An apology to our readers

By JERAMY GORDON — Dec. 16, 2009

“Opinion has caused more trouble on this little earth than plagues or earthquakes” — Voltaire

The Daily Sound would like to take this time to apologize for publishing a guest opinion article on Thursday, Dec 10 written by Gina Perry titled “Watch out for ‘Obama Thumpers.’”

There’s no excuse for why the article was published. The column is indefensible and the proper measures have been taken to ensure such hatred is never published again.

We would like to apologize for breaking the trust of our readers. Even if the assassination of our president wasn’t Perry’s intended meaning — which she claims — it’s a conclusion that many highly educated people came to.

To be clear, neither Perry nor the Daily Sound offered a bounty. And the Daily Sound would never advocate for the assassination of our president or any other person.

Perry is not a staff member of the Daily Sound. She is a Santa Barbara resident who exercises an opportunity extended to every member of our community — Guest Columnist.

She is not a paid contributor, and therefore does not need to be “fired” from her “position."

Will we be more careful when it comes to printing her submissions? Without a doubt.

Some have said they will stop reading and subscribing to the Daily Sound if Perry’s column is not terminated. To this, all we can say is that we believe a healthy democracy requires that its citizens are well informed about the decisions being made on their behalf. The Daily Sound does its best with limited resources to serve this function, and also attempts to tell the stories, large and small, of the Santa Barbara community.

But newspapers, in their purest form, can also provide a space for residents to voice their opinions, concern, joy or outrage, on nearly any topic, on the editorial pages.

We need not state our political affiliations and preferences. But suffice to say, we understand how many, on both sides of the political spectrum, feel revulsion toward recent opinions expressed by Perry. But to simply stop reading the Daily Sound, or demand Perry be fired, rather than responding in kind with words and countering opinions, seems counterproductive.

While the suggestion in Perry’s column for a “bounty” on the president was highly inappropriate, we carry the old-school ideal that fighting opposing opinions with more opinions and more words is the most effective way to right a perceived wrong.

Rather than yelling about what a dimwit Perry is, and threatening to never read the Daily Sound again, we invite readers outraged over her last column, and any other, to write in. Demands from readers for equal space in the paper to rebut columns by Perry or other guest columnists, are rarely, if ever, made.

Please accept this as our apology for Perry’s column, and an invitation to participate rigorously and regularly on the Daily Sound’s opinion pages.

But to be true to the above statements, Perry’s column, on occasion, will continue to appear. Like it or not, she has an opinion, and long ago, she responded to a call for opinion pieces, liberal and conservative and everything in between, from the Daily Sound.

This is truly an unfortunate situation and we’ve learned our lesson that guest opinion pieces need to be more closely monitored.

The Daily Sound truly regrets publishing this particular column.

We would like to remind our readers that, unlike most other local media, we are open to publishing all the view points of our community. We pride ourselves on the diversification of our opinion pages and encourage everyone to submit their opinions.

New editing guidlines have been put in place to ensure quality. E-mail your guest opinion pieces to letters@thedailysound.com.

You got to be kidding? : 12/16/2009

Highly Educated??? Anyone with an education beyond the 5th grade would assume she was exspousing violence towards our president. It should also be clear to you that any threats against the President is a federal crime and should be reported. In not notifying the authorities for this, especially since you are acknowledging this is what happened, you are still not doing enough. As much as I've enjoyed this alternative to the News Press, your actions have not yet gone far enough. I would feel exactly the same if it was a republican president.

Patriot

Keep your apology : 12/16/2009

There is nothing wrong with the article. It's a good piece. I have had my car keyed because I had McCain stickers on my window. It's hard to live with the closed minded "liberals" that live in Goleta and Santa Barbara. For them, it feels like my way or the highway. I can already hear the drone of whining when Palin takes us all back to a democracy and away from socialism in 2012.
Take back America!

Good-bye, Daily Sound : 12/16/2009

"But to simply stop reading the Daily Sound ... seems counterproductive."
No, actually, it's a time-saver. The decision of whose voices to publish resides entirely with the editor. You've made your choice with Perry and her stupid, hateful columns, and not only that, you say you're sticking with her.
Good-bye.

anti obama : 12/16/2009

I have to take the side of the constitution, without it, the writer of the piece would not have been able to voice her opinion. There is no such thing in the world as a person free of prejudice...not one. Please do not chastise this woman for her brave voice. There has never been a saintly president and for all we know obama has cheated and lied and it will come out too.

Apology to our readers Article : 12/16/2009

The article by Jeramy Gordon reads like a High School by weekly. You folks presume to be a creditable alternative to news and the News Press? Time to rethink any mandate you may have presumed.

Perhaps a Bounty should be put on his head : 12/16/2009

That is what is said in the article!!! Free speech gives another loony to say her piece, and the Daily Sound has published it. I think that the FBI and Secret Service should keep an eye on both the writer and the paper.
This is really scary to have such a hateful person in our community.
She jumped from subject to subject without making any sense. How could the editor have not seen a negative reaction to an article of this nature? She is as scary, in my opinion, as the sick deranged lady who killed seven people in Goleta a few years back. She could be dangerous.
And I would ditto the remarks of the "Patriot" who wrote. An apology is not enough!!!

Disgusted

How do you spell spineless? Daily Sound : 12/16/2009

All she said is what’s good for the goose (deranged, sociopathic, liberals putting a bounty on someone’s head they disagree with) is good for the gander (meaning you idiots, how would you feel if someone said that about your precious, European socialist worshipping, tyrant appeasing, messiah). Good God and you say these indignant hypocrites were educated? What utter nonsense! You and the SB Indy can have your hate filled psychopath liberals. If you or your liberal readers don’t understand sarcasm or what it means to be facetious, well then I don’t have any use for you or those advertising in your cave to PC left wing whiners rag. You blew it.

