta lifestyle" you know why? These racist pigs love to have enemies all over the world but WE Mexican Americans don't, we welcome this new wave of immigrants legals or illegals they are human beings and if they want to live in my country they are welcome, you just keep making excuses after excuses and we Mexican Americans are paying close attention to your racist behavior and we don't like that.

Andy G. : 11/19/2009

I fail to see anything except that person stating facts with regard to our immigration policy. Your stance that illegals pay taxes is weak at best! They drain our social services 100 fold more than they put back. There are many examples, but I have a personal one I can share... Just bought a new Volvo wagen last year. It was of course insured as are all my vehicles. Driving down Milpas and get broadsided by an illegal going through a red light, driving without a license and no insurance. The car he was driving was not registered either. My insurance company is stuck paying for damages... (which in turn is paid for by EVERYONES insurance rates going up).Fortunately, I wasn't hurt. The illegal complains of neck pain. He goes to Cottage in an Ambulance and gets treated. I know for a FACT that he had a $890.00 ambulance bill and I'm sure that the ER bill was more... Who's paying? You think Jesus had paid into our tax system when he bought his car off his cousin for $500.00? I found out where he was living...In an apartment with at least 10 others... Let's see, you think our sewer system was made to have that kind of impact from a 1 bedroom apartment? It goes on and on... So save your "Racist" labels pal, although I'm sure it makes you feel better! By the way Ceasar Chavez was strongly opposed to ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Payin for illegals everyday

Mexican Americans don't let their people down! : 11/19/2009

Well, that is why we want them to become legal residents so they can get driver licenses and insurances, remember that corrupt CEOs and this UNFAIR WAR almost doom this country to the ground and NOT illegal immigrants, there are over 20M of illegals here and they are not leaving this country, do you want them in prisons or concentration camps as [the graven] so eloquently suggested or we want them here legally so they may participate in our system and contribute? We are spending billions in the middle east and we don't even know what the outcome will be but for sure it doesn't look good, we invaded Iraq/Afganistan to bring justice and freedom to people that we even don't know, why not bring justice and freedom to poor illegal Immigrants who are here escaping social problems? Maybe because illegals don't have oil? We have enemies all over the world thanks to people like you, and now you are treating illegals like crap? Do you also want to create some sort tention between your people and Mexican Americans? We don't like racists, we like people, we used to ignore issues and racists, but now we are learning more about you and your history.

I rather pay for illegals everyday than for an unjust war!

HUH? : 11/19/2009

You say there are 20 Million illegals here; How about we just have an open border and let all the "poor people" of the world into the US...? Why are you such a racist and only allow 20 Million hispanics in the US??? Let's bring in the Muslims from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Chad, etc...? We can be like modern Europe (E.U.) and loose our identity and culture(s) like what has happened in England, France,Sweden, Netherlands et al... Been to Londan lately? How about Malmo, Sweden? You can't even teach small kids about "farm life" anymore because you might mention the word "PIG" which would "offend" muslims... All in the name of Political Corectness and liberal immigration policies... Nice huh? Well, friend, I love visiting Mexico and points south- the culture, food and beaches, BUT I don't want the U.S. to loose it's identity for the sake of helping the poor people around the world and subsidizing them and their 5 childeren... Why do my kids have to pay full tuition fees and illegals get to attend for reduced costs or for free? Why do my kids go to public school and have classrooms filled with kids from illegals who are entitled to attend and inflate classroom sizes? If I took my wife to Mexico being 9 months pregnant, would we have the same entitlements that are offered here (free hospital care and delivery) and a debit card for food? NOT! Go down to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and see the Neonatal clinic... It is filled with illegal alien women ready to give birth to their first, second, or more child. It would be great if we could continue to absorb this influx of illegal aliens from around the world, but we only have limited resources and someone has to pay. Socialism is a great system- until you run out of other people's money! Speaking of OIL and natural resources, Mexico has Billions of barrels of oil and natural gas; too bad the government and Mexican CEO's are to corrupt to build an infrastructure and help educate the illiterate populations in rual Mexico...

A traveler

20M in or out? : 11/19/2009

Who is talking about ONLY Hispanics? 20M of illegals from everywhere live here and they are not going anywhere do we welcome them or torture with their families, what would you do if you feel that your family is been threaten? I have a solution... [if you made it here, your are welcome here!] People pay thousands to get here, people risk their lives to get here dude!!! Why you want to make this people suffer more? As soon they get their documentation straight, they will contribute to the system and more hospitals, schools etc are built, and eveybody is happy! Or should we kick out all those 20M? What would yuo do?

Take off your mask racist : 11/20/2009

"loose our identity and culture(s)"???? WTF???? USA means MANY IDENTITIES, MANY CULTURES, MANY PEOPLE, we are a mix of cultures, Africans, Europeans, Latinos, Asians, tell me how the F! illegal immigrants would change our identity/culture? oh yeah, 10/20 millions of illegals would change the way of living of 310+ millions of Americans you stupid idiot. There should a law that deports all these racists back to Germany, you came here and kill the natives destroy their culture, then you killed mexicans and took over their land and now want to protect this multi-culture society from who? I just don't get it, I recommend you take of your mask and accept you are redneck racist son of a B!

wait a minute : 11/20/2009

Redneck does not necessarily mean racist...often it's just somebody from out in the sticks, or someone that likes the country lifestyle...it has nothing to do with racism! Please do not equate the term "redneck" with this racist idiot!

That's your come back? : 11/20/2009

You can't answer these real issues, so let's just hit the "racist" button. The US "culture" refered to, isn't the melting pot of all cultures around the world that is embaced here as "Americans" . What we will lose is the ability to fund and pay for the things we used to take for granted (great schools, medical care, roads and infrastucture). Why does L.A. Unified have an over 50% High School dropout rate? The point is we can't afford to keep absorbing illegal immigrants without serious consequences that will effect our quality of life.

Amnesty is the solution! : 11/20/2009

That is why we need to legalize them, they get a job and pay taxes, they would have driver licenses and insurances, 20 millions of them and they are not going back, I'm a US citizen, and I don't even know where my taxes are really going, the war? SS? Illegals? CEO's? UFO studies? Let them participate in our system and society.
