Police blotter — December 11

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Dec. 11, 2009

Nov. 29, 5:08 p.m. — A witness called police after spotting a man lighting two pizza boxes on fire near Kids World at Alameda Park. The suspect, a 38-year-old man, lit a box on fire and stuffed it between several trashcans that were overflowing with trash.

He was lighting a second box on fire when a witness intervened. Police detained the suspect nearby in possession of three lighters. The 38-year-old said he didn’t smoke and admitted to lighting the pizza boxes on fire, explaining he planned to cook pigeons.

Authorities booked the suspect into jail for attempted arson.

Dec. 1, 1:20 p.m. — Officers responded to a city parking lot at 1200 Chapala St. after receiving reports of a suspicious man. Upon arrival, police determined a 47-year-old man had locked his keys in his vehicle and was using a coat hanger in an attempt to gain entry.

A records check revealed the man was wanted on a warrant stemming from a DUI arrest. Authorities booked the 47-year-old for the outstanding warrant.

Dec. 2, 9:05 p.m. — An officer stopped a 48-year-old woman after she ran a red light at State Street and Ontare Road at approximately 35 mph. The suspect’s two children were passengers in the car. Further investigation revealed the driver showed symptoms of intoxication and police eventually arrested her on suspicion of DUI.

Dec. 3, 12:10 p.m. — Reports of a possible intoxicated driver brought police to the 1200 block of Punta Gorda Street, where they found a 31-year-old man standing next to his running Ford truck. The man appeared agitated, and was cursing and swinging his arms.

Witnesses reported that the man had been driving around the trailer park, and he frequently drives after drinking. On this occasion, two neighbors blocked the exits with their vehicles to keep the suspect from driving onto public streets.

Authorities booked the 31-year-old for DUI and driving on a suspended license.

Dec. 4, 2:20 a.m. — Police stopped a 39-year-old woman after she drove the wrong way along the 1000 block of Bath Street, forcing other drivers to pull over in order to avoid a collision. The suspect displayed symptoms of being under the influence of prescription medication and was booked for DUI.

Dec. 4, 3:25 p.m. — Dispatchers received a call from a person who witnessed a hit-and-run collision at the Milpas Street offramp and was following the suspect along Cabrillo Boulevard. The suspect had rear-ended a vehicle and fled the scene.

The witness lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle in a residential neighborhood, but officers located a vehicle parked in the 400 block of Rancheria Street with a missing front bumper. Police located the missing bumper in the driveway of a residence in the 500 block of Coronel Street and determined a 24-year-old woman had been behind the wheel of the hit-and-run vehicle.

Authorities booked the suspect for DUI, hit-and-run, driving without insurance and violating her probation from a prior DUI case.

Dec. 7, 2 a.m. — Homeowners in the 100 block of E. Valerio Street called police after seeing a suspicious man on their property. The witness told police his wife alerted him after she heard someone trying to open two locked doors to the rear of their home.

The woman then saw an unknown man enter their garage. Her husband confronted the suspect, a 28-year-old man, in the garage and asked him what he was doing. The suspect replied, “I’m looking for my boys.”

The homeowner told the intruder to leave and he complied. Police stopped the 28-year-old a few blocks away, however, and took him into custody after the witness identified him as the intruder. Authorities booked the suspect for prowling.

Dec. 9, 9 a.m. — Police booked a 19-year-old man already being held in jail for an additional charge after determining that he assaulted his uncle several days prior. On December 2, authorities conducted a probation search of the teenager’s residence in the first block of La Cadena Street.

Officers found a small amount of heroin during the search. Later that day, police spoke with the suspect’s uncle, who reported being assaulted by the 19-year-old. He was bleeding from the face and had lost a tooth.

The uncle told police he was getting out of the shower when his nephew punched him several times in the face, knocking out a front tooth. He said he didn’t know why the teenager attacked him and insisted it had nothing to do with the heroin found during the probation search. Authorities added a charge of battery causing great bodily injury against the 19-year-old.

Why are the trash cans overflowing at Alameda Park? Anyone tried to use the public restrooms there? Horrifying. All the time. Why does the city neglect some places soooooo bad?