YOU ARE FULL OF IT : 12/16/2009

PLEASE GO AHEAD AN GROVEL TO THE THOUGHT POLICE.
JUST DON'T THINK YOU DESERVE THE LIBERTIES THAT STONGER FOREBEARS FOUGHT AND DIED FOR.

how you conduct your paper : 12/16/2009

Frankly anyone who makes comments in any serious public context about putting a bounty on a sitting president who daily receives death threats from people who disagree with his politics and/or the color of his skin SHOULD NOT be allowed to publish in this paper again. You are only rewarding Perry for what goes beyond free speech to hateful speech, which is not protected by the Constitution. Rethink this, Daily Sound.

Another Patriot

What??? : 12/16/2009

No. Your "apology" is neither accepted nor sufficient.
Someone green lighted that trash. That's what editors are for...Editing.
So...you have two choices on how to deal with that person:
1. If that person didn't review it and sent it through...they should be fired.
2. If that person approved it, they should be fired.
As for your being "more careful when it comes to printing her submissions? "
Again, not good enough. And excuse me me but you can't seriously considering publishing anything from this nutcase ever again...Are you?
Unbelievable.
"Journalistic ethics"...Google that and if you can find someone there who can actually read, you may learn something.

Espousing politcal violence : 12/16/2009

So if I said that Gina Perry is a neo-fascist tea-bagger who should be dragged from her house and hung from a lamppost like Mussonlini, that would OK? After all, I'm just expressing my opinion.

cport

: 12/16/2009

Gina Perry's column espousing hatred toward homeless really shocked me. A column like that should not appear in a newspaper. It's just her blithering nasty attitude, and that has no place in a column. If the paper decided to publish her as an occasional editorial from the general public, that would be a different story. But, the paper is giving her column space, and with that comes ethical responsibility, of which she demonstrates none. Drop her. She does the paper no good, nor the readers. Makes The Daily Sound look like a bunch of amateurs with poor judgement, and we're rooting for this paper because we need it as an alternative to the S. B. News Press. We wish The Daily Sound success, but please make more mature and responsible decisions.

Upon Further Inspection : 12/16/2009

Just found this on your website:
"Gina Perry writes a political column that appears in The Daily Sound every other Thursday."
Seems like more than simply " a Santa Barbara resident who exercises an opportunity extended to every member of our community — Guest Columnist."
Further, her name is listed on the drop down list under "Opinion". She's obviously more than just a casual part time "guest" contributor.
Nice try but you need to stop making lame excuses that seek to minimize Ms Perry's relationship with your paper and do something you seem unfamiliar with....The right thing.

The Sound,not so "sound" reckless publishing...at it's worst : 12/16/2009

Oops! I did it again. What? Did you guys have a mass "Britney" ?
Crap publication. Crap antics. Mistakes that have hurt people....deeply. There is no excuse.
You have done it before. Damage. Not news. Just damage.

way over the top and down in the mud on the other side... : 12/16/2009

Thanks for the editor's apology, but printing it was more than a mistake. Please don't continue to publish her 'opinions'. This kind of tolerance of espousing violence against anyone has a long and sad history in the world. Krystallnacht comes to mind. Her piece was poorly written except for the hatefulness and espousal of violence. Readers are done with Mr. Perry's opinions, and the Sound only demeans itself by giving air and light to her hatefulness. The secret service should be speaking to her for espousing violence against our president. Unfortunately, what our country's political process most lacks now is an articulate conservative voice. I haven't ever heard that from Ms. Perry and there's no likelihood that it will appear. And, finally, has Ms. Perry apologized for her ill-considered invective?

meneush

Non-apology apology : 12/16/2009

Sorry Daily Sound, your non-apology apology isn't accepted. Advocating violence against any President is unacceptable. Continuing to publish her column is rewarding her and supporting her in her advocacy of the assassination of our President.

Disgusted in SB

This isn't an apology....it's a defense! : 12/16/2009

Revolting. I'll never read this paper again. Not because I don't happen to agree with an opinion, but because the very idea of what was written today goes BEYOND opinion and heads into an area that at least some of us still take seriously. A threat to the life of the president, regardless of whether or not you voted for him, is a federal offense. It should be reported as such and anyone with an IQ over 12 should have realized immediately that this was in violation of that law. This is NOT a liberal or conservative issue, it's an AMERICAN issue and this woman needs to be held accountable for her words, and so does this paper. Even if there's no contract between paper and writer, The Daily Sound is still responsible for what was published.

M-Cat

Perry : 12/16/2009

A Hollow Apology. The proof "Perry's column, on occasion, will continue to appear." I hope the Dailey Sound will show greater wisdom by allowing any further Perry columns to find another outlet. This is a sad day for the Dailey Sound.

R Huff

Give me a break : 12/16/2009

The piece written by Gina Perry was not a real threat against the president and you all know it. What a bunch of drama queens for making a big deal out of this.

