One man spent Christmas in the hospital and another landed in Santa Barbara County Jail after an altercation ended with a vicious stabbing.
Just after 10 a.m. yesterday, authorities were dispatched to the 100 block of south Soledad St. on reports of a medical emergency. Upon arrival, they found 33-year-old Cesar Ortega suffering from multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen.
Lt. Brent Mandrell, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara Police Department, said Ortega identified the stabber as 36-year-old Sergio Osvaldo Quintana.
Investigators began a search for Quintana and located him driving a few blocks away on Ortega Street.
Mandrell said officers conducted a “high risk” traffic stop and arrested the man.
Mandrell did not know if the stabbing took place at one of the men’s homes, or how, if at all, they knew each other. He said investigators were not considering the stabbing gang related.
“It’s all under investigation,” he said.
Quintana was being held in county jail on suspicions of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Mandrell said Ortega was in stable condition.

That's a terrible Xmas gift to give someone. You'd think with all the Schools, Colleges and Universities in Santa Barbara soemone would teach a class in responsible cutlery use.
I know with a lawyer the assailant will probably get off, but's it's my hope that maybe he can spent a few nights in jail, to think about what he's done. Shame on you!

When I read the newspapers of other comparable-sized towns, they just don't have all this crap going on. It's bad here.
: 12/26/2009
But other comparable-sized towns lack the diversity that Santa Barbara enjoys

I don't know what's worse, a stabbing on xmas or the racist people commenting below.

Mexico sucks. Put away your dumb little mexican flag or move back there. There is a reason so many mexicans have moved here, and it isn't because mexico is such a great country. Try to keep this place from becoming mexico for another year or so.

If you're born here you're not "Mexican", you're "Latino" or "Latina". You're American. Can we spell a-s-s-i-m-i-l-a-t-e? So much gang crime and we're sick of it. It's hard not to draw conclusions about ethnicity in general, but it would be nice not to.
Stabbing Victim? : 12/27/2009
Funny, I find it hard to believe this guy is a "victim". The stabbing reeks of a drug deal gone bad or a drug debt not paid.

Really People? : 12/28/2009
Stereotypes are sad, but there is some truth to them, otherwise that specific type of person would be stereotyped. It is sad that a man was stabbed and had to spend Christmas at the hospital, with his family worried sick.
What makes me sadder is the amount of racist comments on this article both against white people and Latinos. Merriam-Webster defines racism as:
1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
Please understand that racism can go both ways.
First of all, this town was named by the SPANISH settlers, who were European, not Mexican. While California was under the Mexican government’s rule, it was only under it from 1810 (the independence from Spain) and 1846 (The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo). Since the roots of the city are therefore European, it is not accurate to say that Mexicans are native to California. Mexican’s aren’t just as much as the Europeans aren’t. In fact, unless you are Native American you were an immigrant, whether it is illegal or not.
Not all the Hispanic people that live in Santa Barbara are “Mexican.” Many are from other Latin American countries, therefore they are “Latinos” which is the point that I believe was trying to be made on an earlier post.
My final thought is in partial agreement with an earlier post. The United States is a melting pot of many cultures and ideas. There is not one culture that is “the American culture.” It is great to be proud of your heritage, where you came from and what your customs were. It would be nice to see more basic assimilation in the form of learning the language of the country that you currently reside in. Nothing frustrates me more than hearing stories about people who have been in their country of residence for an extended period of time and don’t try to speak the language. This goes for all countries and all nationalities, including Americans living abroad. The least you can to is try!
Come On!

European Roots? Go back further, a great part of the southern U S states belonged to Mexico!
Mexicans are native? : 12/28/2009
I wonder what the Chumash would say about that.
Chumash are Native! : 12/28/2009
The Chumash are native to this city. Then the Spainards came in and constructed the mission, giving the city its name. The only claim that Mexicans would have are the 24 years (1821-1848) in which they were no longer a Spanish colony, before the Mexican American War, in which they lost more than half of their country to the US (but less than one percent of the population of Mexico was residing in these upper states).
My point exactly : 12/28/2009
Mexicans are no more '"native" to SB than any other non-Chumash group. Mr. Mexican-American's comments above are both racist and ignorant.
Really : 12/28/2009
It's so pathetic that all of the comments on this article are based on race, and not on the fact that a human being was injured. Is it to much for people to show compassion? How is it that people always look for the worst in every situation. God bless the family of Oscar during this difficult time.

Sergio Quintana : 12/28/2009
All of the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident have not yet been brought into perspective. Our prayers for Ortega's complete recovery. We know not whether Sergio was defending his child from an attack or he himself was provoked beyond his limit? Sergio is a laid back, church going, family man. His actions were totally uncharacteristic of his personality.

Mr. Mexican American Native to this Land, You should know that if those Americans of european descent--which is the culture predominately responsible for the unprecedented constitutional government you currently enjoy, and for building this nation into a nuclear superpower-- moved back to Europe, they would find a lot of people who look like Turks or Tajiks, themselves descendants of cultures bent on destroying the types of constitutionally based freedoms Mr. Mexican-American Native to this Land racist currently enjoys. Most of the european descendants I meet long ago tossed racism as a waste of time. How strange that most of the Latinos I run into are out and out bigots hiding under the notion of themselves as a downtrodden and protected class.

I don't see the people of Mexican descent in this town, most that I see and meet, interested in becoming Americans. In general, this population HATES people that are not of Mexican or Latin American descent, and they display this hatred very clearly. They want everyone of non-Mexican or non-Latin American descent to go to hell and get the hell out of North America. I wished it wasn't so. Division based on racial lines only hurts our country and our community. It leads to violence, intolerance, hatred, and unpleasant communities. Santa Barbara is there.

The arguments go in circles and we all end up losing. Whether it is "we belong here" or "move back there" it really doesn't change the fact that the hispanic population in California is an overwhelming majority. We are all Californians if we are IN California. We are all Santa Barbarans if we live in SB. So, instead of this pissing contest of who belongs, let's face the fact that we're all here. What can we do to prevent stabbings and drugs and violence in our shared city? I believe it starts with a no tolerance policy towards gangs, a gang injunction and support for educators to call attention to children who may be living within homes where they are neglected or where there is a gang influence. Kids join gangs because they don't get enough support at home. A lot of times parents cannot even help their children with homework whether it is due to a time constraint or a language barrier. This is where the problems begin. While you're sitting back typing your racist comments, another wave of gang members is coming into this world and into our society. Combating that with hatred and bigotry is not going to win the war. It is simple minded and arrogant. Same goes to the Mexican Americans...do YOUR part to combat these stereotypes regardless of where they come from.

I do agree with the SB NATIVE Cesar is not innocent he is a punk who loves to provoked any situation he has. He always wants to look like the tough guy wich he is not. He also has many problems. Sergio on the orther hand is a good guy trying his best to do right with his family and go the right direction in life. But when you get a stupid fool he loves to provoke people sometimes it can get to someone. My prayers go to the Quintana family

Cesar is actually a homosexual : 12/31/2009
I know both of these men, and what actually happened was they were fighting over a man that they were both in love with. Surgio and Cesar had been sleeping with the same man for over a year. They found out about each other on christmas eve. I guess the love that they both had for their mutual boyfriend got the better of them.
