Despite Santa Barbara’s reputation as the birthplace of the environmental movement, some local residents may struggle from time to time with the complexities of recycling.
The Citizens Planning Association hopes to address those issues by breaking down exactly what is recyclable during a free community workshop titled “The Insider’s Guide to Recycling.”
“This workshop is a real opportunity for people who want to become better at recycling and want to learn not only the basics, but also some unexpected tips and resources to help them do so,” Naomi Kovacs, CPA’s executive director, said in a news release.
Topics that will be addressed include how to determine what should be recycled, whether or not to rinse out dirty containers before recycling them, and how to handle construction and hazardous waste, among other issues.
Organizers will also offer tips on some recycling opportunities that might not be widely known, such as offers to recycle old Christmas trees, printer cartridges, old cell phones and other electronics for free.
“Recycling has come a long way since the sort-it-yourself days,” Celeste Carlisle, the city of Santa Barbara’s environmental services outreach coordinator, said in the news release. “Not only do we want people to know what to recycle, but we also want them to know that recycling is indeed effective and worthwhile.”
Attendees will receive resource packets with reference materials and tips for effective recycling. The event takes place on Tuesday, July 28, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at the Faulkner Gallery, 40 E. Anapamu St.