Attention Senor Gordon: : 12/16/2009

If you think you are fooling me? your not Jeramy: As the owner/editor you had to approve Gina's writings which means you agree with her, nothing wrong with that since you are the owner. Most publications have an editorial staff that take's the blame, but since your a small publication that needs to grow you have to approve everything with or without an editorial staff since you pay for the printing bill for the DS. So now I know you really hate President Obama. (Black President?)
Anyway, Good Luck in 2010 with the growth of your publication; Just a bird's eye view Senor Gordon on your publication the DS.
1) Unable to sell full page ads on Page 2-3 8-9 15-16; unable to convince your current & new advertisers?
2) Hired "The Big Shot Ad Guy" from the SBNP & still no advertisers; umm.
3) Are most of your ads "house-ads" & "trade-outs"? For sure the restaurants? I would bet on that one:)
4) SBNP "Shake-Up" and still no support from the advertising community for the DS.
5) Reality is the SB Indy is "Our Hometown Publication" which gets all the support & all the advertising $$$$$
6) Start-up publications unless you have very deep pockets? usually keep politics & religion out of it; the publication has a better chance of survival......? & getting more ad-$$$$.
7) You are now considered "damaged-goods" on "Lucky 7:) Good luck with advertisers Jeramy; unless you start a Hard-Line Politics/Religion/publication? who knows you might get more ad $$$ than the DS?
8) I might be wrong and you start getting more ad $$$ from Gina's attention & the DS takes off?
9) Did you really have a publication up north & some rich publisher came by & bought you out?
10) Moved to SB hoping the same thing happens? Good Luck Senor Gordon:)

Pathetic... : 12/16/2009

The "apology" offered by the Daily Sound for printing Gina Perry's "opinion piece" can only be described as pathetic. Hiding behind the banner of the 1st Ammendment's free speech the Daily Sound erroneously mistakes what a well thought out column founded on accurate research; expressed in an articulate format; which can potentially benefit the community through open educated debate and dialogue...for Perry's hateful, bitter, twisted, call to violence, sack of self-righteous excrement spewed on a "guest -opinion" page. No...apology not accepted. The only printed words the Daily Sound readers need from her is an honest sincere apology...but I'm sure that won't take place since the paper seems to be apologizing for her instead. Pathetic and dangerous irresponsible journalism...

Still waiting for an apology

Excellent piece!! I agree with all the ideas, and it was very well-presented. Thanks for the apology, and I will continue to enjoy The Daily Sound.

It was protected speech under the First Amendment : 12/16/2009

A wimpy little remark like, "perhaps a bounty should be put on his head," was not a call to violent action. It's just referencing that dopey bounty used by the Velvet Underground against Tom Donohoe. Nothing ever came of that either.
Might as well use your First Amendment rights while we still have them. BTW, a lot of us feel that the country is endangered with that extremist Obama bin Lyin in office.

I look so forward to reading Gina Perry's articles in the Daily Sound. It 's nice to get other people's take on

who are upset are the guilty ones. These people are carrying around so much guilt....I fel pity for them.
Grow up or shut up.You don't deserve to read the Sound or the News Press.Move east and read some real truths. lol

perry : 12/16/2009

Free speech is fine but hate speech is unacceptable. "The most dangerous extremist in this country is the one running it. Perhaps a bounty should be put on his head." The Sound's apology is pathetic, as if to say "if we offended anyone..." Why run this carzy's column ever again, or rather, why not run any raving idiot's hatred? I expect reasoned points of view, even if I disagree I can respect thoughtful opinion, not thoughtless rants.

Best response is a better opinion writer : 12/17/2009

The Editor and Publisher stated clearly to me that alternative Guest Columnists were welcome to take up some page space instead of Gina Perry. People rightfully complaining about her crap should put out now and meet the challenge.

Can't figure out what is getting all those Democrates pants bunched up!!!!!!!!! WE are still a free nation of speech at least I thought so, you don't like it don't read it. I am for free speech and everyone has a right to it at least till O'Bummer takes it away!

Too little, too late. I won't be reading the Sound again.

sick of it

This columnist is just plain not very smart. : 12/17/2009

I cannot fathom any idea or reason why the Daily Sound publishes the columnist's nonsense. Her articles are uninformed, intellectually lazy, considers everything to be exactly black and white, offensive and just plain nonsense. I have made the contention that The Sound does this merely to provide fodder for indignation and conversation among its readers. This columnist is just plan not very smart. I wish they would stop providing her a platform to scream her ignorant vitriol.

opinion sadness : 12/17/2009

I would like to point out that the Daily Sound does offer some alternatives to polarizing politics. There is Randy Alcorn who I believe is usually right on target and Allan Feld who reminds us there is more to life than petty ego-driven political opinions.Personally I feel if we didn't place so much importance on words the world would be a better place. Of course I recognize that I am writing this in words.

gary k.

A dose of their own medicine? : 12/17/2009

I agree that Perry's column was tasteless. How curious, though, that those who spewed hatred for Bush are SO offended and vocal when "their" President is demonized. Remember the vitriolic, crude, aggressive bumper stickers so prevalent around town? "Why Does Al Quaida [sic] Kill Civilized People When They Could Kill Bush?" I didn't hear a peep or see a keyed car when those appeared.

Perry : 12/17/2009

A publication has to demostrate to opinion writers where the line in the sand is drawn. I and many others do not feel it is appropriate the action the Sound has taken. Perry should not be given access to expressing her opinion any longer. I recognize you are trying to keep an open mind but there is a point where being civil and descent and respectable are to be taken into account. The article is a disgrace to your publication and to America and the Sound should not allow Perry to ever contribute again. There are many right wing individuals that can do a much better job of intelligently and respectfully expressing their views.

