Good, bad, and ugly

By GINA PERRY — Nov. 5, 2009

For conservatives in Santa Barbara, the results of Tuesday’s local election exposed some good, some bad and some downright ugly.

In the mayoral race -

The good: the conservative agenda won.

(As of 3:00pm, November 4, Dale Francisco and Steve Cushman, combined, had received 11,246 votes; Helene Schneider, 10,254 votes; Isaac Garrett, 481 votes; and Bob Hansen, 412 votes.)

A conservative win in Santa Barbara is a big deal. It’s been a long time since conservatives voted in the majority in Santa Barbara - a fact our liberal media will most likely choose to ignore. A fact, I hope, is not lost on our mayor-elect Ms. Schneider.

Conservatives in Santa Barbara should no longer feel alone.

The bad: the conservative candidates lost.

Perhaps Mr. Cushman should have acted on his own request to Mr. Francisco – get out of the race for the good of the city. It is unlikely Mr. Cushman’s votes would have moved to Ms. Schneider. Had Mr. Cushman acted outside of his rather large ego when he realized he was trailing Mr. Francisco, we would most likely have a conservative mayor-elect today.

The ugly: lack of coordination and cooperation on the part of conservatives is to blame.

Although Helene Schneider can claim victory in the mayoral race, she cannot claim a majority of Santa Barbarans supported her platform. By a ten percent margin, more voters chose the conservative platform – fiscal responsibility coupled with stricter law enforcement to combat gang crime and homelessness – than the liberal platform – more government spending to solve problems that haven’t yet been solved by more government spending.

We can only hope Ms. Schneider recognizes her good fortune is a result of uncoordinated efforts by conservatives rather than her own ideological leanings.

In the city council race -

The good: Voters elected common sense speaking, if not conservative leaning, candidates Michael Self and Frank Hotchkiss. Bendy White campaigned on fiscal responsibility and voters responded with overwhelming approval.

The bad: Justin Tevis didn’t attract a broad base of voters but he did light up the rooms in which he spoke. The conservative movement in Santa Barbara needs young, smart, and energetic people like Mr. Tevis. Let’s hope he sticks around.

The ugly: Extreme negative campaigning didn’t do anyone any good. Slinging mud at a stranger is one thing, slinging mud at a neighbor is another.

Conservatives must now capitalize on what is clearly a shift to the right in Santa Barbara. It’s been a long time coming.

Tuesday’s election results made my day.

SCARY GINA PERRY : 11/5/2009

It's a matter of perspective . The baseless trash thrown in the Wolfswinkle funded slander campaign undoubtedly convinced some low information voters to support the " conservative movement " . Now lets see the innovation Self & Hotchkiss apply to solving our gang problem since that was a main tenet of their platform .

Dumb! : 11/5/2009

This is one of the most ridiculous columns Gina has written to date. A serious majority of City Council votes went to progressive candidates. Hotchkiss and Self finished third and fourth - positions 1 and 2, 4 and 5 were progressives. It is spelled m-a-t-h. Steve Cushman is a Democrat. He is a Democrat who does not believe we have a serious homeless problem and does believe that buisness is great in SB. He would have endorsed Helene if he did not run. Assuming that 100% - or even 50% of Cushman voters would have gone to Dale is absurd. Republican rule: When the majority fail to support you, just pretend that they do and lie about it.

Dumbfounded

Math Challenged! : 11/5/2009

Cushman is pro-business, not a Francisco-style conservative, so the conservative agenda lost - big time. Get over it, Gina!

Gina Perry is as Crazy as Sarah Palin : 11/5/2009

Lets hope that these crazier than Sarah Palin regressive "conservatives" recognize that they should be thankful to be in a liberal community that they are so critical of and have been elected to the council of one of our nation's best run cities. Let's hope that these regressives also recognize that Santa Barbara budget problems and social problems are the result of failed national agenda of the Bush-Cheney policies.

For God's sake get over Bush/Cheney : 11/5/2009

Don EpiDermis must get a boner thinking about Bush at night.

: 11/5/2009

waaa waaa "failed national agenda of the Bush-Cheney policies" Umm it's been a year Dermie. I don't see things improving. Is it still going Bushes fault for the next three years? What are you going to do with yourself after you're done hating Bush for a hobby? What a loser. Get a job.

