Goleta police nab 6 in crosswalk sting

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Nov. 21, 2009

A crosswalk sting held by Goleta police officers on Thursday resulted in six citations for motorists that did not yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Authorities had civilian employees walk across marked crosswalks at two locations in the city while uniformed motorcycle deputies watched for motorists that did not stop. Police officials staged the sting during the lunch hour due to heavier vehicle and pedestrian traffic between noon and 1 p.m.

“Police hope that by conducting and publicizing these operations on a regular basis, motorists will be more attentive and look for pedestrians,” according to a Goleta Police Department news release. “Thankfully, the majority of the motorists observed during this operation properly and safely yielded to the pedestrian in the crosswalk.”

Deputies kept an eye out for motorists breaking two specific laws — the first requiring drivers to yield to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. That violation can result in fines up to $200.

The second law prohibits vehicles from passing another vehicle that has stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the street.

“This offense is especially dangerous because pedestrians are too often lulled into a false sense of security when one vehicle stops for them,” according to the news release. “The fine for this violation is approximately $450.”

Authorities said they plan to conduct additional crosswalk stings in the future without notice.

wowo man

Emergency Vehicles = Everyone Pull Over : 11/21/2009

People don't seem to follow the law of pulling over to the side of the road and stopping when an ambulance or fire truck comes by with sirens, either. Do people not know the law or do lots of people not care?

: 11/22/2009

There have been many times when I have yielded to a pedestrian and the car in the next lane doesn't see them and has nearly hit them. Sometimes, I think I will cause the pedestrian to be hit by allowing them to cross.

Fewer Donuts : 11/22/2009

I'm sure this operation limited the donut time experienced daily by many of our law enforcement officers. What a pathetic waste of time.

Whiners : 11/22/2009

Sarcasm and donut jokes? Get a life you $%*@ing whiners.

Good Job : 11/22/2009

Good job to the police! Pedestrians definitely need a brake. I hope they really go after the thoughtless people who zoom past school kids too. Amen to that false sense of security. Wish many pedestrians would look when walking into crossings; many go without looking.... THAT'S SCARY!

LAAAAAAAAAMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS : 11/23/2009

Lames get a life n stop being in the streets in the first place so you wnt get ran over!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gang problem? : 11/23/2009

What gang problem? We have crosswalk violators to worry about, don't bother us.

I say : 11/23/2009

Issue tickets to the stupid people that walk out in front of cars. While you're at it, issue tickets to those idiots that ride ON the bike lane line instead of IN the bike lane? One drunk or distracted driver and they are roadkill. Of course its the drivers fault.

Fat Pigs : 11/23/2009

Get a real job you pension collectors. Stop bankrupting our country and harassing average citizens with this type of government waste to cover for our elected officials' budget woes. Piss off.

Blame poor intersection design, not the drivers! : 11/23/2009

I got one of these tickets in Santa Barbara in August. The intersection was roped off, but the cop denied that. Also, the cop said he never had any intention of crossing the street during the sting. I though he was a construction worker on the side of the road. They should be putting traffic lights in these problem intersections, not blaming a few drivers to build revenue.
Shame on law enforcement and city planners for knowingly leaving dangerous intersections as they are!

Blame poor intersection design, not the drivers!

Typical : 11/23/2009

Nice job. Forget about gangs, lets go after the real criminals. Goleta sucks.

wonderful work andy griffith! : 11/23/2009

RIDICULOUSness.... i guess our tax dollars are worth it in the end

STING!?!?! : 11/23/2009

Hahaha! They actually had a "sting operation" to catch people not yielding to pedestrians?!? Hilarious. Next thing you know they'll be busting people for not bothering anyone and growing certain plants in their homes... oh, wait.

Way to spend, SB!

Immature Postings : 11/23/2009

The Daily Sound blog here seems to be attracting what sounds like young males with careless, selfish attitudes. What other group doesn't like the police and could possibly think pedestrian safety and drivers who ignore the law concerning pedestrian crossings is a joke? Grow up.

Yay police! : 11/29/2009

I'm glad the police are giving citations! It's not easy for pedestrians to cross Hollister in downtown Goleta or Fairview Ave near the Library. Hardly any cars ever wait for the walkers to finish crossing the street before heading through the crosswalk. Especially on Fairview the cars fly right past people who are trying to cross the street in the cross walk. Yes, funds do need to be used to catch careless drivers who might just kill someone!

Cheering on the Police

Cheering on the police : 12/1/2009

To Cheering on the Police... Why don't you walk your lazy butt a few yards to the intersection where there is a street light? Also, to the other poster who wrongly judges the previous posters as young males with careless attitudes. This is not the issue. It is the absurd idea that a "sting operation" is needed and valuable public resources are allocated for such a thing. Its the poor management of our tax dollars that is the issue. Figure it out.