Perry had courage to write that essay : 12/17/2009

I agreed with Perry, actually. I too have been yelled at by Obots zealously defending 'The One' against quite reasonable questions about his experience, policies, and direction. I too have been called a racist, dried up piece of feminine anatomy, and all sorts of horrible things by liberal, tolerant people. They mean to squelch other voices by shouting them down. How is that liberal and tolerant? Kudos to Perry for having the courage to write something that doesn't read like the latest does of kool-aid. And people, get over yourselves. The Daily Sound is a small local newspaper. It's not like a Washington notable like Charles Krauthammer wrote it. This is unlikely to be seen by anyone other than Santa Barbarans, who have responded with a 'hang the witch' fervor that evokes Islamic fundamentalists defending an attack on Mohammed. If Obama were really that wonderful, he could withstand a little criticism, and his followers could stand it too, knowing that he will prevail. But since they're running witch hunts on any naysayers, I guess they know deep down that he's not actually going to save the world after all.

a thinking person

Gina Perry : 12/17/2009

Good response from the Sound! Well done.
However, since Perry is simply another citizen, writing an opinion without compensation, why isn't she published in the letters section, rather than affording her the false gravitas of a "column"? A column is normally associated with a paid, syndicated professional, and though Perry's opinions are similar to those of some professionals, she remains a private citizen with an ax to grind. Like the rest of us, she should be the opportunity to be read for what she is, not be given the status of a professional.

don't know what this is...

You can't have it both ways : 12/17/2009

Its either a free speech issue and it was just "opinion" and its business as usual with more of Ms. Perry's hatred to come.
Or
Its as you say: "unfortunate", "indefensible hatred" that is "breaking trust" with your readers.
Which is it Mr. Gordon???

Hate Speech Is Not Free Speech

Free Speech : 12/17/2009

For those complaining that Perry is owed her free speech, and indicating that somehow the public outcry about this article is hindering it, you clearly misunderstand the concept. Free speech is a two way street. Yes, Ms. Perry can write anything that is covered as free speech by the law, but people also have the right to respond to it in kind. If you have followed Ms. Perry over time, you will see that she often faces harsh critiques (full disclosure: many of them have been mine) of her articles. This is not a hindrance of free speech, but rather a gleaming example of it. This isn't the "left" trying to silence the "right," this is the public overwhelmingly saying they feel Ms. Perry's article stepped over the line. You might not like it, but it isn't a hindrance on any of our basic rights.
In regards to the article itself, I didn't notice that last line when I read it through the first time. I was more annoyed that Ms. Perry had (somehow?) brought the GVJH controversy into the mix, and mischaracterized the situation completely, stating "under the guise of leadership training, a community organization named Just Communities taught a liberal sex ed class to eighth graders." After hearing the outcry and re-reading the article, I did see the line in question. Do I think that the Sound or Ms. Perry honestly believes there should be a bounty on the president's head? No. Do I think it crossed a line? Probably. I don't think she needs to be "fired", and I won't stop reading the Daily Sound, but I do think the Sound could be more careful in the future with what they print. They seem to agree.
Also, to be fair, this isn't the first article that the Sound has pulled of Ms. Perry's. It's just the first time they felt compelled to acknowledge it.

Daily Sound columnists : 12/17/2009

I was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Daily Sound. However, this is the final straw. While I agree that a variety of opinions should be reflected in a paper's op ed section, surely the publisher could find a more professional, original and articulate conservative columnist than Ms. Perry. Her columns are consistently inane at their worst, unoriginal at their best. I would be embarassed to be represented by her if I shared her political viewpoints.

APOLOGY : 12/17/2009

IT IS GREAT THAT THE SOUND GIVES A CHANCE TO GINA PERRY, A WIFE AND MOTHER A CHANCE TO EXPRESS A WORLD VIEW TO OUR COMMUNITY.I CAN UNDERSTAND WHEN THERE ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO HEAR HER OPINIONS TO LOOK FOR ANY WAY TO CRITICISE WITHOUT FORGIVENESS."BOUNTY" IS NOT A SYNONYM FOR "ASSASSINATION" BUT THE IDEA OF OBAMA PUTTING A BOUNTY ON THE PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TIED MORE CLEARLY FOR THE POINT OF THE ARTICLE.HOWEVER IT DIDN'T OFFEND THE EDITOR AT THE TIME.

Good bye and good riddance : 12/17/2009

You are free to publish what you choose and Gina Perry is free to say and write what she wants.
I, however, am free to choose what to read - and what not to read. Based on your disgraceful decision to continue publishing the execrable, hateful drivel of Perry, I choose not to read her nor your publication any longer.
Good bye.

opinions are like a**holes -- everyone's got 'em : 12/17/2009

"To this, all we can say is that we believe a healthy democracy requires that its citizens are well informed about the decisions being made on their behalf."
What the hell does that have to do with Gina Perry? Indeed, if you believe that, then you should correct the many misstatements of fact that Perry makes in all her columns.
You blather on about "opinion", but it is accurate information, not opinion, that people need in order to be productively involved citizens; enabling people like Gina Perry to spread lies goes in the wrong direction.

Whatever : 12/17/2009

The apology is kind of half assed. The lunatic ravings of right wing trolls are kind of creepy too. I've heard stupid conspiracy theories from the left, but the right wing always win hands down when it comes to the really fringe/crazed ones. Someone get these people some help, they're sick.

John

Perry's free speech rights are irrelevant here : 12/17/2009

Gina Perry has the right to free speech -- she can publish her own paper, or stand on the street corner and blather to her heart's content. But she does not have any right to have her words published in the Daily Sound -- that right is reserved to the owner of the Daily Sound. And thus the owner of the Daily Sound should exercise good judgment if he wants "highly educated people" to read his paper.

Nice Apology : 12/17/2009

Dear Jeramy,
I think it shows Intregrity to admit to a mistake and ask for an apology.
I think it shows courage to apoligize publicly.
Mostly I think, by admitting that you will continue to publish Perry's opinion, you are committed to the objective principal of free speech. I applaud you as an American hero, and way un-common dude!

Not just read in little Santa Barbara : 12/17/2009

People connected to Santa Barbara live all over the world , so this column was not just viewed in Santa Barbara. Her views are nauseating and certainly not well presented. Insanely presented, in fact.
And that Neil Baker is behind her 100%. What does that say for Perry?