Slinging Mud : 11/5/2009

Here's the conservative value system--slinging mud at strangers is OK, just don't do it to people you know? Gina, here's a lesson in ethics, slinging mud is not good no matter at whom you are slinging it. Unfortunately the awful materials generated on behalf of the 'conservative' slate in this election were among the nastiest on memory. So much for family values.

Who is Francisco? : 11/5/2009

Dale Francisco is a liberal who tries to dress conservative. He has flipped flop on so many issues it's scary. He was first elected by all the NIMBY's. Yet, he never learned that sound planning and promoting business in our City is what pay's the bills. He's support of Measure B is indicative that he has no sense of planning or promoting affordable housing downtown. I did not vote for Helene, but she is a far better choice than Francisco. At least Helene is open and has learned the ropes during her time on Council. I hope she learns to lean more to the center than her accoustome socialist mentality.

Save Downtown

The Conservative Majority : 11/5/2009

I would like to know how many of the 11,000 voters you mentioned were actually moderate. For some reason you left that out of your "consevative" daily beat down.... The media... is like an oil painting. Close up it looks like nothing on earth. Stand back and you get the drift! Bernard Ingram, public relations expert.

clear message to the City Council : 11/5/2009

Cut spending fix the gang problem

taxpayer

The real question : 11/5/2009

How can Helene be mayor of the city from the kitchen? Her husband allows her to run around?

you're not in kansas anymore : 11/5/2009

Oh no, you better run and hide Gina! You've aroused a hornets nest of angry, white, liberal, males...they just dig Helene...she is the Bette Midler of Santa Barbara.

the wizard

cant we all get along : 11/5/2009

conservative, democrat who gives a crap what you are, we just need some young blood on the city council that will make some changes, House will not cut it, haven't you people learned. Tevis had some fire, its to bad we didnt get him in there.

Sore Winners : 11/5/2009

Congratulations to all the winners, including Helene Schneider, Grant House and Bendy White. I may not agree with their ideologies at all but I realize how much sacrifice was required of them and how much effort goes into a successful campaign. Most of the angry bashing going on here is from people who should be happy the top vote getters for mayor and for council are both unapologetic progressives. I have become aware of the strangest phenomenon since the election of President Obama. It seems like people who support the far left agenda are simply insatiable when it comes to power and have an unbelievable amount of anger and vitriol. I call these folks "Sore Winners" and it is almost funny. I say "almost"...

The ugly : 11/8/2009

Gina forgot to list herself under the "ugly" category.....Gina is constantly slinging mud at her neighbors (remember, we are all neighbors in Santa Barbara).

fed up with Gina

HAHAHA : 11/10/2009

In your face Justin Tevis. Grant House, Harwood "Bendy" White, Frank Hotchkiss, Michael K. Self, Diane Channing, David Pritchett, Cathie McCammon, John Thyne III all finished ahead of you. You barely beat out Cruzito you pathetic loser! Leave Santa Barbara and move back to Nevada, because you suck, and you will never be a part of our city council.

Progressive Thinker

send Gina Perry to jail : 12/16/2009

Ms Perry is wrong on the facts, extreme in her views, a hypocrite, and quite possibly has committed a federal felony in her latest column that the Daily Sound apparently deleted, where she threatened the President of the United States.

Perry comment appalling : 12/16/2009

I am shocked and stunned that an opinion writer in a supposedly responsible newspaper should suggest, as Perry evidently did, that our current President should be eliminated. No matter what your political spectrum, that is beyond the pale of decency and even patriotism. Mr. Obama is OUR president, regardless of what we think about his politics. OUR: an inclusive first person pronoun which includes Ms. Perry, like it or not. Our.
How can a _responsible_ paper keep posting diatribes like this!? It's as bad as Armstrong of the News-Mess, or worse. Daily Sound, you have some explaining to do about allowing this to continue. It's just plain chicken to post it and then remove it from your site when people complain. You either is or you aint (behind her). And if you ain't. . . remove _her_

Opinion : 12/17/2009

Murshid:
Opinion is the outcome of mind. It is an outburst of its reasoning and judging faculty. And so, according to the evolution of a particular mind, its opinion is. Opinions clash when two people of different stages of evolution express themselves. Therefore the wise are more reluctant to express their opinion, whereas for the unwise it is easy. A simpleton is only too glad to express his opinion uninvited.
I put Mrs. Perry firmly in the simpleton categorie.
