Artist seeks help with fire mosaic

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Nov. 19, 2009

Community members are being invited to participate in the creation of a mosaic commemorating survivors and first responders of the recent wildfires on the South Coast by contributing artifacts that have been transformed by the flames.

Suggested items are molten glass, ceramic, metal, stone objects or other hard materials that can be incorporated into thin-set mortar. Fire equipment such as hose nozzles, axes or helmets is also appropriate.

Artist Betsy Gallery is putting together the mosaic after receiving grant funding through the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. Once completed, the artwork will be displayed in the lobby of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department Headquarters, 4410 Cathedral Oaks Rd.

Those interested in donating items or helping with the creation of the mural can attend upcoming workshops at Art from Scrap or La Casa de la Raza to learn about basic mosaic materials and techniques. Workshop details and other information is available by calling 963-2878 or sending an email to bgallery@cox.net.