The Daily Sound is not a newspaper its a free rag : 12/17/2009

The Daily Sound is not a newspaper its a free giveaway rag. Its not journalism, as this case so well exposes - So don't fret it. Just ignore it. Dont read it and certainly do not buy anything from the advertisers if you disagree with their publication. They cannot and will not survive if people do not patronize the advertisers.
Gina has made her bed. She'll be sleeping in her own feces for years to come. Not because of what she said but because of the way she said it. Respect for differences of opinion starts with respect for the community and for what your role in it is. She showed us all that she not only has no taste she does not have the intellectual capacity to understand that there are proper ways to voice ones disgust and difference of opinion.

Where's Gina? : 12/17/2009

I noticed Perry hasn't responded to any of this. What's the matter Gina, 'fraid someone will put a bounty on your head?

If Perry keeps vomiting her bile.... : 12/17/2009

If the Daily Sound wants to keep publishing hate columns, fine. Each week they publish her "writing", I say we write every single business that advertises with them and tell them we won't be patronizing their business that week. Gina has every right to say what she wants, the Daily Sound has every right to publish who they want, and we have every right to respond. God bless America.

Another missed opportunity : 12/17/2009

I was initially delighted to see the Sound appear, especially after McCaw destroyed the News-Press. I and many others thought it was a great chance to see a viable alternative to her sociopathic rag. But it never happened, did it? All we really got was an amateurish effort that never rose above the level of a half-decent college paper. You cheaped out on talent, opting to go with newbie reporters in stead of reaching out to the many experienced N-P journalists who would have loved to help. You got what you paid for.
And now this, which clearly shows you really have no idea what you're doing. If you're really as horrified as you imply, you simply dump her from your roster of columnists. This isn't a First Amendment issue, it's one about competence and demanding some standards from your contributors. She advocated criminal activity against the president of the United States. If that isn't reason enough to dump somebody, I don't know what is. Keeping her merely condones her behavior. It also demonstrates the Sound's commitment to mediocrity.

Apology for Perry's column. : 12/17/2009

Thanks for the apology. I thinks it's rare that publications provide both an apology and a desire to take steps to avoid a recurrence of the act. They sometimes retract errors of fact but not judgement. You are to be commended.

THIS got published?? : 12/17/2009

Just read the article in question in the comments section, having missed it the first time around. I am quite surprised at the inaccuracies in this article/op ed piece. GVJH actually was not "promoting" homosexuality, for example (and to quote Ms. Perry, "I still haven’t figured out what’s wrong with that"...). Free speech or not, shouldn't we expect our opinion columnists to base opinions in a published piece on facts? Makes me doubt the credibility of any of the Sound's reporting since the editors apparently don't vet their columns before publication. I'll take my Sound with salt from now on.

What ever happened to journalism ethics?

A healthy exchange is a good thing when it comes to free speech. I voted for Obama, never liked Bush, but I would also never call for a bounty on his head. That is a threat folks. Plain and simple. I would assume Gina Perry would be ok if everyone started calling for a bounty on her. You aren't hard to find you lunatic. You definitely crossed the line.

Gina Perry can't be fired from the Daily Sound : 12/17/2009

Date: 2009-12-16, 10:05PM
Apparently Gina Perry is a volunteer at the Daily Sound so she can't be fired. But Perry and the Sound could be questioned by the Secret Service. Threats and statements that could result in violence against protectees of the Secret Service are investigated some 1500 times a year. So if you care to make a complaint, skip the useless Daily Sound's owner and refer your complaint directly to the Secret Service.*** http://www.ustreas.gov/usss/faq.shtml#faq4 *** It is the Secret Service responsibility to evaluate your complaint and then investigate if appropriate.

Keep Gina Out of Daily Sound

Where's the REAL apology? : 12/17/2009

Considering the number of Presidents and presidential candidates shot or shot and murdered in this country in my lifetime, you’d think we live in a third world dictatorship. Perry was wrong to take her BS as far as she did and the Daily Sound editor was incredibly stupid to let it be published. The lack of oversight in the production of the paper is as serious a breech of professional journalism as can be. And Mr. Gordon’s apology is lame. A simple “we’re sorry this one slipped through the cracks and I promise to be ever so diligent and professional so something like that piece of drivel will never again appear in our publication.” That would work. The defensive and lame apology doesn’t cut it.

I missed this controversial article because I read the first paragraph and decided to skip it, it was just blither from Perry and I didn't want to waste my time.

Hey Nerds! : 12/17/2009

First of all - remember that Loretta chick who wrote about Mexicans with 6 kids? Gina is just the younger, just as dumb version. By the way she has like 3 friends on Facebook - no one wants to be friends with her. Speaking of... hey Neil - newsflash! YOU ARE BORING! I can imagine how excited your family gets around the holidays knowing they will have to sit through a whole dinner with you blabbing away about yourself... do them a favor - hand out pamphlets with your comments to the DS. Then they can read along for entertainment - you are so interesting! God its awful reading your rambling- which makes me think- was this your DS tryout? Loretta and Gina would at least end an article- if you get that down- you'll be money. Daily Sound gives you the freedom to speak or simply can't afford a monitor...

First Amendment Wrongs : 12/18/2009

Those who claim that the First Amendment and the principles of open debate apply in this case should first re-read the amendment itself--it begins "Congress shall make no law," not "all newspapers must continue printing the words of those who advocate political violence, even when doing so constitutes a felony." The First Amendment doesn't protect all speech, all the time, in every context, nor does it prevent the editors from telling Ms. Perry to exercise her right to free speech in some other publication rather than this one. As for the issue of open debate, when a writer uses a newspaper column to encourage an assassination, as Ms. Perry clear has done in this instance, she is no longer participating in any kind of debate--she is making a threat and stifling it instead. Time to send her and her hate on their way--and time for The Daily Sound to print a masthead editorial telling us exactly where it stands on the issue of political violence and its place in public discourse. A single sentence buried in this half-apology isn't enough.

