Police blotter — December 16

By DAILY SOUND STAFF — Dec. 16, 2009

Dec. 11, 5:20 p.m. — While investigating a head-on collision in the 700 block of Alston Road, officers determined a GMC Sonoma had crossed the center divider and hit a Kia Sportage. Further investigation revealed the driver of the GMC, a 31-year-old man, had symptoms of intoxication and did not have a driver’s license.

Authorities ultimately booked the suspect for DUI and driving without a license, in addition to a charge of possession of counterfeit documents after officers found a fake social security card in his wallet.

Dec. 12, 7:30 a.m. — Reports of a traffic collision brought officers to the intersection of Calle Real and Hope Avenue, where they discovered a fire hydrant had been hit and snapped off at its base, causing a plume of water to shoot 50 feet into the air.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene, but left behind the front bumper and license plate. Authorities determined the vehicle had exited from northbound Highway 101 at the Hope Avenue offramp, sideswiped a concrete guardrail and clipped a metal street light before continuing down the street and hitting the hydrant.

After dispatchers tracked down the registered owner of the vehicle, police traveled to a home in the 3800 block of La Cumbre Hills Lane, where a trail of automotive fluids led to a closed garage.

Authorities took the resident, a 43-year-old man, into custody for DUI, hit-and-run, driving on a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Dec. 13, 2:30 a.m. — Officers on patrol in the 1200 block of Chino Street spotted a vehicle swerve into a parked SUV, pushing it up onto the curb. Police determined the vehicle had hit two other parked cars on the street before crashing into the SUV.

Authorities booked the 45-year-old woman found behind the wheel for driving under the influence and driving without insurance.

Dec. 13, 11:20 p.m. — Police stopped a 27-year-old man in the 400 block of N. Milpas Street for riding his bicycle without a light. A records check revealed the man was wanted on a warrant stemming from a prior DUI incident.

Officers searched the suspect and found a cigarette box containing 14 plastic bindles — 10 that contained meth and four that contained cocaine. Authorities booked the 27-year-old for the warrant and possession of drugs for sale.

Dec. 14, 6:15 p.m. — A witness called police to report she was following a vehicle that had been involved in a hit-and-run collision at State and Anapamu streets. The caller reported the suspect was traveling along State Street at speeds reaching 50 mph and would not pull over even as she honked her horn and flashed her lights.

The suspect pulled over at State and Mason streets and fled on foot. Police towed the vehicle and located a bag of suspected hashish. Later that evening, at 9:05, the owner of the vehicle, a 45-year-old woman, called to report her car had been stolen.

Further investigation revealed the woman was suspected of being behind the wheel during the hit-and-run incident. Authorities booked her for possession of hashish and plan to pursue charges of hit-and-run.

Love the blotter. : 12/16/2009

I just love reading this police blotter. I always get a chuckle. Nothing makes me happier than to see criminals apprehended.

Drinkers who drive : 12/16/2009

I think that drinking and driving is extremely stupid, irresponsible, and inconsiderate of the welfare and well-being of others. And the same goes for cell phone usage and (especially) texting while driving. People who do these any of these things ought be be punished by having their license suspended, for a first offense, and revoked for a subsequent offense.
Lawmakers ought to get off their rear ends and pass laws to discourage these things.

The Law says 0.08 : 12/16/2009

What did the law makers expect when they made it legal to drive with a 0.08 BAC. Clearly you can drink then drive. Change the law to 0.00. Does anyone other than me find it ironic that alcohol is served at campaign celebrations on election day. Why do bars have parking lots if you're not supposed to drink and drive?

The Law says 0.08 : 12/16/2009

QED - that's a very good point.

I guarantee you the people arrested for DUI in this blotter had a BAC greater than .08.

thats not the only problem : 12/16/2009

quote "I guarantee you the people arrested for DUI in this blotter had a BAC greater than .08."
the real problem is the lack of strict enforcement those who get the DUI will be out and driving with in a few days of release. furthermore @ 0.00 BAC I agree. my opinion if your caught once 90 days jail mandatory, the car is Impounded, with no possibility of getting it back and mandatory 1 year suspended license.

QED : 12/17/2009

I appreciate very much your stance and recognize its point but I don't think that this will keep those people who drive while intoxicated off the road anyway. People who are going to drink excessively then drive are going to do it anyway, regardless of any legal limit. I don't think it is fair to deny responsible people the right to have a beer or glass of wine at dinner then drive home. Of course, as long as they are responsible about their consumption. Anyway, I appreciate your point but I disagree.

Really? : 12/17/2009

Hey Rock of SB, so if someone has 2 drinks ( 12oz beers, 1 oz shots, champagne, whatever) with BAC of ~0.08% and drives they should have their lives ruined by going to jail for 90 days, thus probably losing their job, forfeit their car no matter what they owe one it, and then lose their privelege of driving for 1 year making it hard to commute to get a job. Get a life..... You are just adding to the problem of over crowded jails.

The DUI scourge... : 12/19/2009

It's amazing how the homeless and the mentally disabled get such a bad rap for the crime that happens in our county. Yet take a look for yourself, most of the fools driving around drunk or stoned out of their mind are people parking their wreck car in the garage or calling from home to report their car stolen...(no doubt a crazy homeless guy!) I see it every day, what
a joke!

@ Goleta Guy : 12/20/2009

90 days in jail is nothing compared to trying to replace your son or daughter after a person who had 1 or 2 beers and a glass of wine, runs a stop light plows into the side of your kids vehicle, and kills them on her sweet 16th birthday. I will never forget that night, nor will i ever forgive a drunk driver. but I am human, 90 days if you get caught, if your willing to drink and drive and put others lives in your hands, then you deserve the punishment. the city has a great public transportation system. and you can ride your bike to work and hope and prey some other drunk driver doesn't lodge your bike and your head under his/her bumper.

Rock of SB

: 12/21/2009

this town does NOT have a great public transportation system. if its after 8pm, forget it. you cant rely on the public transportation system to get you home after the bars. and why would the city want to? do you realize how much cash this city pulls in on DUI? thats why the only so called deterrent SB puts in place for drunk drivers is the DUI checkpoint (which is really just a general Gestapo style checkpoint when you get right down to it) and not any kind of comprehensive measures like public buses that run all night. make no mistake the DUI's will continue, and thats exactly what the city of SB wants.

its true