Liberalism=menally deranged : 12/18/2009

And yet the infantile mock rage of the left continues. Barring the stupid side bar from this Neil Baker whack job, we witness the unbelievable hypocrisy of left wing hate spewers.
I keep reading Gina’s article over and over and all she said is what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, in other words my lefty loony morons, if your going to preach the vile hatred and violence you had no problem with during 8 years of Bush then you ought to consider that others can do the same. Ooooooooh, that’s outrageous! That’s slanderous, that’s illegal!
Cry me a river you phony, plastic crybabies. You’re just mad because the great socialist messiah has found himself governing a right of center country and can’t get all his European socialist crap rammed through the legislature fast enough to sooth the 20% of the voting population that wants it. You actually hate the man for doing his job and so like little wounded children that you are, your just plain mad. Someone points out the unmitigated hypocrisy you nut jobs exude and that’s it, scream bloody murder! You go after Gina thinking she is expressing the rage you feel for Obama missing entirely the fact she was just pointing out your own vile hatred. Idiots! Then the Daily Sound caves to the PC monkeys and falls all over itself in more mock outrage. Imbecile! Gina, for God’s sake woman, if anyone should be outraged it’s you! After all you got every leftwing kook in this town misinterpreting your article in the same moronic group think orgy that they display over Al Gore’s global warming religion, complete with calls for censorship. Good grief, what an incredible display of what a mental disorder liberalism really is.

the decline of reason : 12/18/2009

One by one, our newspapers are losing all credibility and fading away. Sb news press has zero credibilty. Now the paper calling itself the alternative to the sbnp has fallen into its own morass. Someone writing for the daily sound suggests putting a bounty on the president. Advertisers should bail on this trashy rag of a paper in droves. I don't care who the president is or what their politics might be, Ms. Perry crossed the line. The paper should not have let it see the light of day nor should Ms. Perry be welcomed back.
Controversy can sometimes be good for a paper. In this instance, I think it is just sad. The daily sound had a lot of potential, but now I'm ready to write it off as an amateurish rag. I am disappointed and expected much more.

Is it or isn't it? : 12/18/2009

Free speech is a wonderful and frustrating thing. We all love it when it is "OUR" free speech, but hate it when it is "THEIR" free speech. But was it a "crime" to suggest a bounty be put on Obama's head? I don't know. But perhaps those of you saying it is hunky dory to say such a thing might ask Ms. Gina Tomlinson Perry if she would feel it was "crossing the line" if a newspaper "guest" columnist suggested a bounty be put on the heads of her four children, Brian (28), Theresa (26), James (11), and Bryce (9). Or ponder how you would feel if it was YOUR head being threatened with a bounty.

Done with Daily Sound : 12/18/2009

An apology to our readers : 12/18/2009

While I do appreciate that the DS attempts to fill a real void in our community--lack of a true daily news outlet (the INDY is fine but only a weekly), there is/was no excuse for this and the apology is indeed rather lame. Emphasizing that Perry is simply a "Santa Barbara resident who exercises an opportunity extended to every member of our community" is disingenuous at best. If you indeed continue to print her "opinions," I too will no longer bother with the DS. Just drop her, whatever her status or affiliation may be, and be clear that you are doing so and why.

Idiocy : 12/18/2009

You guys are nuts. A bounty on someone's head isn't a euphimism, or an idiom, or an expression. It has a specific meaning for a specific purpose. You are letting the author off the hook if you allow her play it off like she didn't mean it. Extremism of her sort should be smacked down, and yet, your paper was complicit with it.

Bye, Bye Soundie.

Wait a minute : 12/18/2009

First of all, this Gordon fellow, who I assume is the editor or publisher of this rag, starts his sanctimonious little sermon with a quote from Voltaire, the context of which is a clear argument for "opinion." He then waffles on the clear intent of the offending column, and piously explains that the newspaper did not in fact offer a "bounty" on the president. Yet he assures his readers that the offender's column will "continue to appear," though with closer scrutiny.
Sanctimony, piety, disingenuousness and cheap hucksterism seldom appear all together in a single editor's column. Take a bow, Gordon. You've truly disgraced yourself.

Perry : 12/18/2009

These comments are out of control. The paper made a mistake printing Perry's trash, but they did something most people never do when they make mistakes -- they apologized. I could hardly believe it when I saw it. It was a sincere, heartfelt apology. I'm sure if the editor had a time machine he'd go back and fix everything, but you all need to get over it and move on. I understand the anger, but enough is enough. You all want Perry Crucified, you're just as bad as she is. Someone says something you don't like and you call for her head. Nice. Hypocrisy at its best. AND TO THE GUY WHO KEEPS POSTING GINA COLUMN: Knock it off. Why do you insist on spreading her hate around. You're just adding fuel to the fire. I can not guarantee that I'll never read the Sound again. I can't even guarantee that I'll never read Gina Perry again -- if they continue to print her. Your threats are empty. You're all here, on the sound's web site, commenting that you're ex-readers. When does that "ex" become official? Let's get real, you all are still reading the paper.

Guest Column? : 12/18/2009

As a longtime journalist, I was proud of you while reading your apology letter. Until I searched her name and found this at the end of her last online column: "Gina Perry writes a political column that appears in The Daily Sound every other Thursday."
You heavily implied that no action was being taken because she was unpaid and just a random reader whose horrendous material had sort of accidentally fallen onto your pages. So I searched your site for one of her prior columns, and gosh, I found this: Gina Perry writes a political column that appears in The Daily Sound every other Thursday.
Um, hello? That is a whole different deal, people. If that person had a real job, she would have been fired at any decent paper. What a bunch of weiners.

Surely, there are some opinions you won't publish? : 12/18/2009

Some Nazi calling for the extermination of a race? A communist saying blow up the offices of major corporations? Someone opposed to the war advocating the destruction of troop trains?
I doubt your newspaper would publish any of those.
A columnist who called for the assassination of the President of the US is hardly any different. She does not deserve another chance. What she wrote is not informed opinion that adds to the edification of your audience. It is hate speech, and the person who wrote it does not not be allowed to take up space in your newspaper.

Dennis

This columnist IS your employee : 12/18/2009

Although Perry is not an employee in the legal sense she is no doubt an employee. You pay her with something valuable—your newspaper space and on line presence—in exchange for her writing. To continue her employment behind the façade of promoting free speech moves you from the role of publisher to that of provocateur.

Carl Edwards

Overreact much? : 12/18/2009

The only apology the Daily Sound owes is an apology for taking down this opinion piece. An apology for bowing to the pressure of all the nut job liberals in this town that get offended too easily. Any rational person reading this column understands what Gina meant in her last sentence especially if you actually take the time to read the entire article.

uno

Perry : 12/18/2009

Your long-winded apology stopped short of the fullest measure of repudiation: a commitment never to publish this writer again. Nor did you provide a compelling explanation for the sequence of editorial decisions that led to her threat against the president from being published in the first place. Perhaps what your paper needs is a new publisher.

Gina Perry : 12/18/2009

What is the differnece between the rage in Ms. Perry's column directed at our President and the ugliness of the responses? Nothing!

Sick of ugly

Sick of "Sick of Ugly" : 12/18/2009

Don't you know this a place to drink and yell? Your point was just as ugly... "Silence please" is not polite just cause you say "please". When someone like Gina or Neil starts squawkin'- we need to get to chicken hawkin'. It's called standing up to the zombies... Neil thinks he's the first guy to use the word "Zionist" to stir up attention. That trick is like 4000 years old!

Still cooler and happier than you :)

Dear Sick of Ugly : 12/18/2009

You mistake rage for a call for violence. Wild raging disagreement with the policies of any politician is fine. Perry stepped over the line by calling for the president's life. She specifically called for a "bounty on his head" not a "bounty for his arrest."
That's the difference between what she wrote and what the folks who disagree with her are saying. I'm amazed you can't see that.

Dennis

Dear AN50 : 12/18/2009

You're making a false equivalency: The Velvet Revolution folks didn't call for a bounty on the CofC's guy's head. They call for a bounty for information leading to his arrest. See here: http://www.velvetrevolution.us/stop_chamber/images/COC_Wanted_Poster_8.jpg
To use your analogy about sauce for the goose: I'd say Perry took the Velvet Revolution's "sauce" and heated it up to about 900 degrees F before trying to fling it back.

Dennis

Dear "a thinking person" : 12/18/2009

The uproar is not about the fact that she criticized the president. It's about the fact that she used language that sounds like a call for violent action against him. Geez, can't you see the difference?
Do you think the Daily Sound is apologizing because the paper didn't like the fact that she criticized the president? They apologized because she crossed a line. Either you're intentionally avoiding that fact, or you need a course in reading comprehension.

Dennis

: 12/18/2009

Bob : 12/18/2009

I am so tired, and I mean SICK and TIRED of hearing mental midgets talk about death threats against people who have"political disagreements". Let me tell you about "political disagreements", political disagreements lead to SLAVERY, WAR and TYRANNY.
When two people disagree on whether there should be a penny a pound tax on sugar, that is a protected "political disagreement". When a TYRANT puppet who works, posing as a legitimate president, to ENSLAVE the American people, you are so far beyond "political disagreement" that all bets are off. When a criminal cartel uses science fiction to try and scare the world into accepting One World Government by unelected, unaccountable bodies, that is TYRANNY.
Wake up America, we have been invaded and conquered. Obama is a puppet working the global financial syndicate of banking criminals. Obama is a tyrant. I will NOT be your slave! Do you "progressive Marxists" understand?

What Kind Of Lame Nitwit Apology Is This!?! : 12/18/2009

...I mean, honestly, how hard is it for an editorial staff that presumably is not comprised entirely of H-1B visa holders to understand right up front that the suggestion of a bounty being placed on the head of the President of the United States is nothing more than an act of sedition that does not rise to the level of being accorded any right of being heard in our national discourse...

In the previous world of George W. Bush, in which you were apparently quite happy, an equivalent comment about the president would have had the FBI swarming all over your office.
You only published your apologia when the storm blew back in your face.
Now you add to your shameful behavior by telling us Gina Perry - named on every issue of your paper as a regular contibutor, and married to one of your regular advertisers - is a "...resident exercising an opportunity" as a '"Guest Columnist."

Apology Accepted : 12/21/2009

First of all, the paper has apologized for the oversight that allowed Gina's poorly constructed comments to be published. There is no excuse for making the statements she did and no excuse for allowing these comments to be printed. But a mistake happened and the publisher has accepted responsibility. I applaud the publisher's effort and will continue to believe and tell others that the Daily Sound is a great alternative to the News Press. Before you dump the paper, please consider all the positive articles published by the Daily Sound. Is there anyone among you who have issued such harsh criticism of the paper who has not at some time in your life spoken out of line, used inappropriate language to express your opinion, missed an obvious error in your own writing or misstated something? Jeramy Gordon has also issued a challenge to all of you out there who have expressed strong opinions regarding this issue—step up and submit your opinions. I think the apology was well constructed and the decision to continue publishing Gina's views (even though I absolutely do not agree with them) is in keeping with the long standing American tradition allowing FREEDOM OF SPEACH. She has the freedom to express her opinions as long as they do not advocate violence (as her piece on Obama clearly does) and WE have the freedom to choose NOT to read her column. I do not read her column and I still enjoy the Daily Sound for it's other content. The ANSWER is NOT to quit reading the paper but rather to quite reading Gina's column—simple isn't it? To the commenter who claims to KNOW what the publisher thinks or believes because Gina's idiotic statement slipped past the editorial review—what crystal ball are you using anyway? That's like stating that someone who accidently rolls through a stop sign has an utter disregard for law and order. It's an absurd conclusion which, in itself, discredits it's author. That being said, I am very concerned about comments appearing in this thread from Neil Baker. I knew one of the victims of the murderous rampage perpetrated by Jennifer San Marco and anyone who compares their feelings and situation with hers is clearly showing themselves to have a poor understanding of the distinction between right and wrong. It seems clear to me that Neil Baker has mental problems and may very well be a deranged time bomb waiting to go off. I hope the SBPD and FBI are aware of his statements and activities. Here are some facts regarding Jennifer San Marco: Jennifer San Marco (December 6, 1961 – January 30, 2006) (aged 44) was a former US Postal Service employee and mass murderer who killed seven people in a possibly racist spree killing. According to colleagues, she had a history of making racially charged statements, and once attempted to start a publication entitled The Racist Press. Her first victim, Beverly Graham, was a friend and former coworker of mine. She was a beautiful spirit with a gentle soul an would still be with us today if it were not for the actions of an angry and deranged mass killer. People who admire and/or advocate the behavior of someone like Jennifer Sa Marco should be monitored very carefully for the protection of the rest of society.

1st Amendment is not absolute : 12/22/2009

The 1st Amendment demands responsible speech and does not allow people to print false statements or issue threats, especially against the President of the United States. The pattern of conservatives in the past year has been to either print or post something false, racist or threatening about the President, apologize and then blame the media for taking the comment out of context. It would be one thing if these comments were made in the heat of the moment, like town hall, but these statements are often coming from elected officials and top GOP officials. My favorite is the mayor from the town near Memphis who claimed that the President intentionally scheduled his speech on Afghanistan on the same night as the Charlie Brown special as part of his anti-Christian agenda. When he started getting heat for that take, he blamed the media for making a big deal out of his statement. Don't you love free speech and the 1st Amendment.

Have you ever even read the damn thing? It does not demand any such thing nor disallow any such thing -- if it did, you would have broken the law by writing that.
The 1st Amendment isn't relevant here, since it only applies to the *government* -- it limits the government's ability to curtail speech.
Frankly, it's no wonder that this country is in the shape its in when so many of its citizens are so intellectually lazy. Opinions they have in abundance, but knowledge is sadly lacking.

Now that wasn’t to mean, vile, angry or intellectually dishonest for you was it, maybe a tad intellectually narcissistic, but then that trait makes it real easy to spot it in others. Merry Christmas and cheers to all!!

I weap for our future : 12/26/2009

I am completely flabbergasted. Your defense of Perry's column and the fact that it was ever published at all has mortally wounded this paper's integrity. Sure people are entitled to their own opinions, but printing a column that suggests considering a call for the assassination of our president is indefensible. I will no longer be reading your papers.

Well considering its illegal... : 12/26/2009

Well considering its illegal to threaten the president, yes the column is indefensible. Like most conservatives though, she won't be getting a visit from the Secret Service, unlike during the Bush Regime when he was sending them out to investigate everything from old men in coffee shops to teenagers with t-shirts deemed offensive by a rightwing teacher.
Pathetic

Disgusting : 12/26/2009

Patriotism is defending the principals of the founding documents. I support free speech and the revolting Ms. Perry's right to voice or publish her opinions. And good for the Sound for giving her a place to do that.
Capitalism and free-market is about supporting or denying resources to ideas you value. As I find Ms. Perry, her ilk and the organ who employs her -- ie, the Sound -- completely and utterly disgusting, please know that your apology -- weak and mealy as it is -- is worthless. And that goes for advertisers of yours as well, who should be ashamed. Violence to a president OF ANY PARTY is beyond the pale. We do not support coup d'etats here. We elect people. I am sickened by the Sound.

'measures have been taken to ensure such hatred is never published again."
So you're gonna kill all the Gopigs?

No to stop reading is a response in kind : 12/27/2009

No to stop reading is a response in kind.
There can be no debate.
Free speech also secures me the right to not debate. If you are not willing to take the neccessary steps well then you lose readership and become the rightwing extremist view that you print.
Never again.

Come on people... : 12/28/2009

Come on people! I have no idea why anyone actually wastes their time reading more than three sentences of the guy who writes the previous posts. That is all it should take to discern his ramblings as sociopathic gibberish. Don't you realize that this is his only means of self importance. As a previous poster said, just scroll past and ignore this person. Do not respond to him as this is what he wants. It is obvious that this person is highly deranged and probably in need of psychiatric help.

The Righteous and the Wicked : 12/29/2009

This is a Goleta/SB area newspaper, and, you're all surprised at Gina Perry's opinions? Both sides of this story consist of insanely righteous people. This is apparent when reading all the comments. See...this is the only mental effort that seems to come from the financially well-off Santa Barbaraians. The combined time to discuss this issue at such a length could have gone into creating a new info/news site, or it could have been used to organize a "Feed the Poor" type event. Everyone here is related to Gina Perry in one way or another... You're all talk.
